Finished the first capture of reel 1.

That was relatively fast!

There are three reels, and I only finished the FIRST capture of reel 1.

I still have to do additional captures of reel 1, then repeat the process for reels 2 and 3. Then after I have the raw material, the hard work begins.

Plus it looks like I'm getting a 2nd print to work with.

This is going to take a while.

Puggo, could you post an example of this at some point? i'm curious to see how that wear looks as is :)

I wonder  how it would look to encode it to a max-4400 MB 264/aac mp4, if that would help any considering the noise?

Ahh... gotcha. Well best of luck doing the other captures.

I just realized that this statement I made is utter nonsense.  Such a situation would cause reddening on one side, not at the tops of the frame.  Now I'm curious how the tops of the frames on the crawl could be more orange.

Will post screen caps soon.

Just finished two scans of reel 2.  Harder to get a good white balance because most of the reel takes place on Dagobah.

I was wondering how that would be possible...but then I got distracted.

This is really awesome!  Can't wait to see it!  I am curious about using a video camera to do the captures.  Can you try using a flat bed scanner on some of the frames and do a side by side comparison?  I am curious how they will compare in terms of quality, and I always wondered about using a scanner to do something like this, but I don't have a 16 mm film to try it with.  I know it would take forever especially when you have to crop and line up each frame, but in theory it could be done.  I would just scan 48 frames at a time into one picture and then crop them into 48 individual numbered frames (fits on my A4 scanner), then insert them into a movie.  It would take 3600 scans for 120 minutes of film.  Also to do it quicker, only the frames that aren't available in HD already would be needed to get the OT back.  Anyway, sorry for the side track and I can't wait to see the final product!

Those frames look EPIC! They're so vibrant and colorful. It has that nice warm film-feel to it, just like the Puggo Grande.

The Emperor hologram seems slightly different somehow, or all the fine scanlines lost with the old video transfers?

Yeah I wondered about that.  Those aren't interlace artifacts, because when I tried telling Vegas to remove them for the still, they were still there.

By the way, these are caps of reels 1 and 2.  Am doing a first capture of reel 3 now.  I still have at least one more capture of reel 2 to do as well.

Didn't someone point out the hologram differences visible in your ESB Super 8 transfer? I can't find the thread it was mentioned in...

Puggo never fails to impress. Thanks for sharing this with us! It almost looks as if this would be completely watchable if only released RAW, I can't wait to see what kind of clean-up you have in mind if it already looks this fantastic.

There's not much cleanup to do.  Very slight color correction, scene-by-scene tweaking of brightness/balance, some isolated repairs, resizing, and building an appropriate border.  Then the audio..., etc.

Just finished first scan of reel 3.  It's looking good!

Oh yes, I forgot that those shots were raw. Can't wait to see how fantastic they'll be post-clean up. Anyway, I was under the impression that some 16mm ESB were sourced from the 70mm version. Puggo, have you checked if this has any of the documented 70mm differences?

Back in the Puggo Edition thread (5th page, I think), some frames were posted by Starkiller showing two visual differences: the Emperor's hologram not fading in, and the satellite dish being absent when Luke is hanging from the bottom of the cloud city building.  A couple of posts later there are some audio differences as well. I'll check out the visuals tomorrow.
