Trumpy will simply say he’s too busy to see them anyway and go have a photo op with the Olympic curling team or something.

I am. I know the SC denial happened yesterday, but I just looked more deeply into it and I think that it’s totally pushing it for the GOP. From what I’ve read and heard so far it’s a bit of a common practice, but still. It was not only obvious but it was a bit ridiculous. Maybe it’s more ridiculous to me because I’m not used to it, but I was a bit surprised.

Well, I’m sure in the right circles, people are shaking their heads and wishing Justice Alito could get replaced with a real conservative.

One of the most notorious gerrymanders is in Maryland:

Yep, both parties do it. The only reason Republicans get more flak for it is 1) gerrymandering to favor urban areas over rural areas is much harder, more obvious, and has less electoral payoff than vice-versa, and 2) they’ve run most state governments since the last round of redistricting. Also, after the Voting Rights Act was gutted, politicians have felt freer to gerrymander along racial lines than they had been when the VRA was more restrictive.

I wish I could say Dems wouldn’t, for example, gerrymander Virginia in the opposite direction if they had the chance, but they probably would. You can argue a bit about what constitutes a fair map, but the truth is a computer can whip out a map that’s pretty close to everyone’s idea of fair in a matter of minutes.

Mrebo if you haven’t listened to 538’s podcast series on gerrymandering (or read the articles on the site, I think, which yhwx may have already linked to) I think it’s worth your time. It covers the issue from several different angles, touching on both the who and the why.

I read a 538 article that focused on PA, something along the lines of gerrymandering not being so easy to fix. It was a lot to digest, I’ll see about the podcast.

“Rob Porter is a man of true integrity and honor, and I can’t say enough good things about him,” White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly said in an initial statement Tuesday about allegations that the top White House aide had abused an ex-wife.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was just as effusive.

“I have worked directly with Rob Porter nearly every day for the last year, and the person I know is someone of the highest integrity and exemplary character,” Sanders said. “Those of us who have the privilege of knowing him are better people because of it.”

Whoops.
