Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

I saw it Wednesday Night at a Press Screening, and I have to say it was excellent. The plot is much more complex then in the other two films, but in a very good way. I don't want to spoil anything, but I'll just say the whole movie was a thrill ride that never stopped, much like the other two. It's better than Dead Man's Chest, and is certainly as competent a film as Curse of the Black Pearl, but I will always like COTBP more because of its sheer rewatchability. At World's End is great, but not as rewatchable as the other two due to its mostly plot driven feel.

Was it better than the last one? I really didn't like the second one all that much.

After the critics panned TMNT, I really don't trust them anymore.

Nope. It's a brilliant marketing strategy, as it basically makes it implicit that this movie IS the pirate genre.

Some radio ads on the way home just now referred to it as Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. So it is being referred to, at least in some ads, by its full title.

I think critics are just being stupid. Confusing plot? Makes no sense? Can't follow it? Wow, I must be Einstein or something, cause I didn't have any trouble following it. Johnny Depp said something pretty relevant about the reviews of the sequels in an interview a few weeks ago that, because the sequels will do so well, critics are bound and determined to pound them. He said something like "It's in the rules: You must take a dump on the sequel."

My 6 year old cousin and his 10 year old firend went with me to see it, and he understood it just fine. I thought it gave you all the required information, but now a days unless a character stares right at the audience and says " okay now listen, I am about to reveal something extremely important to later events so you might want to listen to what I am about to say" critics seem too stupid to get it. The only people to blame for the dumbing down of cinema are critics. A director should not have to comprimise his movie's quality because a critic is too lazy to pay attention and take in what is being said. And another thing, why is it so hard to set in a theatre for 3 hours? I mean come on, people can set on a couch in front of a t.v. watching a sports game for 4 or more hours but do not ask them to set for three hours in a comfortable chair in a dark room with a kick ass film, amazing sound, and digitaly projected picture.

A couch is more comfortable than a chair. Also, at home, one can easily pause their TV (most people have some kind of DVR these days). They can pause for the phone or to use the bathroom or for whatever. When you're in a theater, you're around a bunch of people you don't know. So, if you need to use the restroom, you know have to get in a bunch of peoples way to get out. And you're going to miss part of the movie. At home, you simply pause the movie, use the restroom, and come back. I personally had a system that I used when the LOTR movies were in theaters. I would wait until I was seated, go to the restroom before the movie started, and then not drink anything at all until after the end of the movie. I also didn't drink anything but water starting at 20 mins before showtime. I did that because I missed part of FOTR on my first viewing due to a bathroom break.

I personally wouldn't mind sitting in a theater for 3 hours, as long as all the other people were just as respectful as I am. Turn off your cellphone (or set it to vibrate), use the bathroom before the feature starts, don't yell at the screen continuously (that's forgiven during midnight screenings only), don't bring your crying children to a movie unless it's specifically for kids (Harry Potter is not specifically for kids, but Shrek might be considered for that category). These are the reasons I rarely go to the movies anymore.

Just got back from watching it. Pretty durn good. I think I like the second one better, but this certainly had a more satisfying ending.

And if the critics serioulsy couldn't understand this, they really are dumb.

Complete trash, it reminds us why Orlando Bloom has the emotional depth of a teaspoon, Keira Knightly should take up acting classes because she is as wooden as a chair, the monkey is a far better actor Johnny Depp, the plot and the writing is as incoherent as ever and having 10 awful Johnny Depps in the one movie is as bad as an idea of running about in traffic.

Well I guess I'm going to piss off some people in this thread when I say that I didn't really care for this movie either.

It was like ROTS but with pirates...

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Look, I thought the movie was good. But by no means was it the bee's knees, nor was it better than the original film. I honestly believe that the second and third installments took what was basically an unassuming, rollicking, fun swashbuckler and tried to turn it into an epic trilogy of Biblical proportions. It simply doesn't have the substance to pull it off. These three films won't be remember as one of the great trilogies, but perhaps as three fun films of the time.

I'm not sure that everyone has given the plot of World's End if they thought it was easy to understand, let alone claim that a 10 year-old could understand it. Perhaps its more that I just didn't believe it - a lot of the dialogue in the film seemed to be the characters explaining the plot to us - and the explanations were almost as convoluted as comic book continuity (and if you've read as many as I have, you'll understand what I mean!). Probably the aspect that I had most trouble understanding was each characters motives: why they did what they did.

Particularly in the Jack Sparrow scenes, Pirates 3 seemed like a movie that knew it was a movie...

But for all my criticisms, let me re-iterate that I thought this was a good film.

Exactly....hence my ROTS comparison....

which ruined this film for me....I don't want or need the characters explaining anything....it spoils the fun...

I didn't like this movie for several reasons, but one of my particular gripes about it was that they realized that everybody likes Jack Sparrow and they therefore turned him into some kind of stupid cartoon character. The scenes with multiple Jacks made me want to go and slap whichever screenwriter came up with the bright idea in the first place.
