The only reason would be if they were specifically showing it on film, which seems unlikely.

Considering it’s a very limited roadshow in only select venues, I don’t think it’s unlikely at all. I think it’s more than likely in fact.

Perhaps the projectionist can be bribed to run an alternate print? 😉

Where were you in '77?

It would be cool to go since I grew up on 97 SE trilogy. I remember when my mom finally bought the 2004 DVD’s and it even confused the hell out of a young one. I asked her always “why is darth Vaders lightsaber pink?” or “where is Anakins ghost? Who’s that 20 year old?”. I eventually in a confused and frustrated state told my mother “I don’t know why but these DVD’s suck, where are the VHS’s?”.

But this was the ultimate travesty. I was gonna introduce my 8 year old little cousins to the original unaltered Star Wars trilogy on Vacation. One of them wasn’t allowed to stay up late on the second and third nights for ESB and ROTJ. The cousin who could stay up just ate it up. His favorite was ESB (good taste). Once we came home from Vacation the cousins family as requested by me, purchased the complete saga on blu Ray, THEN I burned a despecialized set for them free of charge. He now is in love with Star Wars and loves talking with me about it and it was such a great experience.

The other cousin not so much… his family returned and their parents blindly pulled out their handy dandy 2004 DVDs for the whole family and within a couple days that cousin of mine thought Jedi Rocks was the greatest thing that Star Wars did for Humanity. I failed that cousin of mine.

Now him and my cousin who saw despecialized debate the changes. I took no mercy nor hesitance to debate a 8 year old about such important matters.

Man, these are the experiences that make the SE’s really sting the soul lol.

I don’t think the 97 SE is awful, as while it does have some bad CGI additions, the colours are all fine, and at least there’s no Hayden.

Not enough people read the EU.

We had screenings in Germany in 2014.
From my impression it was the 2011 versions.
Also there were no prints just DCPs. But it seemed the DCPs were sourced form the 1997SE prints (grain, damages, etc) with the added alterations for 2011.

I guess no one here went to the marathon leading up to TFA last December to see which versions were being run?

My friend (who’s a projectionist) did. He says the DCP’s are sourced from the 2011 Blu’s, except for TPM, which was a 2D folddown of the 3D version. He also said they look like garbage, and this guy is ALL ABOUT “director’s intent”.

Every time a Drafthouse answers “what version” on Twitter, they say specifically “1997”. Knowing how crazy they are, I’m sure they got film prints, which intrigues me.

Better the 97 version on film than what is essentially an HDTV scan I say. Looks like this is only in america though.

I wonder if there will be viewers who have only seen the home versions of the ‘Special Editions’ from 2004 onwards who will decide to check these movies out on the big screen for the first time? - if so, not only are they gonna wonder who the ‘old dude forceghost’ is at the end of 1997’s ROTJ:SE…but they’re gonna get a bit of a shock when they see how Jabba originally looked!

For what its worth, Alamo actually showed the 2011 versions during the marathon leading up to TFA release.

What differences exist in the 3D release?

Beats me, this is what he insists on saying when I ask him.

But did they claim they would be the 1997 versions beforehand?

It’d be easier to have 6 DCP’s than to switch from digital to film to back to digital. It makes sense they would show 2011 in a full saga marathon.

Nope, I’m just throwing out facts.

I’ve not actually seen it, but I think they changed the Fox logo to the new, late 2000s version. Other than that, not a clue.

Oranges are typically the color orange.

See, I can do it too, but it’s kind of pointless if it doesn’t relate to the topic.

The only thing that seems odd to me is that they have 7 showings on the same day, across the country. Do they actually have 7 35mm prints?

Well, they have a DC and NY showing on the same day, and given that the run-time per film is about 2 hours …

you probably weren’t completely serious, but i considered your point 😃

Earlier in the thread, it was questioned whether or not the 2011 versions were used during Alamo’s marathon. I was responding to that. Although I could’ve worded my post a little better.

Guys… This is the Alamo. I know the Alamo. They’re going to be using film.

They’ve made a point of using film at every screening of theirs I’ve ever gone to. They’ve gotten absolutely pristine film prints of Jaws and Close Encounters.

It’s gonna be a 1997 SE print set, I know it.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

So the Alamo has removed any mention of the roadshow on their website. I emailed my local Alamo, and they said that they might’ve removed the announcement because there was confusion on whether or not the movies would be shown in Alamo theater or in other, bigger venues.

i hope that is the reason, and not any sinister LucasFilmness.

Perhaps the response was so much larger than they expected that they are rethinking the way they are handling this?
