Info Wanted: Original Red Dwarf?

"Original" was used to denote that series 1-3 were the original versions and not the poorly-conceived and awful "remastered" editions from 1999.

The series are basically uncut and as they were. McDonald's forced them to remove the syllable "Mc" from Kryten, but pretty good overall.

Okay.... does that mean that the original non-fucked-with versions are out on DVD? I was under the impression that the versions released on DVD were the "Special Edition" type versions, which is what kept me from buying them... man I think I need to go research this some more.
For as much as some people claim to hate what Star Wars has become, they sure seem incapable of shutting up about it.

The ones on DVD are the originals. The "remastered" versions were horrible and long forgotten.

Just to add to that:

Season 7 features a newly remastered version of one episode "Tikka to Ride" with apparently new CGI (I haven't seen this one yet so can't comment).

As for the remastered versions of seasons 1-3 - if you really MUST see them, - they appear on DVD in the Czech Republic market - here's Season 3, Season 2, and Season 1.

If you can read Czech... Oh, and you can buy them here.

At least for the rest of the us, the originals were chosen to be preserved to DVD and we don't have to wait around for someone to edit them back to how we remember them Unless someone wants to edit that Mc back into Kryten
where have i been all this time ?

That's strange; my family only has the Series One DVD (R4) so far and it is the remastered version.

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

Been doing a little research...

I remember when the VHS tapes were reissued (I had seasons 1-6, i think, of the original releases) and I was told that they were the remastered episodes. Having seen a few of these episodes on a rare occasion when the local PBS station decided to grace us with them, I remembered not being verY impressed, and actually kind of dissapointed, so I passed at the time. Then the DVDs were released and I had heard rumors that they were also the remastered versions. So as I said before, I shied away once again.

However, doIng a little searching on Amazon.com, I seem to have been given a bit of hope:

Viola!

Namely, the following quote in the third Spotlight Review:

First of all, these episodes are the original ones shown on the BBC, not the "Re-mastered" ones that are available on VHS.
For as much as some people claim to hate what Star Wars has become, they sure seem incapable of shutting up about it.

Hmmm, that's odd. According to the Red Dwarf site and this Australian store, the R4 DVDs feature the "un-remastered" episodes. As far as I can tell, only the Czech market features the re-mastered episodes. The UK and US DVDs are DEFINITELY "un-remastered".

As an aside, I have the Red Dwarf Tongue Tied VHS video (PAL format) which I'll get round to transferring to DVD later on this year (2006) if anyone is interested...

I have just won this which I bid for after reading this thread about the re-mastered series 1 to 3.

I plan to put the re-mastered versions onto DVD and then do a split screen comparison to see what the differences are compared to the DVDs.

Apparently, the Holland/Belgium release of Series 1 earlier last year was also the remastered version.

I picked up my ebay items and have checked out the very first remastered episode on VHS, side by side with the original version on the DVD.

I hate the "filmized" look of the remastered version but do not have too much of a problem with many of the other changes. The CGI ship looks OK and Holly looks much better in most shots.

I can see why the newer version pissed off the true fans but the casual viewer would not really notice, apart from that horrid "filmized" look to the whole thing.

Once series 1 to 3 are out in Holland on DVD, I will be buying all 3 just to get the remastered versions in DVD quality
