Twice in the past year I've overheard a person in the video aisles of a local store muttering under their breath about the lack of new VHS titles. One of these people was standing right across from a stack of those $40 DVD players!

silly silly people!! lol just get a DVD player already it won't bite. I think that some of these people are perhaps afraid of new technology. For instance, my grandma is still afraid of using a computer. She refuses to allow us to get one for her. We got her an e-mail station last Christmas but she barely uses it. Not only that, but I've heard stories about people who are ten years youngerr than my dad having a fear of learning about computers, e-mail and the internet. I think the DVD may fall into that category.

That's okay. So long as the OOT is on VHS the format will at least be un-dead.

Does that reasoning go for LD as well?

As long as you have that avatar, or one of us out here has a copy of the OOT that weighs ten pounds and a machine to play it on, then LD is something more viable than shadows and dust.

I listened to part of the commentary on the new 3-disc Gladiator today; that's one too-new movie I wish I could own on LD.

Well that just tears it!! LFL is going to force me to make a bootleg Episode 3 VHS (with custom cover) to match the rest of the set. *furiously shaking fist at George*

Yeah, I don't buy VHS anymore, but it is pretty shoddy to not go ahead and complete the set, even if it's just in limited release.

I stopped buying VHS years before I got my DVD player...I was just waiting until I could afford one.

Um... two questions... why would you want Gladiator on LD when you can get the better DVD version? And why are people so upset about ROTS not coming out on VHS? It's dead, the formats over... would you really watch it anyway if you have the DVD? Just my two cents.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

As far as I'm concerned, VHS is dead, except for recording off TV. But now we've got TIVO and DVD-Rs, so that'll soon be a thing of the past as well.

And how is that Gladiator 3-Disc Darth Enzo? I have the original release; is all they did re-insert the cut scenes?

I wouldn't watch it. I don't care to buy it. But considering that all the others have been on VHS, and the format isn't as dead as disco or vinyl or 8-tracks or dinosaurs, that it wouldn't have killed them to make a VHS release for this last Star Wars movie. I betcha there's a PSP release for it...

bad_karma24: For some reason Gladiator seems like a movie I would have bought on LD if it had come out a few years earlier. I know and love the fact that well-mastered modern DVDs beat the pants off LD (at least in video quality), but there's a different tactile experience with the 12" media that you just don't get with DVD. The discs feel simultaneously substantial and delicate, and a gatefold jacket allows plenty of room for nice big artwork.

Commander Courage, I only listened to the commentary today while I was doing work around the house so I can't say too much yet. I do know that most, if not all, of the cut scenes from the original DVD were reinstated and there were extensions to existing scenes, notably in some battle sequences. The rest of the package seems really nice, too. There's not much overlap in the supplements with the old 2-disc set, so I'm keeping both. There's plenty of informative reviews out there, but I don't give out free links after 2 am so you gotta find 'em yourself.

VHS is dead as a new-release format, but people will still be using them to tape TV shows for many more years. Unless companies just stop making new VCR's, I can't imagine John Q. Public totally embracing DVD recorders for awhile. Bear in mind that useless Pan & Scan Edition DVD's are still coming out, which should be obsolete by now-- apparently there are still enough people who "prefer" a hacked-up picture to warrant them. I'd rather see those go before VHS as a whole.

A lot of people still have a LOT of VHS-- a lot of which probably will never make its way to DVD. Should we all spend the rest of our lives converting all of our tapes to DVD (home movies, episodes of Herman's Head, vintage German porn, whatever), until the next new video format comes along and forces the repurchasing of all the obsolete DVD's we'll someday own? And not putting out a Sith VHS when surely millions of people own all the SW flicks on VHS is just dumb. Esp. considering that:

"Although Fox is going DVD only on the latest Star Wars release, the studio is still sticking to VHS for Sept. 27 release Robots and Mr. & Mrs. Smith."

If you're going to pronounce new retail VHS DOA, can't you at least wait until *after* the release of the final movie of one of the most popular and lasting film series of all time? Is there going to be a bigger market for Mr. & Mrs. Smith than Revenge of the Sith? (and yes, that rhymed)
We don't have enough road to get up to 88.

That's exactly what I'm saying. I can see them not doing a VHS release for something that's not too popular. But Revenge of the Sith is going to fly off the shelves. Why not release it as widely as possible? I mean, they've never seemed to have a problem milking the cash cow before. Why start now?

VHS is at least dying a natural death so far. LD was conked on the head and pushed over a cliff in the states. "Faster DVD! Kill! Kill!" Fox and/or Lucasfilm have made some wacky decisions before. Like releasing Phantom Menace on LD in Japan only.

VHS is going to turn into what vinyl long play discs have become, an underground collector thing. There are still stores that sell LPs and some artists still release their albums in a limited LP pressing, for those who (correctly) belive they sound better than CDs.

It's a sad day for the VHS market, if anyone told me only 5 years ago that DVDs would replace VHS I would have laughed at them...
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

As someone else said, VHS is dying fast as a new release format. Digital video recording is going a lot of different directions, but once the average consumer understands their options as far as DVRs and recordable media, it's over. A foul screen pan & scat (sic) DVD is more useless than a VHS however. Please stop making them. Vinyl rules, I really prefer analog when it comes to music and I like mixing and scratching with records. Not to mention a lot of re-releases of older albums are mastered wrong nowadays.

Back to the original topic... I don't own any of the PT on VHS, and I don't want them. But I would assume that there a lot of people out there with 5 Star Wars Tapes on their shelf who would buy ROTS just to complete the set, even if they never watched it. Why would LF not want people buying 2 formats on the first day? Heck, put it out on Super 8, VCD, beta max, cave drawings, etc... We're nerds! We'll buy them!

Exactly. Collectors will buy any format, dead or not. Why do you think old vinyl albums cost so much? There is still a good market for VHS. I'm not of that market, but I still think it's a bad decision not to put Ep III on VHS. Is it going to hurt Fox or LFL any? Pfft. Not really. But it's still worth it.

You know, come to think of it, not only will ROTS not be on VHS to complete the set, Lucas' newest vision of the OT won't be on VHS either. So, the newest versions of the SW films on VHS will be incomplete. Interesting. I'm guessing that the incomplete set will eventually be prized by collectors for this reason.
