Cool project idea! i did come across some group doing fansubs or early Pokemon episodes, and I *think* someone doing fandubs, but I can't remember.
Only fansub Pokemon ep I have is the infamous Porygon ep.
keep in touch!

I have found those episodes in youtube, the first four, the other ones I don't know how to find them, as I looked before the whiscash vs the other pokemon never aired anywhere because of earthquakes that occured in japan....the other one with may... don't know....
I watched Episode one of the dub the other day, and noticed that it had its own music at points; I'm rather surprised that they began changing music so soon. However, in that case, I was glad they did; the sean with the Spearow chasing after Ash (Onisuzume?) acutally, IMO, worked better with their music; in the original version, it was just one of those songs that were repeated every other episode.

I've gotten back to thinking about this, and I might be able to pull some stuff off, but I've run into a few possible gotchas.
1. In several places (esp. ep.3, 9, 66) lines will need to be rerecorded because of changes in the animation.
2. Episodes 9, 18, 66, 78, 101, 110 feature actual cuts; it's possible other episodes after 160 also have cuts. (The original series is 276 episodes)
3. 35, 38 and 252 were never released here. (38 would need to be re-edited anyway, some scenes need to be dropped to 12 fps) They would need full dubs if they are to be included.
4. Some scenes, e.g., the "Viridian City" sequence in episode 78, would need to be redubbed so as to be able to remix the music properly (there is actually an English version of the song playing in the Japanese version - it's Type:WILD, English version is by a "Robbie Danzie".)
5. A couple new "Who's That Pokémon?" would need to be recorded, e.g., Slowpoke, Obaba (!), Daruma (!), and a few others, to make up for the fact that some were changed for the US release.
6. OPEDs apart from "Type:WILD" (recorded in English by Robbie Danzie) and "Meowth's Party" (recorded in English by Maddie Blaustein, Eric Stuart and Rachel Lillis) would have to be in Japanese unless someone dared to do English versions... I defy anyone to do an English version of Pokémon Hara-Hara-Hara-Hara Relay (Muzukashiban) ! Another possibility is the "splice" - I managed to make the 3rd US theme fit quite well over the original unedited Japanese footage.
7. Movies? Maybe, but prolly not. 2, 4 and 5 need work ... especially 4 would need extensive work. 1 and 3 need none.

Just recently started messing around with Pokemon stuff again. Have you made any more progress on this project, Molly?
I was wondering - do you know where I could get copies of some of the banned/unreleased episodes with English subs? Namely:
Slowking’s Day
The Legend of Dratini
Electric Soldier Porygon
The Ice Cave!
Shaking Island Battle! Dojoach VS Namazun!!
Ash and May! Heated Battles in Hoenn!!Did anything ever come of the Japanese version of the first movie being preserved?
Thanks!
Actually someone did do a fan-dub of it, but i’ve not been able to find it:https://forums.serebii.net/threads/fandub-thread.118207/page-34#post-4218699
