It’s bizarre, how much humanity is unquestionably restored just by maintaining the look of the original photography.

With the '04 master there was this visual suffocation of digital ‘cleanup’ forced onto a picture that very apparently didn’t have it to begin with, crossed with the dreary, crushing dark purple smeared over the whole damn film. It comes of as this sterile, smothered, sort of science experiment in motion.

With this, I can see a set. And actors, and people, and props, and…things. It’s almost like a real movie that actual living beings put love and care into. Simply put, it’s refreshing to see.

Rather deep and philosophical there…

It doesn’t hurt to offer help, but it always hurts to disregard those that do.

Here’s an update of the color grading to more accurately represent the blue panels of R2-D2, which were too purple in the previous iteration:

OMFG. I think those are literally the most gorgeous Star Wars screen shots I’ve ever seen. It looks like a different film.

Wow, you’re really killing it with this latest round of correction. The green edges are effectively reduced to a non-issue in that last image and everything looks vivid yet natural.

All’s I can say is, the very best of luck! What I’ve seen so far is beyond stellar, glorious in its most purest form, and it’ll look superb on my screen… even though I don’t have any 4K screens in my house. But a 1080p version will be just as spiffing!

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

I am beyond pleased about the prospect of a de-noised version. This is going to be one hell of a wait.

From what I’ve seen of the behind the scenes stuff, photos of the R2 props, and from the R2 builders club, R2 is supposed to be the slightly purple blue that you have just removed. Everything I’ve found says that the panels had a more purple tint in the original movie than they did in the later movies.

This looks very promising. The sample is too pink, but the shots Dr Dre provided look great and I look forward to a version of this material with good color grading.

However, while there’s no question that working on this in 4k is great, I don’t think there’s much benefit to releasing it in 4K with that amount of DNR. It’s not particular bad DNR for 1080p. However, there’s not a ton of inherent detail in release prints; adding an extra step of information loss starts to kill any benefit that a 4K release might provide.

Well Williarob did say in the 1st post that there’s going to be a version with DNR as well as a version without DNR so that both camps can be satisfied.

Mike V, who probably knows more about the original R2-D2 also has the purple tint in his model, so purple it is.

Thanks for the heads up!

Mike also mentioned that the paint was applied directly to the aluminum model, creating a highly variable ‘anodized’ look. So in certain light, R2’s panels could appear almost black, whereas other lighting would have sections of the metal appear vibrantly blue. In any case, it’s a good bet that the color is somewhat on the reddish side of blue under even lighting.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

With this resolution you can really see how beat-up and dirty R2 looks, love it.

I’ve noticed that in the slightly overcast shots filmed in Tunesia the blue panels are more electric blue than cobalt blue like they look the rest of the time.

Wow, these images look incredible! It’s amazing how much of a difference just the colour correction on it’s own makes…
I can’t wait to see more shots!
