I will, but that's way down the road.  This one is going to take a lot longer than the 8mm edition.  First off, it's about 3 times as long.  Second, I'm going to want to make the video look as good as I can -- I won't have the excuse that's it's cruddy Ken-film super8.  Yeah, I could SAY it's cruddy 16mm... but frankly, the film looks pretty good.

Sounds great, I'm sure we'd all rather wait a little longer for a more polished product.

Puggo - If you give give me the "misslycat" sentence i could try to explain it since in am Swedish.

And "Tugg" refering to Chewie is when the comicbook came out here in Sweden way back for some reason the translators had translated his name . Chewbacca - Chew=Tugga (To Chew a gum). Bacca=bak (i have no clue here) and so Chewie=Tugg i guess, not the brightest translators but me and my other Star Wars fan mates have had a great deal of fun about this, actually i made a reference about his name yesterday when i think of it!

I think the French dub translated it as "chew tobacco"

Sorry, it's English audio with Swedish subtitles.  Interestingly, Chewbacca's name appears to be "Tugg".  Hmm, now might be a good time to ask the question that the subtitles left me with --- what's a "misslycat"?

Misslycat or misslyckat means 'failed'.

Tugg means 'Chew', so that kinda makes sense. :)

'Grrrran-day'... preferably with a rolled 'rrrrr'. :)  That's Italian for 'big'.

Ahh i see "misslycat" is misspelled, should be "misslyckat" and as Satanika says "misslyckat" means "failed".

Heard back from Belbucus regarding the mono soundtrack:

While it might yield a useful reference, 16mm soundtracks have a fairly limited frequency response – around 150 to 5000 Hz with a dynamic range of about 40 dB.  A 35mm Academy mono optical track is more like 45 to 8000 Hz with a dynamic range of around 48 dB.

From wikipedia, the linear track on a VHS tape has a frequency response of 100 to 10000Hz, so was probably a better source for the audio - certainly in terms of high-frequency content.

It was indeed; sped up, and a bit worn.  (ITV, 1985?)

I've placed a 3-minute sample audio clip containing a variety of segments from the raw 16mm mono mix capture, on the PuggoGrande website.  Simply go to the puggo website, select Puggo Grande, then scroll down to "selected AUDIO clips".  It's uncompressed .wav (19Mb), so you'll want to download it and listen to it on a decent system.  I tried to put together a variety of sounds.

You will probably notice a hum during the Beru segment, but it's not present in the other quiet sections, so I think it's intentional background sound of the moisture vaporators.  Other than that, the various pros/cons should be self-explanatory.

I haven't done any filtering, post-processing, etc.  This is the raw capture off the film, warts and all.

Thanks for posting those great audio samples. The more I listened to them, the more I like the idea of having a warts and all audio option on the final product. I'm getting more and more excited about this project. Let us know if you need any sort of assistance...

Wow, that's sounding good.  It feels like I'm WATCHING it in the theater!  Not to mention it's consistent in quality.

edit: wow, I'm hypocritical.  xD there I was complaining about kiss-asses and now I am doing the same.  Edited to seem less like that.

Okay, not a theater - jesus, what was I on?  It feels more like it belongs with the movie.  I guess that's what I meant.  And actually, I hear the popcorn popping ;)

Thanks everyone for the encouraging comments.  Indeed, optical noise sounds different than tape noise.  What I expect to do is pretty much what I did with this, a lot of nothing.  There are a few (surprisingly few) thumps that I'll remove or reduce by hand, and a couple of very short gaps that I'll need to patch.  But given the feedback, I'll otherwise leave it alone.

Thanks for the tip.  I've been planning to start asking about this very thing, so you've given me my first suggestion and I will most certainly be checking it out!

I started capturing the first reel last night.  It's a bit more difficult than I thought it would be. For some reason, capturing the anamorphic film just seems more touchy.  I had to transfer several times before I got it framed reasonably well. I'm beginning to wonder if anamorphic uses slightly more of the frame than normal 16mm films (this is my first anamorphic film capture).

And, although the color spread is not bad, getting a decent white balance is proving to be a challenge because the film has slightly faded in various ways depending on the brightness and hue of the scene. Also, the film is noisier and grainier than I had hoped.  As you can see, it isn't going to challenge the GOUT, but I'm still forging ahead:
