The system works!

http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-trump-judge-20171110-story.html

Brett J. Talley, President Trump’s nominee to be a federal judge in Alabama, has never tried a case, was unanimously rated “not qualified” by the American Bar Assn.’s judicial rating committee, has practiced law for only three years and, as a blogger last year, displayed a degree of partisanship unusual for a judicial nominee, denouncing “Hillary Rotten Clinton” and pledging support for the National Rifle Assn.

On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee, on a party-line vote, approved him for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench.

Talley, 36, is part of what Trump has called the “untold story” of his success in filling the courts with young conservatives.

“The judge story is an untold story. Nobody wants to talk about it,” Trump said last month, standing alongside Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in the White House Rose Garden. “But when you think of it, Mitch and I were saying, that has consequences 40 years out, depending on the age of the judge — but 40 years out.”

Civil rights groups and liberal advocates see the matter differently. They denounced Thursday’s vote, calling it “laughable” that none of the committee Republicans objected to confirming a lawyer with as little experience as Talley to preside over federal trials.

“He’s practiced law for less than three years and never argued a motion, let alone brought a case. This is the least amount of experience I’ve seen in a judicial nominee,” said Kristine Lucius, executive vice president of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.

You have an interesting definition of “The system works!”.

I didn’t say who it worked for.

This has to more to do than just power.

Maybe there’s something about Hollywood that attracts that sort of person. Or, even scarier, perhaps that sort of person is just much more likely to succeed.

It’s not specific to Hollywood, it’s everywhere. The only reason we’re hearing about this stuff from Hollywood is because we know those peoples names, and often the names of the victims. People in less famous professions aren’t so lucky (or ones in professions where political affiliation will save you from any amount of heinous crimes).

I didn’t say it was specific to Hollywood, just that it may be more commonplace in Hollywood than other professions. And you’re right, it is only a big deal because these people are famous. If this kind of abuse was happening in the Lawyer ‘industry;’ I doubt people would even hear about it, and those that did probably wouldn’t care beyond a passing “that’s unfortunate.”

Maybe it is more commonplace to an extent, due to the nature of things like the auditioning process, dressing rooms and such, but this kind of thing is commonplace everywhere. It’s happening in law, I can assure you that. And, I know that was just a random example, but it’s one of the most dangerous professions for this, as the predators there know exactly how to get away with it.

Not random at all. The articles I linked place ‘Lawyer’ as the 2nd most psychopath-prone profession, right under CEO and right above Media. But perhaps I shouldn’t have said ‘if’, because I’m sure it is happening, people just aren’t hearing or caring about it.

Part of it is also the “gig” nature of entertainment work - you’re working with these people for a few weeks or months at a time, then the gig is done and you never have to see them again. This breeds both predatory behavior and silencing of victims, whereas in most fields, you’re stuck with the same people for years at a time, so a predator is less likely to go after someone if they know they’re always going to be around, and a victim is more likely to speak up if they have to see their predator for God knows how long.

It also happens very often in tech.

Hopefully, going forward, when a man in power says to a girl/boy (who is his junior in an organisation and/or in age) that if they tell anybody how he behaved, they’ll “Never work in this industry again!”. They will just laugh in his face, remind him about what happened to assholes like Weinstein and Spacey and then reach for Social Media. Or even better, the men in power will have worked this out already and alter their behaviour. They have so much more to lose.

The proliferation of consumer recording devices (e.g. audio/video recorders in the form of phones that everyone is expected to have) seems to so far have been a good thing (thanks BLM). I can only think a lot of sexual harassment cases that were previously “he said/she said” will turn into “he said/she said – and she has it on tape”, which changes the legal dynamic significantly. Although there’s also the wiretap laws/recording people without permission angle which I think deserves serious consideration.

On the downside, I suppose it’s only a matter of time before a James O’Keefe-type character records something innocuous and edits it to appear incriminating, so there’ll always be some assclown to rain on every parade.

“Take the Bible. Zachariah and Elizabeth for instance. Zachariah was extremely old to marry Elizabeth and they became the parents of John the Baptist,” Ziegler said choosing his words carefully before invoking Christ. “Also take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus.”

“There’s just nothing immoral or illegal here,” Ziegler concluded. “Maybe just a little bit unusual.”

  1. To compare Mary and Joseph to what Roy Moore did, offends me as Christian.

  2. The auditor obviously does not believe in the Bible. If he did, he would not call Mary and Joseph the parents of Jesus. Mary is a parent of Jesus, Joseph is not. Joseph is merely married to his mother.

Why is the state auditor going to bat for this creep anyway? Doesn’t seem to fit the job description. Are they in the same country club or something?

Amazing how quickly this has shifted from He’s innocent! to He didn’t do anything people thousands of years ago allegedly did so it’s actually okay in 2017, especially if you’re Southern.

Same gentleman’s club, more like. It’s really no surprise anymore when the most outspoken of our modern-day Pharisees turn out to be compensating for personal actions that could only generously be called moral failings. Moore’s not the first, nor the worst, nor the last, in our modern-day parade of the depraved hypocrites.

This state auditor sure seems to bother his Bible to the same degree as Moore, defending child sex predators no less. You have to wonder if they share a true kinship of faiths, as it were.
