Particular DVD brands

I think I might have bought foolishly, but has anyone else tried out Sony AccuCore DVDs for burning? They won't even work in my burner, and Nero only goes up to 2.4X speed; the discs are 16x. I've finally figured out how to burn a decent DVD, and now my main bundle won't even work. Or can I change Nero somehow to burn faster?
Something witty.

I have used those Sony AccuCore DVD's for burning home videos and they work fine for me. To change the burn speed, you should see a drop tab that displays all the different burn speeds, just select 16X.

Rikter got me started with Riteks (Rikter/Ritek...interesting.....), and I've used them ever since. Almost no bad burns (and to my knowledge, the few I had weren't the fault of the DVDs.)

Tried that; it only lets me go up to 2.4x, no matter what discs I use. But I also found out, after some searching, that the effing drive only goes up to 8x. So it's a new drive for me, or I have a hundred useless coasters.

You can still use them. You just can't burn at 16X.

Which edition of nero are you using? The newest one is full of bugs (ver. 7 unless you update it from the nero main web site). I use Sony discs all the time with nero to burn video files and (as yet) have never had a bad burn when a load of others have had problems with skipping and freezing. Look on your burners manufacturing web site if a firmware update is avalible as a 1st port of call for your drive. 2.4X is usually the max speed i get from DVD-RW/DL discs and nero should at least give you the option to burn them at your drives max speed of 8X. If worst comes to the worst, i'll buy them off you, but they are by no means coasters. Plod around afterdawn and doom9 for help.

Sony use Ritek discs to some extent or another aparently. Tuiyoyuden are supposed to be the top brand though.

Also found this a while ago on the subject, though it's older media:

1ST CLASS MEDIA
Almost flawless burns with 95-100% reliable results:
PVC = Pioneer = (-R)(-RW) ... media is no longer made
MXLRG01, MXLRG02 = Maxell = (-R)(-RW) ... be aware of fakes
TAIYOYUDEN, YUDEN, TYG01, TYG02 = Taiyo Yuden = (-R)(+R) ... be aware of fakes
MCC = Mitsubishi Chemicals = (-R)(-RW)(+R)(+RW)
TDKG02, TTG01 = TDK Corp = (-R)(-RW) ... be aware of fakes

2ND CLASS MEDIA
Decent discs, though not perfect, about 80-95% success rate:
PRODISC = Prodisc Media = (-R)(+R)
INFODISC = Infodisc Media = (+RW)
SONYD04 = Sony = (-R) ... be aware of fakes
RICOHJPN = Ritek or Ricoh = (+R)(+RW)
RITEK = Ritek = (+R)(-R)(-RW)(+RW)
OPTODISC = Optodisc = (-R)
FUJIFILM = Fuji = (-R)(+R)

At least they are not as bad as the movies (qualitywise) they once sold on DVD.

Here is an updated version of Darth Solo's list.

The "Made in Japan" Sony AccuCores I'm currently using have media ID YUDEN000T02.
However if your AccuCore package says "Made in Taiwan," chances are they're not Taiyo Yuden,
but still 1st class if they're one of the SONY media IDs.

You should definitely check for updated firmware for your drive. Older firmwares simply don't know about the newer media IDs and default to slow speed with media they don't recognize.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Brand names mean nothing. As DM points out, those Sony AccuCores might be made in Japan (Taiyo Yudens) or made in Taiwan (media ID unknown by me as I won't risk buying those). The 16x AccuCores seem to be Taiwan, and the 8x I have found to be TY Japan. But you can burn them at 12x. If you want to find Taiyo Yudens, look for Sony, Fuji, or Maxell made in Japan. Or you can by them under the TY badge online.

I swear by Taiyo Yudens and have never had one crap out on me. If you do a check of PI/PO errors (PlexTools does this for me), you can get an indication of the burn quality of your discs. Good results bear well on future ability to copy them. My friend at a duplication shop swears by Prodiscs. I tried some out and was pleased with the results. These are made in Taiwan, btw. Anyhow, check out the link provided by DM.

Can you return your unused discs? Some places will let you do that.

Another vote for Taiyo Yudens. Fuji's often go on sale, pick out the Made in Japan. And you can get unbranded spindles of TY's at rima.com for a nice price (other places too, but I know that one).

As a rule, avoid Made in Taiwan, because the dyes aren't going to last as long, even if you get a good burn. Verbatim is an exception, because they own their own plants. I believe there is/are at least one other exception(s), where a company will contract their excellent dye formula out to a Taiwanese manufacturer, but I haven't researched which discs those are. Maybe I'll research that, now... nah, too busy.

If you had chosen to stick with your old burner, it would definitelly have needed a newer firmware, and that might not have been enough.

Thankfully, burners are relatively cheap, these days. I can recommend BenQ/Phillips as excelllent burners, and most/all of them will test for PI/PO errors, like auximenies's Plextor does. (Most LiteOn's will too, but they generally make mediocre or variable-quality burns. OTOH, they are excellent readers/rippers, for those crapped out discs you might get in trade. And they're often upgradable as all hell. You can often get 'em cheap and use them just for reading). I think most Plextors test PI/PO. And I haven't looked into the other brands.

It's great to get a burner that will test PI/PO, worth looking into before you buy. (Nero's CD Speed tests PI/PO if the burner is capable, Plextools are specificlly for Plextor, KProbe for LiteOn...). Check out CD Freaks Burner forums for some impressively informed opinions on burners, discs...

And you'll find information on how to upgrade firmware, or go back to an older firmware if the new one is junk. And you'll often find about tools to get more options/performance out of your drive than the manufacturer/re-brander might have bothered/decided to give you.

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.

The "Slimtype" (LiteOn/Sony) burner in my laptop does a piss-poor job reading the thousand-or-so TY CD-Rs I've got, most of which were written by a Philips.

ROTFLOL! A triple disprove!

While I should normally feel a twinge, when I hear specifics that go against my generalities, that's freakin' awesome! (Not your situation, but the succinct perfection of the tripled contrary-example). My sympathies, by the way.

I'm not going to research it, but I seem to recall seeing some thread titles that griped about their slimlines being garbage. That would make sense, because tiny drives require top-notch engineering, and LiteOn's quality control & engineering standards are... well...

How is it with other cd's? Errors or speed?

I assume you've got the absolute latest firmware from CD Freaks. Might not help, last I checked, about a year ago, later firmwares, across all drive lines, had broken the cd reading speed (outrageous slowdown in the middle of the speedup curve).

There was a time that CD and DVD reading were two different animals, due to the different laser wavelength. (I ran into that, back then). But that would be beyond grasping-at-straws, because triple-beam is old hat...

Anyway, that reminds me of a thanks I owe you from a very old message, over in SW...

And, while I'm off the subject, I'm itching to try Linux, maybe you could help me over a couple of the rough spots, if I ever get around to it? /brazen request from out of nowhere.
