OUT Audio: Pablo Speaks

Pablo Hidalgo talks about the Audio on the new DVDs at the SDCC Fan Club breakfast
"If you do pick up these singles, and listen to the bonus discs, do yourself a favor and listen to the French and Spanish language tracks. These are the old original foreign version dubs and there's some interesting sound effects that appear in those versions that don't appear in the English versions, so it's really interesting to listen to the different versions.

"[In the English version], specifically, you won't hear the stormtrooper 'close the blast doors!' and you won't hear C-3PO say 'the tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in seven locations, a power loss at one of the terminals will allow the ship to leave.' I got a chance to listen to these, and realized, that's the version I heard on VHS all these years! And yes, you will hear Luke say to Artoo 'you were lucky you don't taste so good,' as opposed to 'you were lucky to get out of there.' So, it's like an old friend coming home."

I guarantee that this is just the 2.0 stereo track taken from the Laserdisk, just like everything else about the OOT release is, and not the "original theatrical" stereo version.

The more I hear about these DVDs, the bigger the punchline has GOT to be. LOL!

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Yeah well.......you can hear all that on the '93 and '95 LD versions and on the '95 VHS version too. LOL!

Big fat hairy deal.

Ah, but we want to hear "close the blast doors" and 3PO's tractor beam line. At least I do.

You know, if my Faces set was in widescreen, I might as well just transfer those tapes to DVD, and then I'd be all set without the expense of having to buy this identical product!

Was there ever an audio track that had the "close the blast doors" line, C-3PO's "tractor beam" line, and the "lucky you don't taste so good" line all combined? That's what I'd prefer.

No, because the first two are in ANH and the last one in TESB!

However, the original mono mix for ANH had both C-3PO's "tractor beam" line and the "close the blast doors" line.

Heh. Wow, my mind sure checked out there.

Anyways, is the original mono mix for Star Wars considered the best audio track?

Are there supposed to be links on that site that allow you to play a sound clip from the mix versions?

The mono mix and the 1997 and 2004 (yuck) mixes.

Neil

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

Or you could just head over to the preservation forum and ask someone to send you a Faces rip. As I've said before, If I had my LD rips with me and I had access to a DVD burner, I would send copies to you and anybody else who wanted them, but until then there are plenty of people who will help you out at no charge.

I'm again considering doing that. That's actually what brought me here in the first place, about nine months before I joined the forums. I almost got a set from Rikter, but then I backed out at the last second without following up for reasons I can't explain myself. I have no idea. Sorry about that, Rikter. But then again, I might just wait for the X0 project.

Back in the day, George said that it was the definitive track. It wasn't the original track. It was the last of the theatrical 3, I guess we can call them. So it had been tweaked a lot past its previous incarnations. I've listened to some clips, and a lot of it sounds very difference since it's not what I was raised on. Beru's voice is different, as is the Death Star time to firing range voice. As definitive as it was supposed to be, though, I guess George was afraid to release non-stereo mixes to the consumer market in the modern age since, aside from the lines you mentioned, most of the mono-specific stuff hasn't been reused since, as far as I know.

Yes but there is a known problem with it working OK on Mac and Linux computers. Using Windows, it is OK.

The author knows of the issue so there may be a fix coming out sometime
