If you’re interested, send me a Private Message. I can either tell you how to run the filter, or since I’m a CC subscriber, I can do the process for you. Just a thought; you don’t have to take me up on it. Either way, keep up the good work. 😃

Ok will be in touch.

This looks awesome, just wondering if the alien subtitles are burned into the frames?

Yes, it’s whats giving me hangups at the moment, getting it perfect is very important.

This might be useless info but I found this very good quality pic of the original senate scene, I couldn’t find where it originally came from but I’m hoping that there’s a clip of it in this quality.

It’s from starwars.com and there’s no corresponding video.

Just saying that if there was a clip in this quality and you’d rotoscope them in it’d be an improvement over the current one.

For comparison sake.

Free Taa’s aides have more detail in the second one.

Jedit: apparently the link didn’t work properly on mobile…all apologies, I just updated the link

That’s a shame. Guess we’ll have to wait until Poita’s scan to get it in better quality

Yep its frustrating to see that in so much detail. I think Poitas scans are a year away at best.

Ive recreated the subtitles in photoshop, matching as close as possible to the AOTC subs. Its not perfect, the longer ones definitly do not match, But it will do for now. Ive also thrown on a bit of grain and a teeny bit of gate weave. Although I’m reconsidering adding grain and weave as they are sort of against my restoration philosophy.

Am I missing something? Smithers is entirely correct, the linked image is 200x90 and has zero visible detail.

It’s definitely a mobile problem. Here’s an imgur link to it that should work properly

I didn’t realize it would take that long for the scans. I wonder if maybe we could fund for him to just scan the changed portions of the film and the scenes with subtitles.

As for adding grain I say go for it! I’ve seen someone just add grain to the Blu Ray and it brought out a better picture and more detail on top of just looking like a proper film!

Holy Shit! That is an AMAZING discovery. I can definitely use it, since my reconstruction technique is fully based on recompositing from HD images. So the more HD images I give to my solution, the best result I get.
I’ll try to use it and share the HD result within the next days.

Thank you very very very much Trillary Dump for this !

PS : does someone know where it comes from ?

On a side note. Where did you get an SDTV rip? I’m curious to check it out and see if it looks better than the laserdisc

Two SDTV rips are available on MySpleen : Austrian ORF Ein (which was also broadcast in HD but not recorded) and Scandinavian Euro Canal Plus.

ORF 1 looks like having a better horizontal resolution than LD, but a lower vertical resolution. Crawl and subtitles are in German. It is dubbed in Germain. End credits are missing.

Euro Canal plus looks like the opposite (better vertical resolution but lower horizontal resolution), and shows extra parasites.

Both have missing frames.

IMHO, merging those both SDTV rip gives a better result than the Laserdisc (except for the audio). But if you just take one of them, the Laserdisc looks better.

Feel free to PM me if you want me to share those rips.

He maybe referring to a fan preservation that was released yesterday called The Phantom Menace - A “Good Enough” Reconstruction by SparkeySawyer. I feel and I’m just assuming he thought that was yours.

Not sure how, I haven’t released it yet.

Let me be more specific. I was referring to Candidate 5 of your reconstruction, not the sixth one. There must be a misunderstanding or something.

Ah, I just didn’t expect anyone to take the unfinished versions I sent for quality control and use them for other projects.

So how far off do you estimate you are from finishing a new release candidate?

Workin on it.

I’ve also been hard at work looking for more reference sources. Particually for the subtitles. I don’t think the bootleg gives us a clear enough look at exactly how they are laid out.

Some of you might now that the Widescreen collectors VHS came with a film strip from a print. There’s around 300 copies on ebay and I looked through all of them to find one that would have subtitles. No luck but I did save every decent photo of the cells I could. Here they all are. https://imgur.com/a/KyoQPZW

The subtitles aren’t theatrical on the widescreen VHS. I think they might even be in the letterboxing, but can’t remember. My tape is at my mom’s and I don’t think any of us have a working VCR, so I don’t really have a way to verify for you, but that’s my memory of it.
