PS78: Pre-ANH Star Wars Bootleg VHS from 1978 ***"RAW" DVD RELEASED*** — Page 14

OK, raw capture #5 has been uploaded. It's missing 1 part from {part036, part356, and part361}, but I was able to repair with par2. This was probably caused by a transmission problem of some sort (I hear it's common with Usenet), but I'll still re-upload the aforementioned parts ASAP.

I don't know what the hell is going on. Now binsearch.info seems to list my two separate uploads (with different titles) as one upload and claims that there are even more incomplete parts in the most recent one.

This is ridiculous >:-O

Usenet search engine results take time to compile.  Usenet works as a series of servers, you upload to one but it takes time to get those files to all the other servers (and there's no guarantee all the servers will accept them or may only receive part of the file).  So one search engine may have incomplete for file 54, 192 and 193, and another engine have a different set.  As you are uploading all the servers have different pieces of the pie and that's why things are coming up incomplete.  Yet when you make the .nzb your server can possibly give back different incompletes or none at all.  It's rare that pieces go missing, but retention is not perfect over the whole system.  That's why PARs were invented.

Anytime there is a reset, the files will typically be considered as two separate uploads.  Usenet search engines are taught now-a-days to spot similar names files and group them.

Thanks for the information, none.

I was familiar with Usenet's architecture, but I didn't know that the Usenet Binary Search Engines work that way.

Can you recommend a good Usenet binary upload program?

I currently use:

  1. WinRar to create and split the RAR archives
  2. QuickPar to generate the PAR2 files
  3. WinSFV to generate the SFV file
  4. Camel PowerPost to generate the NZB and upload

none: If I take another crack at uploading PS78 Raw Capture #5, will the Usenet Binary Search Engines group them? If so, what can I do differently to prevent grouping?

I'm confused why would you want to reupload files which were put up just hours ago?  Search engines are trying to use common logic to group the millions of posts everyday.  They check upload name, file name, upload service, session ids, etc.  If you restart your upload application during the uploads, more then likely the grouping will be split.  PS78 v1.0e Raw Capture #5, the original and incomplete parts show up here like this: http://binsearch.info/?b=Capture5&g=alt.binaries.starwars&p=AntcuFaalb%40mailinator.com+%28AntcuFaalb%29&max=250

Seems fine to me.  On your method from the second above post, that all seems good to me.  Some programs may have the RAR and PAR in one ap (SimplyRAR for example), but it's still a two step process.  I'm not familiar with creating nzbs before the upload is finish.

I'm beating my head against the computer.

Unlike with raw capture #5, QuickPar'ing the raw capture #4 RARs consistently fails with the message: "Failed: Could not allocate output buffer". This is supposedly caused by having too much memory available, so I tried running it with 1/2 of my 4GB in use, but it was still a no-go. Similarly, I tried running it with a minimum amount of memory in use and, as expected, it was a no-go.

Maybe try decreasing the size of the par set?

Hope you are able to solve this - I'm eager for the blended/merged version release, but I realize you are laying the groundwork for future developments thru posting up these raw captures. damn these technical hiccups!!!

I downloaded raw captures #4 and #5 last night. #5 has three incomplete parts and #4 has two incomplete parts, but I was able to repair both with MultiPar, so... enjoy!

Posting to Usenet has been quite a learning experience for me.

AntcuFaalb, any chance of getting these up on MySpleen? I recently deleted my usenet account.

When are we going to get to see the finished product (combined captures)?

Right after I'm done uploading the raw captures. I'm sorry for the delay, but it's really important for me to back these up (via Usenet) because I don't have a good backup solution at home.

I would've normally released the finished product first, but I don't have enough hard drive space left to render it!

Are you referring to the raw captures? If so, then definitely, but I'd be the only seeder and they're ~50GB per capture.
