EDIT: Or do they simply have negatives, which may or may not be okay? I don't know.

I would think that someone who had a large collection of 35mm films would not advertise the fact. However, the FBI probably has better things to do nowadays that confiscate reels of illegally-owned 35mm movies, especially if somebody owns only one or two films.

Owning a 35mm negative would definitely not be OK, since there are so few of them, and there would be no other way to get them than to steal them, since only the owners of the film would have a legitimate reason to be in possession of a negative. I'd say that whoever owns the copyright to a particular film would consider that to be even a more serious offense than owning a 35mm print, since negatives are so precious and irreplaceable.

And yes, movie theaters rent movie prints, then are supposed to return them when they're finished with them.

"However, and this may be strange yet bizarre idea, nothing is to stop people from taking their projectors and showing it to say private party I think, not a con. In fact I think we should go for a national screening day, a con of any sort would raise the hackles of LFL. Unless we do something that is completely unannouned and spontaneous and unadvertisd during the middle of an existing con like Dragon Con."

Agreed.

"A 35mm print is a different deal- since 35mm prints have never been sold by LFL, they are all still the property of LFL and if you own one- it's stolen, so you're breaking the law simply by possessing it."

Perhaps a good reaason why Lucas has such a hard-on for digital distribution.

"And yes, movie theaters rent movie prints, then are supposed to return them when they're finished with them."

Same goes for the big cardboard displays. LFL expects those back as well (as do other studios.)

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Believe me, even though they're supposed to be returned, most of them go home with the theater managers.

I bet the theatre managers' wives aren't too happy. ^_~

You know, it would be great to have a little OOTCon next year for the anniversary. Not hiring out a theatre, etc., etc. but just a little get-together of UK ot.com-ers to toast the health of SW '77 and maybe watch the OOT. You know, nothing too fancy. Depending on numbers, you could do it in somebody's lounge. You could still call it OOTCon!

That would great to have a OOTcon for the 30th Anni watching the OOT with a few drinks and that, it would remind me of those trilogy parties I had when I was younger, though I dont know how pleased my wife would be about holding it at my place though unfortunately, though I would like to do something if anyone is interested for the 30th Anniversary.

It would be a great way to mark the event. You're pretty close to the London area, aren't you Mr. B?

Yes I live in West London its about 20-25 mins at most on the tube from the Centre of London, It would be very nice to mark the 30th Anniversary somehow with the members of OT.com by doing something like this or something else.
