Help Wanted: Original Jabba footage - HELP NEEDED

Author
Time
 (Edited)

I have been working on figuring out all the sources for the original Jabba footage with Declan Mulholland as Jabba, mainly for the sake of Jambe Davdar’s Star Wars project, but also for the sake of future reference. Jambe will be reconstructing the Jabba scene with as much footage as we can find, so it’s important to dig up all the sources, no matter how small the clip.

Here is the listing I’ve come up with so far, after combing through my source material today:

From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga [full screen]

“Solo! Come out of there, Solo! Solo!” to “I just can’t afford to make exceptions.” [most audio]

Making Magic CD-ROM [widescreen]

“Look Jabba, next time you wanna talk to me” to “Even I get boarded sometimes” (1977 footage) [audio]
“Han, my boy, I’m only doing this…” to “Fifteen, Jabba, don’t push it.” (Lucas interview 1) [no audio]
“Even I get boarded sometimes” to “I just need a little more time.” (Lucas interview 2) [no audio]

Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition Audio/Visual Press Kit Featurette [widescreen]

“Right here, Jabba” to “And why did you have to fry poor Greedo like that?” [no audio]
“…next time you wanna talk to me…” to “Han, Han! Understand…” [no audio]
“Han, my boy, there are times you disappoint me” to “Why haven’t you paid me?” [no audio]
“You think I had a choice?” to “But I’ve got a nice, easy charter” [no audio]

Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition Home Video Featurette(s) [widescreen]

“Han, my boy, there are times you disappoint me” to “Why haven’t you…” [no audio]
“…next time you wanna talk to me…” to “Han, Han! Understand…” [no audio]
“Right here, Jabba. I’ve been waiting for you.” [audio]
“Han, my boy, there are times you disappoint me” [no audio]
“Have you now?” [no audio]
“…come see me yourself” to “dropped his consignment…” [no audio]
“…twenty percent…” to “Fifteen, Jabba, don’t push it.” [no audio]
“Look Jabba, even I get boarded sometimes” [no audio]

The Magic and the Mystery (FOX TV) [widescreen]

“Solo! Come out of there, Solo! Solo!” to “Han, my boy, there are times…” [partial audio]
“You think I had a choice?” to “But I’ve got a nice…” [no audio]
“Look Jabba, even I get boarded sometimes. You think I had a choice?” [no audio]

Star Wars: An MTV Movie Special [full screen]

“… Solo!” to “Don’t send one of these twerps.” [partial audio]

The Force Returns (Sci-Fi Channel) [mostly widescreen]

“Han, my boy, there are times…” to “And why did you have to fry poor Greedo like that…” [no audio]
“Han, my boy, there are times…” to “…after all we’ve been…” [full screen, no audio]
“You think I had a choice?” [no audio]
“…a choice? But…” [no audio]
“Han, my boy, there are times…” [no audio]

Star Wars Special Edition 1997/2004 [widescreen]

(complete scene) [partial audio and video]

Anything you can add to this list would be very helpful.

And to help place the footage, here is the complete scene dialogue (edited to match the actual footage):

INT. DOCKING BAY 94 - DAY

Jabba the Hutt and a half dozen grisly pirates and aliens stand in the middle of the docking bay. Jabba is the grossest of the slavering hulks and his scarred face is a grim testimonial to his prowess as a vicious killer.

JABBA
Solo! Come out of there, Solo! Solo!

A voice from directly behind the pirates startles them and they turn around to see Han Solo and the giant Wookiee Chewbacca standing behind them.

HAN
Right here, Jabba. I've been waiting for you.

JABBA
Have you now?

HAN
You didn't think I was gonna run, did you?

JABBA
(Fatherly-smooth)
Han, my boy, there are times you disappoint me... why haven't you paid me? And why did you have to fry poor Greedo like that... after all we've been through together.

HAN
Look Jabba, next time you wanna talk to me come see me yourself. Don't send one of these twerps.

JABBA
Han, Han! Understand, I just can't afford to make exceptions. Where would I be if every pilot who smuggled for me dropped his consignment at the first sign of an Imperial starship? It's not good business.

HAN
Look Jabba, even I get boarded sometimes. You think I had a choice? But I've got a nice, easy charter now. I'll pay you back, plus a little extra. I just need a little more time.

JABBA
Han, my boy, I'm only doing this because you're the best and I need you. So, for an extra, say... twenty percent...

HAN
Fifteen, Jabba, don't push it.

JABBA
Okay, fifteen percent. But if you fail me again, I'll put a price on your head so bog you won't be able to go near a civilized system.

HAN
Jabba, you're a wonderful human being.

JABBA
(To his men)
Come on!

Skot,

Thanks for compiling this for me, I didn't realise you were beaving away on this. I have actually begun to edit the footage together, though I am waitingo n the arrive of 'Making Magic' for some of the missing pieces.

Ocpmovie did a tremendous job of the original Jabba scene for Deleted Magic. Unless you try to do this yourself you won't quite appreciate how much work he must have put into it. Just trying to make the 4:3 widescreen by using the 2004 DVD footage is a huge job in itself.

The last part of the scene doesn't exist anywhere (publicly available anyway) with Mr Mullholand. Maybe one day LFL will release it.

I don't currently have copies of:

- Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition Home Video Featurette(s) (unless this is one on 'Return of the Ewok')
- The Force Returns (Sci-Fi Channel)

If any one can hook me up with copies I would really appreciate it.

Not sure about the SE featurettes, but I do have The Force Returns. My tape was the source for OCP's "Special Edition Hype" disc, which also has the special. You're welcome to borrow my VHS if you want, but there might be someone around with a better copy and I won't be able to get to the tape until early May.

Though if you do need it, I will gladly loan it to you when I can get to it.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

I think the home video featurette was on Babyhum's A/V presskit. I also have OCP Movie's Special Edition Hype, with the the Force Returns. (As RB said, its a copy of his VHS copy.) I can send these to you, JD if you need them.

I can't even think of anywhere where more Declan-Jabba scenes would be. I didn't even know about a lot of these. Good job Skot!

Not that they are as scattered and sundry, but a thread like this for the other lost scenes would be cool. Well, actually, if you really get into, it could be actually a pretty big thread.

Thanks for the offer of VHS copies but I really don't have any facility to convert them at present. As soon as I have received and integrated the footage from 'Making Magic' I will let you know what I am still missing.

Thanks

I guess it is good that we have all of Han's dialogue. We might have to mix out all of the Jabba walking noise.

Indeed; I remember when he was working on that. I think I provided him part of the Jabba footage captured from Making Magic, but he may have used a better source that came up after mine. I was blown away by his overlay of the original footage on top of the widescreen footage to make the whole scene widescreen.

Sluggo and his friend Brad, to their credit, did a widescreen version of the compiled Jabba footage as well some time earlier. It was also very good, but lacking a few pieces that were found later.

The last part of the scene doesn't exist anywhere (publicly available anyway) with Mr Mullholand. Maybe one day LFL will release it.
Yeah, that's a shame. You'll have to find a way around it without incorporating the digital Jabba, I imagine.

I don't currently have copies of:

- Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition Home Video Featurette(s) (unless this is one on 'Return of the Ewok')
- The Force Returns (Sci-Fi Channel)

If any one can hook me up with copies I would really appreciate it.
The Force Returns is on ocpmovie's Special Edition Hype DVD, and is probably the best source for it. The Home Video Featurette is on Return of the Ewok, and appears to be the same 30 minute one that's on babyhum's Press Kit DVD. For best quality, though, you'll want to use babyhum's DVD as the source for that.

The Special Edition featurettes are confusing (maybe somebody could clarify if I'm wrong here?). First, there is the 7:44 featurette that was included with the Audio/Visual Press Kit. Then there is the 30 minute one that I think was taken from the 1997 Trilogy SE laserdisc set. Lastly, I believe the latter was also available in separate pieces on the 1997 Trilogy SE limited edition videotape box set, only with less total footage than the laserdisc version. In any case, babyhum's DVD has both the 7:44 featurette (with and without text) and the 30 minute one in good quality. Maybe babyhum can hook you up directly for the project if you don't have a copy.

Anybody in the UK got ocpmovie's Special Edition Hype they can send to Jambe?

I'm not in the UK, but if I can still send Jambe Special Edition Hype. Its the least I can do to help after the great job he did on Making Empire and Returning to Jedi.

I'm in the UK and I've got Special Edition Hype. I've been seeding the torrent on Myspleen for a while, as well. If someone sends me the address, I'll take care of it.

I thought Deleted Magic had as much of the original Jabba as was available, all in widescreen. Is there anything that he missed. I also have a dvd of the Special Edition bonus features. As I mentioned elsewhere, the main feature looks laserdisc sourced and is one entire video rather than split into segments like on the vhs tapes.

Deleted Magic does indeed show all that is available as far as we know. But I am reconstructing it for my 'Star Wars Begins' project. Firstly because I promised OCP that I wouldn't rip anything from his doco and secondly because we may be able to get the footage from better quality sources this time around. In fact Fanfiltrations "Making Magic" already offers a better quality source than the one used for 'DM'.

Also, you never know what might just turn up!

No further progress from me lately, I'm afraid... been out of the loop for a while due to lack of internet access. What's above is pretty complete, I think.

Do you have all the sources now for all the clips? And have you found any sources that aren't on my list above? I found one that came from CNN apparently here while watching your clip on YouTube, but I'm pretty sure it just used the same press kit footage over again.

I have an old video which has deleted scenes from ANH, It's been so long since I've watched it that I don't know what was all on it - it could have had Jabba footage, it definately had treadmill and cantina... I will look this week when I'm back at my folk's place. The tape also has workprint footage from the Jedi special edition's new ending.

BTW - you're not Skot Kirkwood who rand the Current 93 site are you..?

Who made the edit that can be found on "Return of the Ewok and other little people"?

"The wish power are together with you!"
Author

There already is a complete restoration of the original Jabba scene on YouTube, but the last part is taken from the credits at the end of a show, using it as a background. It's been formated to be in widescreen. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing.

Do we know who made it?

Jambe, who else made that one?

Return of the Ewok was done by OCPmovie.

OCPmovie updated his cut of the Jabba scene edit in the 'Deleted Magic : Revisited' ( http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-Deleted-Magic/topic/1284/ ) with upgraded (twixor interpolated frames) footage, in the last 2 months.  There's one scene he wasn't able to get a better quality version of which Jambe might have used for his cut of the same scene.  The extended clip is from the credits of the Accesss Hollywood program from around the release of the SE, a bit of dialog.

Does anyone have the original script dialogue of the Han/Greedo scene, before it was rejigged in the final cut to compensate for the loss of the Jabba scene?  I used to have it, but can't seem to find it anywhere now ...

Author
Time

No, that's the revised dialogue.  (You can tell because Han says "Even I get boarded sometimes.  Do you think I had a choice?" which was lifted from the Jabba scene in post-production.)
