However, as I said, let's go to Ravenna and actually see for ourselves. The more I think about this, the more I want to go.

Unfortunately, also if Ravenna is less than 200km from my home, I couldn't be there... May the Force be with you!

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

Thanks buddy. Here's hoping my folks don't shoot me when I tell them where I want to go and why. I ought to be studying.

The CBS fox tape might have been only English but I'll verify that. It's so hard to find these info because Italian Wikipedia just translates what was written in English without considering Italian releases etc.

Those in Ravenna have a good 16mm version of the film which predates the tape so there is a very good chance that what they have is the theatrical version which, I bet, has the subtitles. We could just ask the owners if it contains subs on Greedo but if it does we would have to go to Ravenna to see for ourselves how these appeared. Asking doesn't cost anything, they might even record that segment for us with a mobile phone perhaps, although I still have to see an Italian collector that wasn't overly protective of his things and very little collaborative... But we may hope! Saves us a trip to Ravenna which doesn't seem to be near any of us, but least of all Leo

Apparently they have 35mm copies and they charge 25 € for the whole event, which includes the 3 movies, a typical romagnolo dinner and a game of Dr. Why.

So, little update. I cannot go the screening. But thxita will be there, so at least one of us is going.

In the meanwhile, here's the end credits, the only thing missing is the still title card at the end with the dubbing credits. [Click for a bigger version]

I'm confused... aren't you trying to match that big PNG of the credits you've posted? The HD credits look completely different... in color, font, size... what happened there? The first part of the credits looks okay, until the credits start to roll. Then suddenly the font is white and not blue anymore, then at 1:10 a different font is used.

The color thing is an error, I'll correct it next time I render it. The font change is intentional, I overlayed text layers in photoshop over that PNG, and I saw that plain old News Gothic seemed to fit better than News Gothic BT. Looks good to me. Maybe I'll post the photoshop file to illustrate what I mean.

Here's the comparison

Well, I'd still say the font stays the same throughout the credits, only the size changes. (Anything else would be typographically unacceptable ;) )

Here's where I realized I needed to change the font slightly:

Top one is the one I used, News Gothic, bottom one is the font for the first part of the credits, News Gothic BT.

Would you suggest I change the first part and just use News Gothic for everything? Only in the first section I'd use it bolded.

So tempted to post the lol bunny pic...

Is your source the videotape?

Did you find a matching font for the Greedo scene I sent you? Once I send you the other video of Greedo tomorrow you may post a screen grab here, perhaps our friends here can help us identifying it at once.

Yes, it's the 1991 vhs.

Regarding the Greedo font, for everybody else that won't know what we're talking about: yesterday's screening of "Star Wars" revealed a different font for the Greedo subtitles in the italian version of the movie. Not only that, but the original translation is yet another one I hadn't yet encountered. I'll post a screengrab right away. I think it's some sort of Frutiger.

By the way, Leo you would go crazy if I told you that the cinema version had also a rather different sound mix that I had never heard before...

 Nice !

Maybe it's here the font that is been used in all the european translation.

I've been meaning to ask: was it mono or stereo?

Oh, I see. But in that case I really would only substitute single letters (in this case the Q) to better match the original (but still use them in bold!). The problem is, back then those credits were done by hand, and the fonts did look different than today's digital equivalents.

You might want to try changing font spacing and vertical scale to better match your VHS, but you should really never use different fonts (and in this case have them stay bold as well).

On the subtitles, that's a fantastic find! I'm glad thxita made it to the screening. I would really assume that all international Greedo subs had that font. I think I'll have to change the German subtitles after all!

I believe it was mono but I'll ask to be sure.

About the subtitles, I have no idea if other European releases had the same font. Is that how it worked back then? If you believe that is the case feel free to link these posts to other threads where European versions are being discussed.

I'm uploading my videos and soon we'll have better images to work on.

At least the crawls and title cards seem to be made pretty much identically in terms of fonts, coloring, etc. (apart from some curiosities). So it might be true for the subs as well.

I can't find any matching font either. I suppose they used lots of custom characters.

Author

It looks like "Gill Sans". Not exactly but it is near.

Author

Looking good... I'd say the differences can be fixed manually.

Makes it difficult for other languages though, as we don't have a template for those.

I'm currently scouring font sites in order to find the perfect match. I had previously considered Gill Sans, but it's not close enough for me.
