Wow, I was already very impressed with the theatrical showing in Vancouver earlier this month (presumably from the same source that’s been projected there three years in a row). The only obvious flaw I can remember was the short glitch in the Diahann Carroll performance.

That glitch has been painstakingly patched over, and it’s really hard to spot where.

Awesome! Will check it out when I get back from the in laws. Are you able to say what the source of this specific version is?

From off a master copy, as noted by the lack of commercials and lack of voice-over on the credits.

SKot, will you be presenting the newly-remastered SWHS at the Kiggins Theatre in Vancouver next week?

If your crop is water, what, exactly, would you dust your crops with?

What is the version of the special that starts with some of the local news anchors before they go to the special. The one that I guess was a HUGE upgrade that was taken directly from a master videotape. Someone authored a GREAT dvd of this version with menus etc. Is THAT the best quality one? Any help would be tremendous.

I believe you are conflating two versions: The one with the news anchors at the beginning was someone’s fairly clean, first-generation VHS tape from the broadcast on WHIO in Chicago. I believe that one was significant in that it was the first widely-seen version that had the entire, uncut intro to the Special intact, and it was significantly better than other bootlegs that had circulated before. That one has been distributed as a DVD with great menus, etc.

The one from the broadcast master tape was shared by EditDroid and is significant for being far and away the best-looking, clearest version. Being a broadcast master, there were no commercials or station identifiers. For picture and sound quality, this is the best.

Thank you very much for such a well crafted reply Joel! Awesome, at least I know I was not imagining this. Now, has anyone put together a nicely menued fan dvd combining those for the whole experience. WOCin their airing order? If so, which one does that? Thanks again for helping.

Now that we have such a good first generation copy, is it even possible that a better condition version could be made? Was this videotaped origionally, or was it filmed and then transfered?

I decided to add a signature

It was on tape so it is as good as it gets.

It was taped originally, with some filmed elements (the Star Wars footage and cartoon?) used.

Seeing as at least one of the edits out there included the blu-ray footage of the cartoon, has any one considered editing the footage of the ships in the Holiday Special?

I personally think it’d be too jarring. But if that’s something you’d like to see, go right ahead! There’s other footage as well: Vader walking down the corridors for example.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I haven’t seen that edit.

Although I’m not sure I need to.

Personally, the SWHS is a product of its time. We could do quite a few things to/with it, including editing in Blu-ray footage of the ships, but I wonder how satisfying it would be.

What I’d love to see is Jambe Davdar doing a documentary feature a la Star Wars Begins / Building Empire / Returning to Jedi. But that probably isn’t high on his list of priorities.

Regarding the footage: It might be an interesting concept to someone so I thought I’d put the idea out there. Granted, there would be the issue of formatting the footage to match the rest of the special but with all of you experts here, I figure that would be easy stuff.

I was looking at one of the scripts to see if subtitles could be added to the Wookiee language scenes but I didn’t see anything in the way of actual lines listed.

A documentary on the SWHS would be an interesting thing to watch at this point.

Happy Life Day to us all.

A friend of mine told me on Facebook that he is still cursing me for giving him a copy.

I don’t know which one I gave him, but he declined my kind offer of the EditDroid edition.

If the SWHS is the worst thing he’s ever seen, he’s doesn’t appreciate how lucky he is. 😉
