http://www.npr.org/2017/04/11/523313829/more-travelers-are-being-asked-for-their-cellphones-and-passwords-entering-u-s

The ACLU says Americans can refuse to give CBP agents their passwords, but at the risk of being detained and having their devices taken from them. Foreign travelers can be denied access to the country if they refuse to comply.

To be very clear, this isn’t Increasing because of Trump, it is just increasing over the past few years.

What would you do in this situation? as much as i hate it, i would probably cave and give over whatever they want after an initial protest/insiting on my right to not hand it over. No one wants to have their travel plans ruined and get stuck at the border.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/10/us/federal-judge-strikes-down-texas-voter-id-law.html?_r=0

A federal judge ruled on Monday that the voter identification law the Texas Legislature passed in 2011 was enacted with the intent to discriminate against black and Hispanic voters, raising the possibility that the state’s election procedures could be put back under federal oversight.

In a long-running case over the legality of one of the toughest voter ID laws in the country, the judge found that the law violated the federal Voting Rights Act.

The judge, Nelva Gonzales Ramos of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas, had made a similar ruling in 2014, but after Texas appealed her decision, a federal appellate court instructed her to review the issue once more.

The appeals court — the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, in New Orleans — found that Judge Ramos had relied too heavily on Texas’ history of discriminatory voting measures and other evidence it labeled “infirm” and asked her to reweigh the question of discriminatory intent.

In her ruling on Monday, Judge Ramos wrote that the evidence cited by the Fifth Circuit “did not tip the scales” in favor of the state.

Here’s a related story.

http://www.npr.org/2017/03/29/521920595/canadians-report-more-scrutiny-and-rejection-at-u-s-border-checkpoints

As a former DHS employee myself, there would have to have been a directive change, for these CBP officers to do this. They cannot just take it upon themselves to up the stakes like this at border checkpoints. It is possible that there is significant intel that admin feels confident enough to move in this direction but they certainly won’t openly share that intel with the public. At least not in significant detail. I know law enforcement would probably get the intel to keep them in the loop.

I only ever did what was required of me and nothing more. I did answer questions to the best of my ability and I made helpful suggestions to passengers so future trips would be less invasive or time consuming. That of course was in relation to flying. Border Patrol is a bit more complicated and intense with all they have on their plate.

I hope they get it sorted so that folks having a legitimate reason/need/want to enter the country can do so with minimal hassle.

FFS, is that any way to treat an American citizen and a NASA employee?

Oh, that explains it…

Oh my god.

I keep hearing how Spicer was supposedly well-respected in Washington prior to taking this job, and I just keep thinking people are talking about someone else.

There’s putting your foot in your mouth, and then there’s swallowing your entire leg. Sean might want one of his old jobs back, if only for this weekend.

Oh, that explains it…

I did not say I condone it nor did I say why it is being done. I discussed only the possibilities I know of from my own experiences. Now yes, I understand, I’ve been told my prior experience means shit here. Maybe their own agencies have asked for tighter scrutiny when their employees leave and come back in to the country. They have security clearance concerns too. Top secret projects, black ops projects, none of which any of us controls.

This is why Reince Priebus needs to go. He’s a shmuck.

I don’t think NASA has any black ops stuff going on. The NASA years of my father’s long career is the only time where I have the clearest picture of what he did for a living. As for the rest, he could have been fighting Nazis on the Moon for all I really know.

It was just an example. NASA does get to make use of Black Budget funding. There’s a cyber war on at this point I guess and maybe agencies are seriously concerned about breaches … maybe, for some unknown reason, it’s specific people or where they are going that they’re concerned. Since the articles don’t reveal any of that information all we can do is guess.

Don’t forget about that other really classified one, UR-Anus.

Read about a few things I was not aware of in this article.

http://theweek.com/speedreads/691527/officials-conclude-russia-knew-syria-chemical-attack-advance

The U.S. claimed Iraq had WMDs. More recently, the U.S. claimed Syria used gas on its own people in 2013–a claim that was debunked by the U.N. Meanwhile, there is actually an independent international organization that investigates these kinds of things.

Who are you going to believe?

I find there are very few independent organizations that are truly independent. With the past year of false narratives still steaming ahead full throttle it will become more difficult to sort through and find the facts.

Boots on the ground with real time and verifiable intelligence would be my preferred goto though.

It’s very strange that I couldn’t find any press on that, but ok.
