Wait, so 720p is better than 1080i?
1080i requires a CRT. All other tvs convert it to 720p but add a blur to the image in the process.
If you don't like interlacing it is.

Progressive is usually better, unless something is shot interlaced. It all depends. There's no common rule.

Getting back on track, here are some images from the P&S VHS. Let me know if there are any specific parts you want to see. They are presented in their native resolution. The first image is... ironic?

If you guys know of any way to get a better capture of the video, let me know.

Rubbish, all non-CRT TVs deinterlace 1080i etc. They don't convert it to 720p (unless they're old 720p sets) they convert it to 1080p60, whilst losing about 5% off the margin (19% in total) to overscan. Even if 1080p was a broadcast format it would still need to be resized for overscan when displayed on a tv. I'm not sure why you think it "blurs" the image - modern tv sets have excellent deinterlace chips.
720p images also have to be converted to the TVs resolution whilst losing at least 19% of the resolution to overscan.

Nice, thanks. :)

Those actually look pretty good, all things considered. Can you post some shots of the crawl or the duel?

I think he means vhs resolution. ;)

Of course VHS ain't gonna resolve 720 lines,
but the torrent description contained no tech specs, so there :P

Looks like the torrent is 720x480 MPEG-2 with PCM sound
That is correct, it is showing up like that. However, when I play it the resolution is closer to the standard 640x480, so I have no idea where that number is coming from.
What I meant is that each of those six images have not been upscaled or manipulated in any way. Though, now that I look at it, it looks like that website has indeed resized the image, even though it said it wouldn't.
Here is the crawl, showing off the shortcomings of my capture:

Here is the duel, sometimes cutting off Obi-Wan or Qui-gon:

http://s28.postimg.org/omyjisr0d/duel7.png

And here's one thing I thought was weird, Qui-gon talking out of frame. Just another consequence of P&S:
I was just now watching the duel, and when Darth Maul ignites his lightsaber, the audio for the blade on the left comes out of the right channel and the for the blade on the right the left channel. It seems that you may have your channels backwards.

I just watched it to confirm, and from what I could tell, the blade audio was coming from both channels. Perhaps it is a problem with the source? I have no idea how the channels could be backwards, but LucasFilm made the same mistake in 2004 for the DVDs...

That'd definitely be awesome along with AOTC. I think they only released ROTS on Widescreen VHS in the U.K.
I have the UK TPM VHS releases in P&S and also W/S. The (UK) AOTC VHS was only available in P&S. As far as I know, the ROTS VHS is also P&S only. I've never seen a W/S version.

On the other hand, this VHS includes six frames missing from althor's mkv.
From the script's output:
145749 is a reel change
79188, 137799-800 are LD side changes
78940 & 79452 are neither-- they're mysterious mysteries

Glad this was useful to somebody, at least.
For your consideration I offer another Avisynth script
which takes the Austrian ORF DVB broadcast and the TPM VCD (both from 'spleen)
and aligns both of them with the previous “unified theory” script, above.
Sample is there
Script is there
Comments at the bottom of the script give
reel changes, LD side changes, and now include the VCD disc change.
As always, the first frame of the last shot
and last frame of the first shot are included in the comments.
Believed by some to contain all the frames, this cut of TPM
should in theory match the cinema DTS discs without any audio edits.
Of course some editing will be required to join the reels together,
but no intra-reel edits
