Yesterday I clicked it more than ten times and the numbers never changed.

That's weird- the numbers changed every time I clicked on it. :-?

The HS exists on videotape, not film. There is no "print".

At least Howard has a decent chance of being released in the US, as it's out in Europe.

Jaxxon was a smuggler/mercenary much like Han. Not a Jedi. And the fact Lucas allegedly hates Jaxxon makes me happy! ;)

It wasn't shot on film? What did they use, U-matic? If it was shot on video, there is no way they could make it look good on a big screen anyway, even if they had the original tapes to work from. Video from the '70s wasn't even equal to standard NTSC broadcast quality. It is a few years too old to have been shot on Betacam, which is NTSC broadcast quality, but still nowhere near the level needed to show in a theater.

Maybe it was shot on film (there are obviously film elements to it at least, i.e., stock footage from the movie), but film prints were never made; but rather, only telecined broadcast tapes were made to send to the TV stations? If that is the case, what happened to the original film negatives?

I know for a fact that there are film prints out there 2 have appeared on ebay in the past in 16mm.  One was a french print and another just the regular special.

Yes the fact that there are film prints floating around does not prove it was shot on film.  I never claimed it was.  But a special that supposedly cost a million dollars in 1978 you would think it was shot on film.

Back in the  sixties and seventies stations still used 16mm film prints for broadcast, That is how star trek was originally shown on nbc.

As for the holiday special supposedly the Negatives are lost or destroyed for the nelvana cartoon segment.

I know the Star Wars footage from the lost cut exists on film.  The scene with the little guy running through the legs of the man on stilts and vader and the imperial walking down death star  corridor. The stock footage of the falcon and the star destroyer.

As for the newly shot footage of the wookiees and chewie, Luke, Han and Leia.  Someone must know if it was shot on video.

I know that in the 1980's u-matic was used for video masters.  All of the Carl Macek Robotech was originally on u-matic tapes.  When they went to do the dvds the whole show had to be recut from scratch and the film originals were telecined from Macross and the other shows used.  Recently they had to do the same with Voltron.

That cost a million dollars?? If that's the case, then they definitely should have shot it on film. That's a feature film budget for the time, albeit a low budget. For example, Rocky (1976) cost 1.1 million.

Hmm this is worth mentioning.

I still have not seen the HS and I never will. There's only so much pain one can endure.

disclaimer: I was linked to the article from another site. I still hate the official site.

So they are interviewing Skot for the official site interesting.  He is the resident expert here on ot.com for the holiday special.  I also remember his deleted scenes site from back in the day.

If i did an interview with the official site i would consider myself a sellout since the oot is still buried and unrestored.  I will not give Lucas money for his site, magazine, or dvds until he does.

I may have caved on Indiana Jones IV but that is the only exception because i trusted Spielberg to keep lucas in check.

The last Lucas product i bought was the gout in 2006 and the quality is unwatchable even on my small properly calibrated  19 inch crt that is standard definition and 4:3.  Empire and Jedi are barely passable and star wars is just a joke.  The washed out colors, the badly damaged dirty print with dvnr smear.  Natural grain is not the problem as that is part of the image and should be there.  The removal of the grain on the 2004 lowry transfer is just an obomination.

Yeah, same here.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I think the fact it's legally unavailable probably helped. Most of the competition is out on video, or on tv every year.

It is interesting that the Paley Center can have a public screening of their archival copy though.

I looked over their upcoming schedules, and many of the other specials that didn't make the cut, (and some that were write-in votes) are getting screenings too!

Where were you in '77?

This is a great big middle finger to good old George-o.  Thank you society!

...Hey, if he lets this through, there's no telling the OOT's future.

I'm glad the John Denver special will be shown, too (I voted for that one several times-LOL). That one isn't available on video either (although the soundtrack is available).

So who is going to see this at the Paley Center NY? It starts tomorrow (Wed. Dec. 10), but is playing every day. Is there an organized outting to see this?

This is showing in LA as well...if you're on the other side of the country.

I'd be pretty cool to see this in a quality that doesn't make your eyes hurt... only it would still make youre eyes hurt, because it is the Holiday Special, but at least it would make your eyes hurt for the right reasons and not because it is a 10,000th generation VHS copy.

So, whose taking their camera into the theater to cam this thing for us? hehehe.
