PROOF OF CONCEPT - Boba Fett Reports to Darth Vader in the Empire Strikes Back

This is a proof of concept for a scene that I’ve wanted to make a reality for quite some time. This would take the scene from the Darth Vader 2015 run, where Boba Fett informs Darth Vader of Luke Skywalker’s existence, leading to Vader realizing he has a son. I always thought this would fit perfectly at the start of the movie, as it would lead into Vader’s frantic search for Skywalker that kicks off the start.

I’ve done my best to lay out the concept for the scene here. After the opening crawl, the screen would pan down to Slave 1 exiting hyperspace, preparing to dock on the Executor. We would then cut to Boba’s conversation with Vader, which would then lead into the probe droid sequence. I’ve cut the conversation to still hide the reveal that Luke is Vader’s son, while implying that there is something to reveal.

The execution isn’t perfect, but I hope it gets my point across. I’ve used audio from Star Wars Audio Comics on Youtube, footage from the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and the “No Disintegrations” fanfilm, to try and stitch together a proof of concept. It definitely still needs work, so I hope that I can polish this over time. Please let me know what you think, or if you have any ideas!

I like this a lot. I would transition it from Vader to the Wiiliams fanfare and the Star Wars logo rolling up the screen.

I think for the musical score it should be changed up a little bit. I think some aspects of this variant Vader theme would work after Boba informs Vader:

I also like the opening voiceover and flying through hyperspace in this animated version of the Vader-Boba interaction. It really draws in your attention right away and gives the audience a quick introduction to Boba and his mission. It could work.

  • Based on my understanding, regularjoe was recommending that the scene takes place before the opening crawl. This would imply that there was a passage of time before the events of ESB take place. I agree in principle that there should be an appearance of some time passing to give the appearance that Vader was hunting Luke for an unspecified period of time. On the other hand, the original Star Wars movies never use prologues.

==> One way or another, thank you for the work and looking forward to the finished product. I am glad someone is attempting to get this nice moment into a live action scene.

I think placing it after the crawl dilutes it, the crawl already tells you that Vader is obsessively looking for Luke, putting it after the crawl just seems redundant, especially as he is learning his identity here and the crawl implies that he knows it already.

I did a pre-crawl scene in my TFA edit, I think that it is something that can work very well if one doesn’t have inflexible ideas about how a Star Wars movie has to start.

Maybe the crawl could be altered? I do want to make sure that it fits within the style of ESB.

I’ll check out that voiceover. I think new VFX would be required for Boba approaching the Executor, so that would work well for that scene.

SPOILER ALERT for those who haven’t watched it.

To be perfectly honest, at first I was wondering what the point was. Then when Boba Fett said Skywalker, and Vader jerked his head, I was like Whoa!
