I know one person that would do star wars better than Lucas:

Quentin Tarantino.

no really. the man is the biggest fanboy on earth. even accounting for all the great Samuel L. Jackson jokes one could imagine (What does Jabba The Hut look like?), it'd still be light years ahead of the last two films. Everyone loves ESB, but the main reason it was so much better than the other movies was due to Lucas not being the sole visionary. Lawrence Kashdan was responsible for how tight the script was, and Irvin Kershner was a wonderful director.

Let Tarantino direct, and get another writer on board to teach GL that sometimes his word shouldn't be the final word.

I agree. Lucas isn't capable of doing it all, and has too many stupid impulses to have such absolute control over his projects.

But not Tarinteno--The last time I saw one of his movies I actually left the theater and went to play Time Crisis in the arcade.

Kevin Smith could do it. Yeah, I know he's done nothing other than raunchy comedies (save for Jersey Girl), but he's such a big fanboy that I think he could write a killer story. I dunno if he'd want to direct it, though. He already backed out of Green Hornet as a director, but will still write it. I just think he'd be good. He has enough exposure, love, and knowledge of it to pull it off.

And also, we don't know that Padme dies. It would be unlikely because she has to live long enough for Leia to have memories of her.

Lucas has changed so much of the mythos already, what's to stop him from totally screwing this bit up?
"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia'."

I think A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back are equal. The Empire Strikes Back is great until it stops. It doesn't end it stops. Return of the Jedi is needed to finish the story and Return of the Jedi is a far inferior movie.50 reason Return of the Jedi sucks

It's interesting that YOU should mention that filmthread article as ALMOST EVERY ONE of those reasons for ROTJ being a weak film are the very same kinds of inexcusable crapola that the PT films suffer from.

Except the PT films exacerbate the problem tenfold by having zero likable characters, a boring story and an over reliance on CGI.

Gungans.
Tone is inconsistent.
Look is all wrong.
Silly/racist aliens.
Repetition rather than innovation Lucas rips himself off and manages to spoil his OT surprises.
Poor and stilted unforgivably bad dialogue and horrible exposition.
Poor and extremely noticable CGI effects.
Physical and scatological humour.
Uninteresting locales.
The pointless Gunagan battlescenes.
Obiwan is neutered and cardboardy.
Music (while well composed is butchered by poor editing choices).
Threepio/Annie.
Stupid coincidences/virgin births/demystifying of The Force.
Maul, while semi-cool-looking, is a useless character who dies a pussy death.
Jake Lloyd's woeful 'acting'.
George Lucas's atrocious 'directing'.
Ben Burtt's superbad 'editing'.
All the actors look bored as fuck.
Missed opportunities.
Both the puppet and CG Yoda look worse than before.
The PT was made in such a way that the OT needed to be 'fixed' to match it.
Yippee!
What's at stake? No really what is at stake? Tell me because the film doesn't seem to want to or be able to address it.
Well staged saber fights that are still dull because, what's at stake?
People live and operate in videogame levels.
StormTroopers are all Kiwis!
Boba Fett! Oh my man what have they done to you?
Vader 90210.
Continuity Shmontinuity.

There are hundreds of others but I can't make you see when you won't open your eyes.

The Phantom Menace repeated many of the same flaws as Return of the Jedi. Still Return of the Jedi had much more responsibility ending the series then The Phantom Menace did beginning it. Attack of the Clones has none of these flaws. It reall resembles The Empire Strikes Back with a similar dark feel but with more action.

TESB is a FILM directed by a DIRECTOR.

TPM comes closer than AOTC to this ideal.

AOTC is a boring poorly edited infomercial for merchandise directed by an EXECUTIVE.

AOTC wishes it was a film.

Similarities between Attack of the Clones and The Empire Strikes Back

Both movies involve a love story between the male and female lead

Both movies flash between different charcters in different places

Both movies involve charcters being kidnapped

Both movies have a rather dark ending compared to all the other movies

Yoda rocks in both movies

Attack of the Clones is definutly closest to The Empire Strikes Back then any other movie of the series. In story and feel. The Phantom Menace is closest to Return of the Jedi in look and feel which is why both Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace are the underlings of the series.

Similarities between Attack of the Clones and The Empire Strikes Back and The Vanishing

All three movies involve a love story between the male and female lead

All three movies flash between different charcters in different places

All three movies involve charcters being kidnapped

All three movies have a rather dark ending compared to all the other movies

So what?

The difference is that in The Empire Strikes Back and The Vanishing it WORKS because the direction is top notch, the characters are fully realised and the situations are interesting and compelling because there is "something at stake".

Whereas the similarities in AOTC only serve to underline how inferior it is in comparison.

But inferiority doesn't mean that it sucks.

The Wind Waker is inferior to Ocarina of Time, but TWW doesn't suck.

Perhaps not, but AOTC sure does.

Excellent stuff Regicidal Maniac. Also, how is AOTCs dark? The Cloning? This isn't a dark video(it's not a film, it's D2V), it just has some unhappy scenes. Mostly it's a cheesy romance. I do enjoy the prequels, but it sucks that the EU has to salvage the characters. Take Luminara Unduli and her padawan Barriss Offee. Barriss becomes something of a friend to Anakin, while Luminara plays off of Obi-wan. They discuss training their padawans, and add depth to one another. By the end, Luminara becomes one of my favorite character in the prequel era. Total amount of time spent on the two in AOTC - 2 background shots, and maybe the battle. It's pretty sad when the EU has to cover for Lucas.
