The ACLU says Americans can refuse to give CBP agents their passwords, but at the risk of being detained and having their devices taken from them. Foreign travelers can be denied access to the country if they refuse to comply.
To be very clear, this isn’t Increasing because of Trump, it is just increasing over the past few years.
What would you do in this situation? as much as i hate it, i would probably cave and give over whatever they want after an initial protest/insiting on my right to not hand it over. No one wants to have their travel plans ruined and get stuck at the border.
Here’s a related story.

As a former DHS employee myself, there would have to have been a directive change, for these CBP officers to do this. They cannot just take it upon themselves to up the stakes like this at border checkpoints. It is possible that there is significant intel that admin feels confident enough to move in this direction but they certainly won’t openly share that intel with the public. At least not in significant detail. I know law enforcement would probably get the intel to keep them in the loop.
I only ever did what was required of me and nothing more. I did answer questions to the best of my ability and I made helpful suggestions to passengers so future trips would be less invasive or time consuming. That of course was in relation to flying. Border Patrol is a bit more complicated and intense with all they have on their plate.
I hope they get it sorted so that folks having a legitimate reason/need/want to enter the country can do so with minimal hassle.
