RULES:

  1. Select a film that is generally not highly regarded.
  2. Say something positive about it. Anything.
  3. No backhanded compliments. For example "Highlander 3 sucks less than Highlander 2" or "I liked Mac and Me despite it sucking" will result in excommunication from the thread.
  4.  Starship Troopers rules.

  5. Responses to compliments can only be more compliments.

  6. PENNANCE can be granted by delivering excess praise and heaping love onto an unloved film.

Rocky 4.

Apollo Creed's big musical number entrance for his fight with Ivan Drago is very interesting to watch. While it's this enormous spectacle, director Stallone chooses to shoot it as a series of small moments, including some great silent little character moments, rather than just film it like a huge musical number.

^doesn't that break the first rule?

The Legacy (1979)

The best performance of Sam Elliott's bare bottom in a major motion picture.

I like the whole Rocky franchise in spite of the recycled plots.  I think they continue to show a development in his character and I find that worthwhile.  Besides, I never get tired of two stinky, sweaty men beating each other to a pulp.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The whole graveyard scene is awesome.

Hey, TheBoost hasn't told us if we can do that yet, and if we can, you've got it coming for what you said about Starship Troopers!

The Lost in Space Movie

My introduction to the Lost in Space Franchise (Well, one of its computer games was, anyway).  Below are the two things I love most about it.

The Robot:

And Bruce Broughton's Score:

If there were two Lost in Space-related things you should know about me, it's that I LOVE the Rebuilt Robot and Bruce Broughton's Score.

The franchises I get nerdy about are so obscure that not even most nerds know about them.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (you knew it was coming sooner or later)

Say what you will about the flaws in this movie (and there are many), but it's hard to find fault with Liam Neeson. He always gives his all in whatever film he's in, and his characterization of Qui-Gon Jinn is no exception. His Qui-Gon is the Jedi we all want to see: quiet, dignified, wise in many ways, yet not afraid to "mix it up" when he has to (and he has the skills to back it up).

Agreed.  Plus, the score is very memorable for me.  I'm not as obsessed with it as I am with the Lost in Space score, but it's still an awesome score.

Hey, which Batman movie is your least favorite?  Just kidding!

Actually, I will say that I don't like Batman Forever because of Carey and Jones as idiotic villains, but I did enjoy the exploration of Bruce Wayne's trauma.

Qui-Gon was lifeless and boring, which I guess made him seem dignified when put on the screen next to the silly antics of Jar Jar and Anakin.

Obi-wan as played by Alec Guiness - that was dignified.

Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything. I should have known better than to post even a single positive opinion about any aspect of the prequels.

I enjoyed the two Aliens vs. Predator films, purely because of the Aliens vs. Predator aspect. I like when a crossover like that can include pretty sweet battles.

Hmm... okay, I can do this...

Um, TRP, your opinion of Starship Troopers, while generally terrible, is wrong... dumb... motivating.

There are a few positive aspects of the PT that I can think of (and there are whole threads dedicated to that) but I would agree with TPR that Liam Neeson isn't one of them.  You said it that it's hard to find fault with Neeson and I don't find it hard at all.  There does seem to be a fair amount of Qui-Gon love on these boards, but I can safely say I don't understand it in the least.

And this is coming from a chap who, while not having any posters or tattoos of the man, consider him to generally be a highlight of the pictures he's in.  I can't say I go out of my way to see all of his movies, but I generally consider him to be a plus.

Just not in TPM.  For the same reasons as TPR already listed.  I find him terribly dull and flat.  And wholly unconvincing.

EDIT: Something positive about MJPollard's post...  Well, it was bold.  Or do I just have to be positive about TPR's post?  It was true.  Wait, I guess I replied to MJP afterall...  It was... defeated?
