Info Wanted: Prequels Original Version?

Hi, I’m new here…

I’m a huge Phantom Menace fan, and I was just curious if anyone had a DVD version of the OTV. I know the American DVD was edited, and the VHS is fullscreen… I’d really love to get my hands on an OTV WS DVD.
And also, does anyone know if the original Darth Maul death scene is on some release? I vividly remember him getting chopped in half in the theaters, but the DVD he doesn’t become two pieces until halfway down the chute. I may be wrong, as I was only 8 when I saw it in theaters… I just recall it being more graphic.

I also became kinda interested in the old trilogy, with all your projects to restore it. What’s the best one out there that’s close to the OTV but anamorphic widescreen? Do any have hard subtitles? I know there are a bunch floating around… what do you suggest?

I *think* the OTV is on a Japanese laserdisc? Has anyone ripped it?

I might consider, if no one else has, though I lose the 6.1 track :(

I have the widescreen VHS of the OTV. It's gathering dust in the basement, so it may have degraded somewhat with improper storing, but at the same time I doubt it's a good source to work from anyway.

And there's a set on Demonoid that's the new 2006 "GOUT" set converted to anamorphic, but "Emprie" has yet to be uploaded, and I don't think the subs are hard-encoded. It'll be the best-looking release of the original theatrical versions of SW, ESB and ROTJ you can find until the X0 project is finished (which will be quite a while from the look of it). If you PM me I can provide you with links to the torrents.

Is this an American VHS? I was not aware of a widescreen VHS anywhere.

Making something anamorphic is easy - DVD Rebuilder can do it. Was there any color correction or denoising? If all that was done is making it anamorphic, then I could have done it myself, as I have the GOUT set...

Do you have a DVD recorder by chance? I'd really love to get my hands on a rip of the Japanese laserdisc, and finding someone with it is hard enough :P
If you have one, would you be willing to record it for me? (If you use 1-hour mode you could do one side per disc and it would be excellent quality)

They have the Phantom Menace Japan Laserdisc on ebay. It's not that rare as you see them pop up all the time. There's one here:

There was a Special Edition widescreen VHS in 1999/2000 (whenever the VHS'es were released) that came in a big box with a sample of the Art of Episode I book and a 35mm film strip of four frames or so, along with the VHS tape of the widescreen theatrical version of Episode I.

--edit--

And yes, it was an American, US NTSC VHS release.

Super, have you been here:

It is interesting and informative. And delicious if printed on fruit roll-ups.

The Episode I laserdisc has been ripped. It wasn't bitstream copied audio-wise, so it doesn't have the awesome soundmix per se... but Rikter and... another person (can't remember who atm) teamed up and released this.

Does the laserdisc have the original Darth Maul death scene?

Or am I unable to remember what I saw in theaters since I was so young?

No, i'm afraid you are wrong. There were 2 versions of that scene. One where he doesn't split in half and the other is the same as the DVD version.

Where is the one where he doesn't split in half?

I mean, he gets a lightsaber through the stomach... it would only make sense that he'd split in half right then and there, I thought it was edited kinda like episode 3 where the DVD shows Anakin fighting grown-up Jedi instead of the children... for moral reasons.

(Does any release of episode 3 have that version, BTW? However, That's one edit I do like, since I almost cried seeing Anakin kill the children and I just hate watching that scene...)

What DVD of Ep3 have you seen? you have never seen him kill the children in any release. You only see him find the hiding children and the scene cuts when his saber ignites. There have been no other versions of EP3
The non splitting Maul was only seen in an early EP1 theatrical release, but not in all releases

I thought I remembered seeing him light the saber in the room with the kids then hearing screams, but I may misremember.

Anyway, does there still exist a cam or whatever of TPM, to validate whether the first wave of videos was tweaked? </paranoia>

There is a cam somewhere out there. I used to have it, but I naively tossed it when the official DVD was released (I mean why would I want a crappy cam when I can have a high quality DVD).

At least I think I tossed it. It might turn up eventually.

For the record, (OT) drf and I know each other from IRC and are working on some preservation projects jointly. (He's the unnamed friend I mentioned in the Disney thread.)

I saw it in theaters. In theaters you could clearly see him fighting Jedi children, and it was changed on all home video releases. I know a guy who has a Chinese telesynch if you want proof... LOL (but I'd have to track him down, I haven't talked to him in years)

I guess I forgot to mention where - It's where Yoda says "if into the archives you go, only pain will you find" (or whatever he says) and Obi-Wan watches the replay video of what happened at the Jedi temple. In the DVD, he's fighting adults, but in theaters he was fighting the kids.

The reason I remember this is a real-life friend of mine is also a big Star Wars fan, and after seeing it together I told him how upset I was that they showed Anakin fighting the kids. He bought the DVD before I did, and said "You'd be pleased to know that Lucas changed that scene on DVD"... otherwise I probably wouldn't even remember any other version.

People misremember... like the two grappling hook tosses in ANH...

A telesynch will tell us everything.

You are definitely remembering it wrong. That scene hasn't changed from its theatrical release. He never fought the children. Just ask zion who did a version, along with me, of ROTS that was taken from a TC. I also saw this in theaters at its midnight showing and several times after .This scene never existed and i do know what i'm talking about. Find the Chinese guy who has the same TC and you will see.

As Molly pointed out some people, still to this day, swear they saw Luke throw the grappling hook twice. Memory is a funny thing

OK, so if Darth Maul's death scene wasn't modified on DVD, and Anakin never was shown killing Jedi children... what exactly WAS changed?

Is there a list or something that says what was modified for the DVD? They aren't "special editions" like the 2004 OT set, so it's obviously not much... The two scenes I thought WERE modified apparently AREN'T...

I was just about to post the link to that site. Basically, in Episode I, we got a longer podrace sequence (subsequently losing a shot of Watto that is still available in the deleted scenes), an extra eye-candy scene on Coruscant (subsequently losing a shot of Palpatine's apartment building which is NOT available on the DVD at all), and some background extras replaced with more exotic looking female Twi'leks (I'm Johnboy, and I approve this edit).

In Episode II, a few background speeders were removed from the chase sequence (I guess so we wouldn't forget to focus on the characters; you know, because the audience is essentially a dumb animal with the attention span of... hey, I found a nickel!) and Anakin's breakdown in the garage is extended (MORE HAYDEN! YAY!).

In Episode III, one of the wipes is changed to a normal cut and... that's it. No, I'm serious, that's all they changed. Why they even bothered is beyond me.
