I will never say that Ridley Scott can do no wrong, but I will definitely give this a chance.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

So it is no longer an alien film, then not interested sorry.

So, top talent making a new sci fi film doesn't interest you, but beating the dead horse of "Alien" with another prequal film did?

I don't care if he doesn't make any more Aliens, the first one was all I needed. But, another Sci Fi film is very appealing. Ridley definitely has the chops. Let's just hope he doesn't pull a George.

It's my understanding that it's a dark science fiction film taking place in the same universe as the Alien films, set years before the first Alien film.  It's not a "prequel" per se in that it isn't directly connected to the events of the main series.

It was implied that the origins of both the 'xenomorphs' and 'space jockey' would be revealed in the 2 prequels that were originally planned.  But with this latest 'Prometheus' proposal, there's a possibility that both these elements will remain a mystery now, if they even feature at all...

I'm interested to see if this will be the case...but if it is, then I sure hope some inferior, hack director isn't given the opportunity to follow-up this latest movie of Ridley's with the actual 'explanations' of how they came about...

If he screws it up, he'll just the latest in a long line of formerly golden movie directors gone to carp.

I'm sorry, I must be confused.  I thought this thread was about Terminator 5.

Now it looks like it WILL be set in the Alien Universe, but I think they're trying to avoid the prequel moniker, probably due to people like us (and AvP). I'm imagining that Scott is going to make a movie that takes place in the same universe, but doesn't require having seen the Alien movies. Or maybe it will ignore the sequels and just be a movie-that-takes-place-before Alien.

Consider me now a bit more intrigued about this movie. With this new information about the project that you have posted above, I think this film will be quite worth a full ticket price. I can't see myself missing even a fairly decent Scott film on the big screen. His visual story telling will be worth it alone for me. I think he is in a good state in his life right now, and wants to make this a great film and a money maker for his production partners. That sends good signals. He seemed motivated from the start to make this a good one, and I think it will be possibly another carrier milestone from what I know so far.

I hope the connections in this film and the original Alien are done with supreme tact, and also made to be only obscure nods to the supper hard core fans. Something clever and almost subliminal that a commonplace fan would need to see a few times to catch as a connection, but yet it is still something important to what is going on in the story. Please don't let it be just some set dressing or company logo (or seeing the Death Star being built out a window) type thing. To me, those type of continuity references are no longer clever, and have been done to death in the Alien series already. Just don't want the script and production design to play to the lower I.Q. folks in the theaters.

At least Predators made up for all the bad predator films after the first one.

Wait, what? My fellow cynical hates-everything forum member liked Predators?

I really wanted to like it (like Skyjedi, I hate almost everything. I am just not as vocal about it. But not ever really enjoying anything new gets old), I really, really did. So much so that I was just going to let go and ignore the small things and really appreciate it for what it was. And I did, I really did for slightly more than the first half of the film. And then it just kind of went from intriguing to predictable and bland. Then there was Adrian Brody trying to be an over the top badass (which was really ramped up toward the end of the film) and it got to me (I have a hard time not finding over the top badasses groan worthy). I left the theater feeling like the whole thing had been a really shallow experience.

I also really wanted to like Terminator Salvation, but it just wouldn't let me (the bastard).

But this, a new sci-fi film directed by Ridley Scott? The man who brought me Blade Runner and Alien; two of the best sci-fi films I have seen in my life AND he has decided not to make another dumb prequel/sequel of a formerly extremely popular film but rather something original? I need to go change my pants so I can pee myself with excitement a second time!

Alien and Blade Runner were amazing because there really wasn't anything else out there quite like them. I am not sure he'll be able to do that again, but I am sure excited about seeing him try.

I'd only watch an "Alien" prequel if it were humanless (or nearly humanless, anyway). Otherwise I have no interest in seeing it.

Ridley Scott on Prometheus:

“While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn't be more pleased to have found the singular tale I'd been searching for, and finally return to this genre that's so close to my heart.”

So it will be in the same universe as the previous films, but will deviate from it in most other ways.  Sounds better than ever if you ask me!

Ridley Scott has been mediocre for at least a decade now, but I am happy to hear that they will be using a lot of traditional special effects rather than CGI.

When it comes to our desire for sequels or prequels - we are looking for something that recreates the feelings we experience when watching the originals, but it is a fool's errand. Movies exist within a certain cultural context; Star Wars could only have been Star Wars in the summer of '77, and even had TPM been a good film, we still have not had that "peak experience" that we are looking for.

I hope Prometheus is a good film - but do not expect it to resonate with you like Alien or Aliens did (even if somehow it actually is as good as those films).

As someone who only liked Aliens as an action film and not as a continuation of the story of Alien I would hope for something better than that fun but overrated film.

Generally speaking Wong is Wrong, Wang is right.

You only say Wong when you are in Hong Kong or Guangdong which cater for the elderly and infirm so I recommend a visit.
