The Curse of the Blue Lightsaber

It has come to my attention though much nerdy discussion that when one wields a blue lightsaber blade he is doomed to failure. Only a green blade will get the job done, and even that doesn't guarantee you'll walk away without a scratch.

TPM: Maul (red) kills Qui-Gon (green) and defeats Obi-Wan (blue), but Obi-Wan kill's Maul with Qui-Gon's saber.
AotC: Dooku (red) defeats Obi-Wan (blue), but Anakin (green) hold his own until Dooku chops it away leaving him only with Obi-Wan's and quickly defeated. Yoda (green) fights Dooku to a draw.
ANH: Vader (red) kills Obi-Wan (blue).
ESB: Vader (red) defeats Luke (blue).
RotJ: Luke (green) defeats Vader (red). It is only when Lukes tosses away his blade that he is harmed by Palpatine.

I'm sure RotS will shatter all this (throwing Mace's purple saber into the mix, and we all know how Obi-Wan and Anakin's the blue vs. blue duel turns out), but it's an interesting point nonetheless.

When there's blue vs blue, the curse cancels.

Or perhaps it multiplies. Obi-Wan wins the fight, but he really looses his padawan.

Would this be comparable to the curse of the red shirt on Star Trek?

Thats the reason why I don't own a single article of red clothing.

Hold up, im confused and im at work so cant reference the dvds. Anakin is using a green saber in AOTC? I thought he had a blue one. I know at the end he fights with a green and a blue, but i thought the green was obi-wans (ie Qui-Gon's old saber).

Because in Episode IV when Obi-Wan gives luke anakin's old saber its blue, and obi-wan uses a blue saber himself. So obviously obi-wan's saber was blue, as was anakins (unless it changed color since it was sitting unused in a chest in obi-wans hut for so long).

Damn you Lucas and your continuity errors

"Anakin, You're father I am" - Yoda

Anakin and Obi-Wan have both lost their sabers by the time they are sentenced in the Arena. They're given loaners by N'Sync when all the Jedi show up. Hence, one has a blue one and one has a green one. Commander Courage's analysis is correct. Furthermore, Anakin and Obi-Wan both lose their own blue sabers on Geonosis. Obi-Wan when he is captured; Anakin's gets destroyed on the conveyer belt in the Droid foundry.

There was a great explanation of the 'red shirts' in Wednesday's episode of Lost, but here goes: every time Kirk and co. went down to a planet's surface to investigate, among the away team would be @ least one anonymous crew member wearing a red Starfleet shirt. This guy was most likely to get killed during the away team's mission, and eventually it became so predictable during the series' 79 episode run that the phenomenon became known as "The Red Shirt Curse." The only crew member to beat the curse was Scotty, and that was because he was a regular cast member.

Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

ahh, thanks, i forgot about that.

so obviously when they went home they both made new sabers and went with the blue blade, which fits in with what they had during episode IV (or in anakins case, what he 'left' for luke)

I just read my post after a couple of weeks, and realize it read like it was from the Dept. of Redundancy Department.

What I meant in my final sentence was that Anakin & Obi-Wan both managed to lose blue sabers, again underscoring CC's point that blue blades just don't cut it (pardon the pun). Add to this that their loaners were one blue and one green, as CC points out. The blue one didn't get the job done. Yoda's green one eventually did.

Man, this thread is a testament to the level of detail some of us study in the movies. I doubt this was purposeful in Lucas' mind because he has such a lack of attention to story detail, but it's the kind of observation that could one day make nice fan fiction.

It's like rock paper scissors. Green beats read beats blue. So I guess if two Jedi's were to fight, blue would beat green and it would come full circle?

I see a new Lucasart's game: STAR WARS: Jedi Rock Paper Scissors.

With a short cameo by Luke Skywalker.

What an interesting note. I must, however, atribute such a bizarre pattern to a coincidence... or is it not? With GL writing and directing these things, you never know what is going to happen next! And I don't mean that in a positive way, like I would with Hitchcock.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I always thought a purple lightsaber would be better suited to the Sith, but that's just me.

I hadn't noticed that before about the blue lightsaber, but now that you mention it, it's kind of interesting.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

I agree. The Jedi should have blue and green, and the Sith should have red an purple. But it was not to be...

Why the heck didnt he put it in the original version of Star Wars then, if it was his original intention? Thats half the reason it looks so dumb in the movie, the other is because it doesnt explain the change in color, until Empire (I think).

Speaking of lightsabers, what is the story behind Mace's purple blade? How did you get George to agree on a color other than blue or green?

The Story? There's no story, is there? Well, there's no real story. One day I just kinda asked George if I could have a different colored lightsaber. He asked me what color I wanted, so I said purple. He then asked me why. I said, "Well, I just want a different color because I am like high up on the Jedi Council and have a bit more power, second to Yoda, and I think I should have a different color." George said there are only two colors, but that he would think about it. When I came back later, he said he had something to show me, and there it was. George said it was just an experiment for the moment. But somehow or other, even though he had done it as an experiment, it was already on the Internet. People began wondering what it all meant--Mace has a purple lightsaber. It was nothing--I asked and he said okay.

Did you get to keep you lightsaber after filming was complete?

Yeah, I did. I asked George if I could keep my lightsaber and he said okay. I couldn't believe it. So I guess this means now people are going to try and break into my house to try and get my lightsaber. (Laughs) "We know where it is, let's get it, let's go in and just get it!" I can see fans now, lining up outside my house. Trust me, it's going to be locked up in a safe-deposit vault; it's not going to be at my house. I'll just own it.

Thats from Issue 80 March/April 2005 issue of the star wars insider.

If its totally true and not a bunch of misinformation propaganda then i guess that clears up that issue. Included the second question cause I thought it was cool...lucky bastard
