Pirates of The Caribbean: Extended Edition - A Spence Edit

Hello everyone, I have nearly wrapped up a project i have been wanting to do for a while. There were a lot of very high quality deleted scenes for the first POTC, and I thought it would be fun to have a longer version of the film incorporating these scenes. Every deleted scene from the dvd is included here, adding about 20 minutes to the running time. Things that have changed:

* More Jack Sparrow antics. He also has a few more serious moments, mainly with Elizabeth, that add a little more dimension to his character.
* More of Norrington. He's less of a stock military character. In his added scenes, you can really feel that he cares of Elizabeth and he is much more sympathetic when the love triangle doesn't go his way.
* More fun little character moments with the crews of the different ships.
* More of Will and Jack in Tortuga, including some extra references to the Disney ride.
* More of Elizabeth and Jack on the island. My favorite additional scenes are in this section.

Overall these scenes just add a little bit more to an already great film. All of the characters benefit from this extra time.

I know that with some versions of this DVD, there was a third disc in the package titled "The Lost Disc". Can somebody who has this disc let me know if there are any other deleted scenes on it that are not included in the 2-disc edition?

The project is nearly complete, but I am a little stuck on a certain aspect. Anyone who has seen the deleted scenes knows that they are 1:85:1 and not 2:35:1 like the rest of the film. I have already made them anamorphic, but I still need to add the extra black bars to make the extra scenes 2:35:1. If anyone has a method for doing this, please let me know!

Thank you for your interest!

The 3rd disc does not contain any deleted scenes (and FYI, the PAL version features very bad NTSC->PAL video).

alright, widescreem dilema solved. I discovered the cropping filter in Womble. Novel idea huh? The answer was right in front of me the whole time, hah. Anyway, the project is nearly done. The only scene i was not able to fit in is the scene toward the end where the bird poops on the two navy men. It's a funny little bit, but given its context it would stand out too much to really fit. The audio and stuff just wouldn't really work, it would disrupt the flow of the film. The finished project should be up on Demonoid in the next couple of days.

In the mean time, check out my King Kong edit that's already up on Demonoid! (Shameless plug)

And i will try to make a DVD-5 of this one.

I would STRONGLY recommend against using Womble like that. Whenever you use it's filters or fades it re-encodes the video in very poor quality.

Test it before committing to it, you may need to re-encode with avisynth or virtualdubmod prior to importing those clips into Womble.

My Matrix edits took much longer because I didn't realize how bad Womble's mpeg encoder was when I started and I had to go back and redo a lot of work.

thanks for that Doctor M, I'll do a test encode and see how it looks.

yeah, the womble re-encode sucks. Anybody know of another program i can use to crop the top and bottom of the video?

I still use Ulead Media Studio Pro 7. Pro 8 can crop, but it has so many bugs. With Pro 7 you have to use additional black bars to achieve your goal, but for me this works perfectly.

I complained to Womble about their encoder and suggested if they couldn't improve it to at least allow external encoders. No luck there.

I finally settled on using VirtualDubMod (it can load mpeg files) for simple croping, filtering and resizing (I'm lazy) and frameserving to CCE.
For any crossfades or transitions I used avisynth and again took that to CCE.

Just make sure your framerates match. That is if your main movie still has 24 -> 30 pulldown flags make sure you add flags to your re-encoded clips before going back to Womble with them.

Okay, i think i've got it all figured out. My plan is to release this in DVD5 first, then maybe, maybe, maybe do a DVD9 version with footage from the newly refurbished Pirates ride at Disney World. Hopefully i can get that, but it'll just be me holding a camera on the ride.

AVSFilmCutter - it is freeware and workd with avisynth. Maybe worth to be tried out.

Where can I find Ulead Media Studio Pro 7? The only version I can find is version 8. Thanks in advance.

i didnt find it either. I ended up using Sony Vegas to do the cropping. There was very little loss in quality.

There's a DIVX version posted on demonoid, with a dvd file to come in a week or so. I'd really love an awesome cover for this, if anybody is interested in making one. Less floating heads, more cool pirate imagery (ships, jolly roger, stuff like that)

This sounds like a cool project, for one of my favourite films. Anyway, here's a couple of ideas I had kicking around. Please note that these are works in progress and feedback will be taken into account...

You'll just have to release both so everyone can print them both out and put them in one of those clear DVD cases.
