Prequel Trilogy Deleted Scenes - AI Upscale (a WIP)

Hey guys! I just started playing around with using AI upscaling software on the deleted scenes from the prequel DVDs. The results I’ve gotten so far are pretty hit or miss, but I figured I’d share anyway. Here are some of the better shots I’ve been able to render so far:

What do you guys think?

Looking really crisp and clear! Keep it up!

If you did this for all of the deleted scenes throughout the saga, a lot of editors will praise your efforts since a lot of people want to add scenes (especially in the sequels) but they are just too poor SFX wise.

OT of course.

Not to bad, missing just a little bit of sharpness for my tastes but that will of course introduce new artifacts which need to be cleaned up by hand.

For seventeen years the renegade Pfhor scoutship jumped between the closely packed stars of the galactic core. And all over the ship, dancing through the wreckage of the Pfhor computer core, Durandal was laughing…

I would love that too! Not sure how doable that is at the moment, but I’m sure once the technology is more refined we could get closer to that.

Yeah unfortunately the AI in its current stage is not great with textures, so a lot of things in the frame end up getting smoothed over. I think it has worked best for some of the episode 2 deleted scenes, as those were pretty soft to begin with. But it is much more noticeable in episode 3’s deleted scenes. I think it works really well with wide shots, so I’m experimenting with combining different shots with each one having different settings–as opposed to one setting for the whole scene–to get the best overall picture. In the end, I don’t expect to be able to bring these scenes up to the same quality as the rest of the movie, but my goal is just to make the transition into these scenes a little less jarring for a better viewing experience.

These look amazing compared to every fanedit I’ve watched of the prequels. AOTC really needs the deleted scenes to make the perfect fanedit of the film, but the scenes are so low quality, that they can suck you out out of the film when viewing. Would love to see how far this could be taken.

I’ve always felt like these deleted scenes were so vital to the story and pacing of these movies. I’ve been getting better results the more I play around with it. Here are some before and after shots of ROTS:

These look fantastic!

Those screenshots look amazing! Technology keeps bringing us closer to that magic “Zoom and Enhance” button that’s in every episode of Law and Order.

My preferred Skywalker Saga experience:
I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX

This looks incredible!! Once this is done I can’t wait to see this when its in motion!

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

please do this with the OT scenes.
fantastic work.

Do you think you’ll update your edits when this is complete?

This is fantastic! Wow! KEEP IT UP! These would LITERALLY perfect some PT edits.

These look amazing! I’ve been wanting an Extended Edition for the PT for so long and now it’s actually possible!

Use the Force, Joh Yowza.

I will for sure … should be simple enough to do on iMovie.

Well, unless I want to introduce a generational loss across the entire trilogy by ripping the finished edits themselves, at this point it’d probably be easiest to manually trace and rebuild the entire trilogy by overlaying them by a guideline proxy video track ripped from the existing finished edits.

It’s just not worth it, not without the truckloads of free time I once had. Those FCP7 project files are houses burning down caught in suspended animation.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I believe you and believe me that I have NO to ZERO skill and knowledge on actual high end/good/etc. programs. With my pathetic-ness, I’d probably just have these “HD” video clips be on top (no sound) and essentially make sure they synch up with the audio from your edits. That’s basically what I am personally do with what I got. 😉

That’s my only gripe about using those deleted scenes, which SHOULD have been in the movie, but because they were not at HD it sticks out like a sore thumb to me. They do improve the movies very much, but always stick out to me. So with this project, this was my wish from a long time ago … being able to do a proper upscale for these scenes to really make these edits perfect. (For Star War prequel movies despite their issues … but I do enjoy watching them via Hal’s edits.)

I am very much watching this thread since this has been an answer to my wish for true upscaled deleted scenes. Oh boy.

Why would that introduce loss? It’s digital.
