3 for Star Wars, 3 for LOTR ... why is it bad? At least Jackson's giving people the choice of which version to watch. And no, I'm not counting the special "giftsets," etc that you did, but either way, Star Wars DEFINITELY hasnt had just one.

Widescreen and fullscreen? Sheesh.

Seems like there's a double standard.....

Stupid Luca$.... offering a cheaper set without the bonus disc. Money grubber.

Oh, I wasn't aware that one was widescreen and one was fullscreen. Sorry for the discrepancy there. Fixed it with the widescreen version box for you.

how so? if you mean the box set after all three where done that doesn't really count (imho) because it was known from the beginning. and i believe i heard they had a get the box offer with the proofs of purchases of the three movies and shipping cost

-Darth Simon

Actualy you didn't even need to send in the proofs of puchases. You just had to go to the website it told you and pay $3. Shipping did take awile though.

I'm glad these are coming out I never bought the theatrical releses of TT or RotK and now my local walmart only carries the full screen versions.

Just for fun another difference is that the SW 05 dvd sets were made in mexico if I remember correctly. But now most dvds are. At least for the US releases.

You f**cking bell-end!! He's not counting widescreen and fullscreen as seperate releases. He's counting seperate releases as seperate releases. We had the crappy 2004 SEs in '04, then the crappy SEs in a new box in 2005, now we are getting a release in '06 as well. Not to mention countless VHS and laserdisc releases. None of us give a shit about Lucas rereleasing the films over and over - we just want him to release the O-OT ONCE in good, anamorphic quality.

Now, TROLL, please, piss off. Maybe we are a bunch of sad geeks for being here talking/complaining about this stuff, but what you are doing is double-sad.

I'm more than content with my EE set. I don't see any real reson to upgrade unless you want the bonus footage. If I wanted the theatrical versions I can probably get them for less then $10 each.

Well concerning the 2005 boxset without the bonus disc (or the 2nd annaul SW trilogy release), I think it's Fox's policy to release a single disc edition after the DVD is released, and the same with dreamworks.

Yeah Walmart has them for like $9.96 but my local walmart only has them in fullscreen. I don't know why so many people still prefere fullscreen.

I like the idea of seemless branching for releasing multiple versions.
Someone should make a seamless branching version of OCPMovie's discs and send it to Lucas with a note: "This is how it should be done!"

Back to LotR: the gift sets of the EE (with figurines) are still available here and there for reduced prices, probably just as much as these new discs are going to be sold for.

About fullscreen vs. widescreen:
Personally, I prefer 16:9 aspect over 2.35:1. Fullscreen on a widescreen TV, that is, ... but that's just me.

Oh come on, this is what the third release of the films? Could be worse, could be the Evil Dead series.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

Not buying them, simply because I didn't care for the theatrical cuts of FOTR or TTT. I didn't start to really like the film franchise until the EE of FOTR was released. I remember walking out of FOTR in 2001 saying "It looked like it was edited with a meat cleaver."

So I've got my EE in higher resolution (because the feature itself is split onto two discs for each film) and way more bonus material than I can shake a stick at.

Until PJ re-edits the film into one 12-hour saga for Blu-Ray, or until he gets to make The Hobbit, Middle Earth has gotten all the cash it's gonna get out of me.
I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

"In the end, atleast LOTR fans can any version in great quality on DVD, O-OT fans have to watch them as bonus material."

That's pretty much it in a nutshell.

"When Lucas does this it's a slap in the fan's face... when Jackson does it..... it's spin time."

You know, I'm not a huge Jackson fan, nor a huge LOTR fan, but even I can see the difference between these two scenarios. Obviously, you have bigger issues to deal with, and this is the best you can do, but they just aren't the same. Sorry.

"if GL was about to release Star Wars for the 3rd time, people would be pissed, IMO."

Because this isn't simply a rerelease. The details are right in front of you, both for the new LOTR as well as the multitude of SW releases listed at DavisDVD.com. Either you don't want to educate yourself on the difference, because you know full well that it hurts your argument, or you just want to troll - which is more likely, since this kind of thing has been discussed ad neauseum.

The biggest difference of all that you keep glossing over: every version of LOTR, be it theatrical or the director's "vision", is presented in the best possible form that DVD can provide. Lucas simply cannot make this claim.

If you want to bash PJ, why not head off to TF.n. They'd welcome you into their ranks with open arms. I can tell you now, you aren't going to recieve the kind of attention you so desperately crave on this site.

As you can see, PJ doesn't hold a candle to GL in terms of releasing the films, but GL doesn't hold a candle to PJ improving each subsequent rerelease. Since you obviously don't or refuse to get it, PJ consistently tries to up the ante in terms of quality and quantity in each release, giving all fans the most of what they want.

Lucas did this once on LD (The Definitive Collection), and barely on the 2004 DVDs - the rerelease of which did not include the measly bonus disc, yet didn't cost much less. Go figure . (I love how you've conveniently forgotten about that rerelease, BTW ) Let's also keep in mind that Lucas has only recently released the OT in any form on DVD. Considering his track record, what the fuck makes you think he won't repeat himself with multiple meaningless redudant or lackluster releases?

Lucas should take some notes on how PJ is releasing his films. GL just wants to give people what he wants them to see (The "Faces" set included, as a bonus, an interview of him. WooHoo! *snore*) He's stated over and over that the "original version" wouldn't be rereleased and/or didn't exist, and when he finally relents, it's of inferior quality.

Yeah, soooooooooooo many similarities. *roll eyes* If there's any "spin" going on, it's in your desparate need to pretend these scenarios share as much in common as you wish they did.

"And probably because Jackson hasn't repalced Frodo with a walking talking CGI banana in this release"

One trilogy is over 20 years old.... one isn't. Check back in a couple decades and see how many LOTR releases there are.

And the PT and OT DVD's are high quality..... the PT is a digital transfer from the original digital prints..... the OT, looks great.... it's just not the OOT. Which is gone. Sorry if it's bonus material... but, for the one billionth time. It's not your flick, so this is what you get.

Keep on spinnin', folks.
