Preserving DTS LaserDisc tracks, specifically Jurassic Park — Page 10

Has anyone checked out the mystery DTS 5.1 soundtrack yet on the 3D version?

Which mix is it? DTS theatrical? ...The previous DVD 5.1 mix? A downmix of the new 7.1 track? Or...?

I'm curious too, but I'm more excited to see how well our DTS preservation syncs, if at all.

I saved the original .wav files from ElDonate if we ever need to adjust.  I'll be checking myself this week.  Anyone else gonna try to sync?

Just got the disc at work. I have a BD ROM with me and just ripped it to a MKV. There is definitely a regular DTS 5.1 soundtrack. I will check to see what it calls that track when I get home to where my PS3 is:

I do have borisanddoris' DTS track from myspleen with me and will try to sync it. Problem from the start is that the 3D JP transfer has the new Universal logo so at minimum there is an offset needed.

I'm hoping there might be an easy way to cut that logo off and splice on the old one without a whole re-encode.  Attaching one .mkv to another perhaps?

Is this for people who want the new transfer? are the issues worth it? can we not re encode the HDTV of the old bluray to match the colour of the new one minus the DNR?

I wonder if they ported over and remixed the old DTS DVD audio.  It was only half bandwidth as well.

^^^if that's the case, that could bode well for syncing since I'd venture that track is pretty close to what work we've already done.  Finger crossed!

It is strange that they would all of a sudden include the original mix, but then encode it at a low bit rate.  I'd imagine it's the very same file from the DTS DVD.  (SPECULATION).

I'm capturing right now the third side of the DTS laserdisc; I wonder if its soundtrack is the same of the theatrical DTS CDs or not...

I read somewhere (IIRC widescreenreview) that the AC3 LD soundtrack was a mere conversion from the DTS LD... anyone could confirm that?

The DNR on the new disc is really terrible. I tired my best to match up the frames with the ones TServo posted:

3D Blu-ray (2013 Master)

2D Blu-ray (2011 Blu-ray)

Basically the old Blu-ray, is just too old of a master and the new one is DNR'd to death.

Not that I've seen it, but are all these comparisons between the two not taking into account the "perceived" detail in the 2011 sample because it is overly edge enhanced?  Of course the 2013 3D isn't going to look right: not only is it designed for 3D viewing, with glasses, in motion, but the 2011 disc is so wrong that anything looks dull by comparison.

Again, all speculation.

It is possible that it was derived from the theater DTS audio but it might be mixed a little different due to home and theater venues having different auditory needs when it comes to presentation.

OK, still at work and haven't listened to the DTS 5.1 on the 3D disc to compare it to the Cinema DTS discs but here is a comparison of the surround left channel of the Cinema DTS (top) and the new 3D disc (bottom). I figure; if there were any changes they would be more obvious on the surround channels. I took both DTS tracks and converted them to 6 Wavs using Eac3to.  Even accounting for changes in sound level, they are different.

Close up detail from the "we got Dodgson here" scene:

Even with the small size of this pic, you can see detail missing from the bike, the wood grain on the pole and the surf. Pretty much all the grain has been removed. That is not to say the original is great. It is still a terrible master and like boris said full of EE but I think better then the 3D in detail. Color is a different conversation.

One more before I hit the road. Cinema DTS top once again, 3D DTS 5.1 bottom, front left channel:

Oh Universal, you just can't do anything right can you?

True enough.  I thought Jaws was downright awesome.  E.T. was stunning.  I don't know if the 7.1 mix is accurate to the original Dolby 6 track mix, as I was too young, but it sounded wonderful.  I had the original version on DVD way back when, and always remember the 5.1 track on that being terrific as well.

As for Jaws, I disliked the re-mix so I stuck with mono, which was excellent.

Jaws had some, well done tho it was DNR

The 3D Blu-ray comes with a 2D disc.  Does anyone know what was used for that disc?  Is it the same master as the 3D version or the same disc from 2011/2012?

Confirmed: the 5.1 and 2.0 mix are derived from the new mix. Big change that gives it away to me every time: listen to the dialogue between Hammond and Genarro in the jeep before seeing the Brachiosaurus. Seems to me maybe they tried to appease fans but obviously they just half assed it as usual. Waiting for my remux to finish and check sync of the correct mix.

As for the image, yeah, it's DNRd for sure. Some shots are worse than others. It's tolerable but still a shame.  Damn Universal, you suck. A big Dino turd.

The quest continues for a perfect home version.

Someone should just get ahold of a print and scan it, we can combine efforts for any necessary cleanup.

I know people with prints...not sure they'd part with it though.  I can ask!  That, or send instructions on how to scan! ;)
