I was wondring would star wars be better if it was made by a different director ?? Hes done a great
job doing all six . They can be better done by Steven Speilberg or Ridley Scott thats what i think . George Lucas is good but not the best at least there wont be any changes if made by a different director !!!!

I'm sure it would have been better. I mean, there's already proof. The Empire Strikes Back. Not directed by Lucas. Better. Best.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I don't think he did a great job on episodes 1, 2 & 3. He did a great job on Star Wars, American Graffitti, and THX-1138, then........something happened.

Hmm... Well, the PT couldn't have been worse. But I don't think any director could have saved it.

Did any of you see Beat Takeshi's 'Zatoichi'? I'd love to see him take on a Jedi movie. I think it would be interesting to see the movies remade by a director more familiar with the traditions upon which the Jedi were based. Can you imagine Ang Lee's 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' remade as a Jedi story?!

I've thought of this before with another great trilogy: Leone's 'Man With No Name' spaghetti westerns. You know how 'A Fistful Of Dollars' was based on 'The Bodyguard' by Kurosawa (who was inspired by the westerns of John Ford)? And then they made 'Last Man Standing' with the same story. I can't remember whether anyone has made it into a sci-fi.

I'd love to see the Star Wars saga remade as samurai films, gangster films and westerns (and possibly remade as sci-fi films too). I think the way that these stories can be translated to the different locations is fascinating!

Samurai <-> gunslinger <-> gangster <-> jedi.
Don't you call me a mindless philosopher...!

Hopefully someday the Star Wars universe will be open to many interpretations and versions. More like a true set of mythological tales.

I wonder how this question will be answered.
"Among many things I have to be thankful for are you, the fans. I know that some of you haven't liked every single thing that I've done with the saga, and that you have a strong sense of ownership over all things Star Wars. But take that passion and devotion and channel it into a creative project of your own."

I'd say the problem with the most recent three go far deeper than the direction.

As a side note..whenever I see the name Rick on these forums, I read it as Lick and have to go back and read it again just to check. True story. Happened again the other day.

If Gary Kurtz would have stayed for Episodes 6, 1, 2, and 3 they would have all been great.

Not to defend Lucas too much, but it seems like when you start changing directors in a series, it ends up bad. See Batman and Robin, Superman III and Superman IV. Yes, the prequels could of been much better, but they also could of been much, much worse.

Hey! Episode 6 WAS great! (the other ones I agree with you about, though).

I must go with Mielr here .

No, I think Episdoe 6 is great also (don't get mad), It is one of my favorites. I just meant that it could have been up to SW and ESB standards if Gary had stayed.

Yes, but Tim Burton was replaced by Joel Schumacher. Look what happend when Chris Nolan took over. It is important to have a good director.

Coincidence, I'm sure .

Samurai <-> gunslinger <-> gangster <-> jedi.

That's the whole idea behind the Joesph Campbell thing, isn't it?

Yeah, you're right. When Darth Vader revealed Luke's parentage to him, Kersh wanted to have Vader take his helmet off to reveal the face of Underdog, but since that wasn't technically possible in a realistic way back in 1979, he had to scrap that idea. He also wanted to have a sex scene between Han and Lando as a ploy to get Han's guard down so that Vader could capture him, but Harrison and Billy Dee refused to do it.

Thank goodness for that, huh?

Well, Lucas did ask other directors to direct the PT, but they all turned him down.

The way that I heard it, Lucas wanted to tell the story a certain way and otehr directors tried to dissudae him from doing things which he wanted, so he decided to direct himself. I wonder whatever happened to the young man who gave the reigns of The Empire Strikes Back to another director because he did not feel confident in his own skills.

What boogles my mind is that the director of ESB was offered to direct TPM. We could have had another ESB but he turned Lucas down

Wasn't it the other way around.

I think Lucas offered him, I'm not sure but it is something like that.

Oh, I thought that Kershner wanted to direct but he wanted to do what he did with Empire (make a rich, dark film) and Lucas wanted TPM to become what it ultimately became.
