Okay, what did we LIKE about the Special Editions?

Author
Time
Just thought I'd throw this out there...

While we all have issues with the Special Editions, I think its fair to say that there are some additions that we actually like. I'm very picky so when I thought about it, I could think of three (actually four) additions (one for each movie) that I really liked. I wanted to know what additions people here actually liked.

1. The new shot of the Millenium Falcon approaching Yavin in A New Hope. Very dynamic.

2. The extended shot of Slave 1 tracking the Millenium Falcon and the additional shots during the approach to Cloud City in Empire.

3. The Bantha herd in ROTJ

I like the landspeeder shot of entering Mos Eisley better. NOT the whole entry, just that shot. (The entry sucks horribly)

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

well, besides the clean-up and audio. That's a given. I'm talking about new FX and scenes, not the technical restoration.

I could go into plenty that I hated, but let's see if there are any positives first.

I actually like the scream.

I didn't at first, but now it just seems like it helps that scene.

I still DESPISE the SEs with all my fandom might!

You "liked" the scream, but you HATE the SE's with all your fandom might?

Something doesn't compute here. Please explain.

In my opinion, the scream turned Luke from a hero to a chump.

I must admit I didn't like many of the obvious changes.

But I was happy with the minor changes:

The 'push in' on the establishing shot of the Sandcrawler.
The tilt down from the colourful sky as R2 enters the canyon.
Correcting the colour of the sky as Luke and C3P0 talk about R2 missing.

Oh, and some of the Death Star battle stuff wasn't bad.

to tell you the truth i have tons of things i loved about the SE's but they are all very minor minor things... that didnt do a lot to the plot...

such as:

the snowspeeders not being translucent anymore.

the old scene with Biggs at the ending of new hope was an absolutly amazing idea and is now one of my favorite scenes in the SE's

i liked how they cleaned up the smudge under the landspeed in ANH

even the death star scene battle in ANH was much more exciting

the new entrance into cloud city wasnt that bad but as for making all the walkin through cloud city shots have some sort of ship fly by the windows was cheesy and should have been left that plain white... sorda that uneasy feeling

last one i can think of is the bantha heard at the beginning of ROTJ oh ya and the sandcrawler shots in ANH

as for ROTJ... that SE had nothing good in it except for the bantha thing mentioned above... Lucas completely butchered that SE beyond belief!

The Biggs scene was good, but I would've rather had the earlier one.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I agree Gundarkhunter, while as a fan, I was happy to see the Biggs scene, it really doesn't make sense to have it unless you put the other one from the beginning of the film there as well.

I can totally understand why they cut the scenes. After all, ANH only happens over the course of a few days at the most. Are we to believe the Biggs left Tatooine--->jumped ship from the Rand Ecliptic--->went to Bestine--->met his friend's "friend"--->who got them in touch with the Rebellion--->made it in--->was vetted and cleared by the Rebels--->then assigned to Red Squadron on Yavin IV?

All within the same time period that Luke gets R2-D2 and C-3PO and has his own adventure on the Death Star?

Also, why did they clip Red Leader's lines about meeting Luke's father when he was a boy?

hmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

That would have given Luke an outlet to find out too much about his father. How could you have Red Leader say that and not spend the next half hour with Luke trying to find out more by grilling the guy? Plus, it would have locked Lucas to a plotline that he wasn't even 100% positive about at the time.

Good points, Bossk.

I just wish the scene had been longer, I think Red Leader is way cool.

Another problem I have with the Biggs scene as it is now, is trying to figure out why Biggs didn't see Luke at the briefing session? Surely he was there, wasn't he?

Yeah Hot Rod, I think Red Leader is way cool! His helmet had the best design and I love his death scene.

Surprisingly, other than Gold Leader (Angus McGinnis), I didn't recognize any of the other Rebel pilots from Death Star battle in the scene. Even "Wedge" is not played by Denis Lawson, though Lawson did dub over his voice ("That's impossible, even for a computer!")

At the end of the movie, we see three other Rebel pilots greet Luke when he gets back. I think one might be Denis Lawson, (though if he is, he's carrying the wrong helmet)

Any theories as to who was flying the Y-Wing that escaped the Death Star with Luke, Wedge and the Falcon?

3. The Bantha herd in ROTJ

01- Extended arrival of the Millennium Falcon on Cloud City with CG Falcon and Cloud Car escorts set against a CG Cloud City.

02- All the extra windows and things inside Cloud City. Lucas was trying to open things up so that we can see the scope of the city and I think he delivered the goods here.

03- The extended arrival in Mos Eisley in ANH, with the CGI speeder and Mos Eisley "set". No it isn't perfect (I could take or leave the droid punching the other droid to the ground), but it's better than it was in the original version, IMHO.

04- The explosions of Alderaan and the two Death Stars. I don't know what a planet or space station of that size would look like if they ever blew up, but I find the newer explosions to be much more believable.

05- The Falcon lifting off from the Mos Eisley hangar in ANH. It's definitely a good thing to actually see it take off instead of just seeing this tiny speck (representing the Falcon) taking off in the distant background while a stormtrooper watches.

06- The space dogfight in ANH with all those extra flourishes Lucas added were great too.

Basically, in my opinion there's no shortage of good stuff in the Special Editions. The number of things I liked is much higher than the stuff I disliked (which most of you probably don't like either).

I'll be honest I like just about everything added and enhanced in the SE. I think the small additions(robot smack down) are the kind
of things Lucas would have put in the movie the first time given the technology, money and time. These do not bother me because they
don't change any of the plot points or character's traits, hence they are trivial in the grand scheme of the trilogy. However I do take
issue with the Han & Greedo scene. Aside from the fact that it looks awful when Han 'moves' his head to miss the blaster shot I hate
what it does to change his character. After leaving the Imperial Academy and becoming a smuggler Han became a man who did
whatever he needed to get by. From gambling in order to aquire a ship(the Falcon in a Sabaac game) to shooting a bounty hunter about
to take him away to almost certain execution at the hands of Jabba, Han is a survivor first and foremost. Even in our country in present day
if someone threatens you with a firearm and you respond with force and kill them it is considered self defense, even if they never fired their
weapon. In other words sometimes firing first is sometimes justified, so I have never understood Lucas's discomfort with this scene. Next
thing you know there will be a 'Special Edition of Raiders of the Lost Ark' and Indy won't shoot the swordsman.

I liked the Biggs scene but it made only sense for those who new that there were more Biggs scenes from the beginning still waiting for their release. But I still have one question in mind about this scene: When GL wanted to give the SEs a modern look why didn't he use CGI to remove Biggs horrible 70s mustache? :-)

Back to serious: I liked the new look of Bespin. I liked the Banthas. Some more things but they are all minor.

WHAT I REALLY LIKED ABOUT THE SE: To see the films on the big screen.

The Biggs scene was cool because it existed from when the film was originally shot. I've never had a problem with splicing back in scenes that were originally shot for a movie but cut out for the sake of time. I love that about special edition or director's cuts of movies. But when you create whole new scenes for a movie. That's a whole other story.

I like everything exept the Han and Greedo change. But I heard they are going to restore this so if they do I like everything about the Special Editions.

There is still that rumor. However, if they live by what Jim Ward told Bill Hunt of thedigitalbits.com, then it's going to be the actual 1997 SE. But who's to say for sure, right?

The fixed Lightsabers proved that yes there is a good chance there will be slight differences. Simliar to the Indiana Jones DVDs. It is being digitally cleaned by the same company so they might put in slight changes. The changes to Indiana Jones weren't announced until a month before they came out.

Oh!!

and on topic!!

I only really can't stand what they did in Empire with Vader landing on his Star Destroyer. It destroyed the whole timing and pace of Lukes rescue!
Oh yeah, and the Greedo thing!

Apart from that . I can't wait for the DVD!!!

14 slight changes were made on the orginal trilogy DVD. They include deleting the glass that was predecting Harrison Ford from the snake. My guess we will get a couple slight changes like that on the 2004 DVD.
