https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2017/03/03/in-leaked-document-the-case-for-trumps-muslim-ban-takes-another-huge-hit/?utm_term=.d94b236e9986

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow had an important scoop on Thursday night that further undercuts the substantive case for Trump’s ban, which would restrict entry into the country by refugees and migrants from select Muslim-majority countries. Maddow obtained a new internal Department of Homeland Security document that reached this key judgment:

“We assess that most foreign-born, US-based violent extremists likely radicalized several years after their entry to the United States, limiting the ability of screening and vetting officials to prevent their entry because of national security concerns.”

This new document is separate from another DHS document that was leaked to the press last week. That one also undercut the case for the ban, concluding that “country of citizenship is unlikely to be a reliable indicator of potential terrorist activity.”

The new document obtained by Maddow weakens the central rationale for the ban, which is to put a temporary delay on entry into the United States for the express purpose of tightening up our vetting procedures. DHS’s conclusion appears to be that vetting procedures in particular are not that useful in screening out people who radicalize later, and that most foreign-born emigrants to the United States who become violent extremists fall into that category.

“The national security justification for this whole ban — this setting up of extreme vetting — is bull-pucky,” Maddow said. “There’s nothing they can set up at the border to tell you years down the road who might become … a radical and violent person years from now.”

This complements the conclusion of the other leaked memo. Taken together, they appear to mean that DHS’s analysts believe that singling out those countries makes little sense and that the problem in preventing terrorism by immigrants does not lie in our vetting procedures as they are, which already screen out the immediate threats.

I don’t think that Jeff Sessions having contact with Russia necessarily means anything nefarious was going on, but either way he committed perjury and he must step down.

And regarding the Trump tweet;

It is so pathetic that the Dems have still not approved my full Cabinet.

That’s absurd. Trump has picked some of the worst possible people for his cabinet. Every single Democrat should be denying picks like Jeff Sessions (I’m looking at you, Joe Manchin).

http://thehill.com/homenews/house/322169-two-republicans-sign-onto-effort-demanding-trumps-tax-returns

Two House Republicans endorsed a Democratic effort on Friday calling on the House and Senate committees with oversight of the Internal Revenue Service to request copies of President Trump’s tax returns.

Reps. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) and Walter Jones (R-N.C.) signed a letter urging the chairmen of the House Ways and Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee to ask for copies of Trump’s tax documents from the last decade.

The letter was spearheaded by Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) and signed by most of the 193-member House Democratic Caucus. It argues that letting members of Congress see what’s in Trump’s tax returns would clear up any questions about whether his business ties offer conflicts of interest.

Trump broke with four decades of precedent by refusing to release his tax returns after becoming the GOP presidential nominee. He cited an ongoing IRS audit, though the agency has said taxpayers are free to release their information at any time.

“Disclosure would serve the public interest of clarifying President Trump’s conflicts of interest in office, the potential for him to personally benefit from tax reform, and ensure that he is not receiving any preferential treatment from the IRS,” the letter states.

“We believe the powerful and respected Committees on Finance and Ways and Means have the responsibility to ensure oversight of the executive branch by requesting a review of President Trump’s tax returns and moving toward a formal release of these documents to the public.”

It’s good that this hasn’t faded away. Trump’s excuses for not releasing his tax returns have always been bullshit and it sure seems like he’s hiding something, very possibly something Russia-related.

In more important news, Jeff Sessions doesn’t like poor and/or minority voters. Big shocker there.

https://www.texastribune.org/2017/02/27/voter-id-case-trumps-team-drops-argument-against-texas/

I don’t get the argument at all that somehow minorities aren’t capable of getting an ID. It’s not unreasonable to need an ID to vote.

Just do a few seconds of Googling and you’ll find tons of evidence speaking to how this disenfranchises minorities and the poor (and the elderly). I assume you’ll just dismiss it, but it’s real.

I know, I’ve seen all that, but I still am not convinced that it’s a horrible obstacle to voting.

An obstacle doesn’t have to be “horrible” to be a violation of Constitutional rights.

It is more difficult to get a license if you were born before the Great Depression or in a completely rural area,

I would think I most of the people born before the Great Depression, probably shouldn’t have a driver’s license. Anyone born that long ago would be at least 88 years old. There needs to be some other form of ID that is usable at the polls other than driver’s licenses.

but it’s still doable and you have years to do it because we all know exactly when the elections will be.

Years? An election is held every year. Counting the primaries, every six months. So if they don’t want to miss any elections, they only have months to obtain the proper ID. It is not okay to disenfranchise even for primaries. It is a violation of their Constitutional rights.

The worse problem is election day not being on a Sunday and not treated as a holiday, but even that is remedied somewhat by early voting in states where that’s applicable.

I could understand making election day a holiday, but Sunday? Why Sunday? Why not Saturday?

I agree, though the fact that so many of Trump’s team have met with Russians secretly and lied about doing so is a little suspicious.

And that’s without getting into the fact that the time it’s taking is completely normal (actually faster than normal), and there are still many positions for which he hasn’t yet nominated anyone.

Isn’t that the title of the new Dreamworks animated film coming out this month? 😉

Hey! Maybe that is something we could have some fun with! Come up with names for a movie based on the Trump Presidency. This might call for a separate thread. What do guys think?

One political thread is probably all this forum can handle.

It’s unintentionally hilarious Alec Baldwin is voicing the title character in this:

This wouldn’t be a thread for debate, just a thread for people to come up with funny names for a movie about the Trump Presidency. I would put in the first post of the thread, that if you want to debate anything anyone says in the thread, take to the “Politics 2: Electric Boogaloo” thread.

I don’t think it was unintentional. It’s too on-the-nose, someone must’ve known what they were doing.

The length of time it takes to make an animated film makes it difficult to put topical humor in though.

True, I thought Baldwin’s Trump impression dated further back, but the earliest I could find was October 2016. It’s possible, however unlikely, that they already had the lines recorded by someone else, then at last minute had Baldwin dub over them.

Here’s a fun one.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/03/europe/polish-politician-remarks-women/

The European Parliament has launched a hate speech investigation into a Polish politician after he stated that “women must earn less than men, because they are weaker, they are smaller, they are less intelligent” during a debate this week on the gender pay gap.

Janusz Korwin-Mikke is an independent member of the European Parliament who founded a right-wing political party, the Coalition for the Renewal of the Republic – Freedom and Hope, in 2015. He has previously said that women should not be allowed to vote and was investigated for incitement to rape in 2014 over remarks he made to the European Parliament.

Hate speech investigation? Obviously, the European Parliament doesn’t value free speech?

Question: when this guy made the remakes, did him make in Parliament, while Parliament was in session?
