FYI. I fixed the famous Leia Blank Shot from Return of the Jedi. If anyone needs it for their own work, PM me.

Great job! Have you done any other sfx fixes on these films?

Yes, and it’s all your fault: https://youtu.be/CZYrlnr4Yz4

Hahaha!

This looks really good. I’m still having an issue with the part around 2:06-2:12. Seems odd that Anakin hops onto the other conveyor that’s moving in the opposite direction of Padme. Cutting that bit makes Anakin’s struggle to catch her feel a little more frantic.

• Padme falls from platform and is quickly moved away.
• Anakin delays but jumps down to go after her.
• He gets held back when the Geonosians attack.
• Padme is able to quickly make it through the machine obstacle course.
• Anaking slowly follows by slicing through them.
• Padme gets pushed in the cauldron.
• Anakin notices but has to fend off more Geonosians.

I promise I’m not trying to be difficult 😁

You’re not being difficult! I love the feedback! It’s super helpful! (With that in mind PM me when you get a chance. I wanna run something “hush-hush” past you.)

Personally, I’d stick with what I have for Meta-Pacing reasons. I think you have a point about the spatial maneuverings being a bit wonky, but I reckon those stupid conveyors loop around so much that their direction at any given time doesn’t matter too much, as long as the overall idea of the scene lands.

Please keep all your edited shots well organised and on hand, I can see the community being very interested in building up a library of options!

Way ahead of you, Cap’n! Phase3 and I are tag-teaming on quite a few effects shots/restorations at the mo’, and I’m already beginning to organize a library of all of the work we’re doing. Not sure exactly how it’ll be hosted, but we’re recomposing/restoring shots from all six of George’s films, so there’ll be plenty for folks to play with.

Along those lines, I’m trying to figure out how ILM did Anakin’s Force Premonitions in RotS for something top secret I’m working on. Do you know anyone who might know the filters/techniques they used? I’ve worked professionally as an After Effects Animator/Compositor, so I’m happy to build out the comp myself, but if I’d love to at least start off in the right direction, haha!

Just wait til we get to the Arena Battle. It’s gonna be Force Mad!

I know you said it’s something that you’re really proud of, so I can’t wait to see it!

FYI It’s live: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1C-UtrN7ew7RJ46eIARA26fIql07RbBKF/view?usp=drive_link

I really like the pacing of the arena battle. Of course, I had to take a crack at it. Same order as yours but Anakin and Padme don’t ride the chariot (horrible sfx) and Dooku doesn’t stop the battle. Just about every scene has some type of trim.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/19LF-MApgyiPyhRYUuEIE5UCClEeZ_q3w/view?usp=sharing

K got a chance to watch it through. I really like the idea of the LAAT’s coming in at the end of the battle without stopping. If there was more good footage building up that sequence, I think that idea could definitely work (Though I still prefer the original).

All in all, I would keep my version as it is for META-editing (edits across sequences/films) reasons. Here’s a couple of them.

-I need the fight to stop for a breath at Mace’s entrance and right before the LAATs fly in, because I speed up the beast wars. If those breaths are shortened it feels too frantic.

-The chariot sequence was originally in little pieces sprinkled throughout the arena battle, but I recut it all back together to make it “Romantic” in an Errol Flynn kinda way. Throughout all of Attack of the Clones, I reworked the romantic chemistry between Anakin and Padme to focused far more on the way they fight together, rather than the way they talk together.

-I try to leave 10-15% of the “Jank” in all of my STAR WARS recuts. If you make the films make too much sense and focus too much on continuity, they become sterile. So is “This Party’s Over.” a bit goofy? Yes! But it falls into that 10% “Jank” that needs to stay IMO.

Really enjoying your takes! I might take some time tomorrow to rework the droid factory one more time, because I think you’re on to something with the ending.

I meant to comment on this last week but was swamped with other stuff. There are a bunch of little trims in this you might appreciate.

• Cut unnecessary shot of the gang being surrounded - 0:12-0:15 (also works well with the music)
• Slightly trimmed beginning of Dooku turning around - 0:17 (so his reaction isn’t as delayed)
• Slightly trimmed before Twilek ignites lightsaber - 0:28 (looks like they’re standing around waiting for a queue)
• Trimmed first and last part of Windu jumping off balcony and landing on ground - 0:57. (speed up the pace, and bad sfx not as noticeable)
• Slightly trimmed right after Anakin ignites lightsaber and before he turns around to slice Obiwan’s handcuffs - 1:16 (less clunky)
• Cut Obiwan aggressively stabbing the Acklay in the head - 2:19 (doesn’t seem very Jedi-like)
• Cut Windu flipping over the battle droid, running away, and batting the laser - 2:24-2:29 (cartoony)
• Cut Windu running from the Reek - 2:40 (looks goofy)
• Inserted Jango getting up when Reek is pawing at the ground - 2:56
• Removed shot of Reek charging and knocking battle droid - 3:01 (cartoony)
• Cut Neimoidians - 3:26 (awkward)
• Cut Jedi screaming Haaaa!!! - 3:29
• Trimmed super battle droid punching the regular battle droid - 3:35 (cartoony)
• Slightly trimmed the end where Dooku and the gang observe the battle - 3:44 (goes on a little too long)
• Cut Yoda saying “around the survivors, a perimeter create” - 4:36
• Cut Twilek slowly getting into ship - 5:08
• Slight trim when Windu is standing around in the ship at the beginning of the shot - 5:15
• Cut Dooku on scooter - 5:45 (goofy)

Are you positively sure you don’t want to remove “You call this a diplomatic solution? No, I call it aggressive negotiations”? haha 😂

I get your reasoning behind all of those those alterations. That’s a very consistent way to cut the sequence. The reason I wouldn’t make any of those changes is that from my point of view STAR WARS needs a bit of “Cartoony Jankiness” in order to feel like STAR WARS. If you strip it back too far you end up with a serious SCI-FI epic that for my money is a bit too lifeless.

I actually generally start by making a lot of the cuts you’re suggesting, and then slowly fade a bit of the “bad rhythm” and “goofiness” back into the sequence. From my point of view, the “used universe” that STAR WARS is famous for, extents to the editing rhythm. You have to break the beat just enough so that it feels “real” in an indie kinda way, rather than a glossy music video.

Where the line is between too goofy and just goofy enough is all down to personal taste. In short I think all of your changes are more than valid. I just wouldn’t personally make them.

I’ll give one example as to why I keep something “goofy”, and you can apply this logic to the rest of your questions: I kept the “Aggressive Negotiations” line because I deleted the setup (The dinner scene), so this is now an original, bantery quip that Padme comes up with. To me that line is a good payoff to the conversation before the Droid Factory where Padme is adamant that she wants to “Find a Diplomatic Solution to this mess.” For my money, Anakin making fun of her sincerity, and Padme cheekily bantering back is right in line with the kind banter you see between Han and Leia in IV and V.

Yeah, these things definitely vary depending on peoples tastes. There are many parts that made me cringe in the theater 20+ years ago and have only gotten worse over time. I’ve never been a fan of characters making lighthearted jokes in the middle of a battle. It takes away any serious threat of them being in danger. Surprisingly, I’m fine with much of the humor in the original trilogy. I really appreciated you removing C3P0 and R2 dodging the crossfire in ANH though. haha

Interesting! That makes a bunch of sense. I think those quips don’t bother me so much, because I spent some time working in manufacturing, where you’re constantly in danger of getting killed by a forklift. One day your buddy would get sent to hospital with his leg cut open, the next day you’d be working beside your wingman and grab him by the vest as a forklift cleans out his mobile computer out from under him. I hate to admit it, but your first response in all of those moments is to crack a joke. The worse it is, the quicker you are to make a joke (none of which I can repeat here 😉).

I can relate and have used dark humor at inappropriate times too. 😊

As far as Anakin and Padme joking around, I wouldn’t mind as much if it occurred after the battle was winding down. Not a big deal - just personal preference. Of course, it’s not nearly as bad as C3P0’s head being swapped out with a battle droid and all that ensued. I almost walked out of the theater to demand a refund 😄

For me it was Anakin getting trampled by s giant Tick-Cow while Padme does a photoshoot for the upcoming Renaissance Fair. . . That’s the point where I knew we were in trouble. . .

Haha, that was a horrendous scene. Fortunately there are enough good moments to salvage the film into something watchable. 😄

Did you make any major changes to the assassination worm and Coruscant chase?

I hate the romance is much is the next guy but Padme’s dress in that scene is probably the most beautiful dress I’ve ever seen.

You’re not wrong. Padme’s whole wardrobe for the Prequels was ridiculously well designed. One of her best designs is in the deleted scene where she addresses the Senate. If I was the costume designer, I would have been SO TICKED when that scene got cut.

Yeah, the Picnic Scene just before that bizarre frolic is actually one of the better written scenes in AotC, if you tweak it a bit.

Honestly, the thing that hurt me the most recutting Attack of the Clones was the slow realization of how close George was to making a great film. I found it shockingly easy to get the romance arc working (I thought it would be hard.), but once I figured out the three or so mistakes that George made across the whole film, and corrected them globally, the whole movie fell into place.

To answer your question, yes, I overhauled the whole front end of the movie. It would take too long to write out a full change list, but the basic gist is this. I recut Anakin and Obi-Wan as a great team with good banter, removing all of the whining and helicopter parenting. Anakin is especially reframed as being extremely talented, to make it believable that Padme falls for him. I also reworked Jango, so that the first time you see him is when he plugs Zam with the dart. That change ends the first act with a sense of forward momentum charging into the second act.

Dang it! I knew I missed someone to give special thanks to! Sorry bro! I added your change to the description. I wish YouTube, would let me replace videos with minor alterations, but it is what it is. . . That was one of my favorite tweaks to the scene. Great job!

1 hour? Wow, that is ambitious! Mine is almost exactly 90 minutes, and so are all of the rest of my recuts of I-VI (except for III which comes in around 75mins - still feature length, baby!). I didn’t aim for a specific run time, but I found that STAR WARS films just seem to pace out beautifully at 90mins for some reason (especially Empire Strikes Back). I’m really curious as to how you’re gonna get it down to 1 hour. . . I don’t think I could find a way to do that.

My cut of Attack of the Clones is 99% done. I’m just doing little tweaks at this stage, so why don’t you pick the next sequence I upload. What would like to see?

I will be cleaning up / restoring the footage, plus upscaling it too. I’m currently searching through my files to find the best copy of the footage.
Oh and I have some footage that isn’t on YouTube – I’ll send you a message about that, plus the AOTC & ROTS footage we chatted about via PM.

Now that’s certainly better-paced! So much simpler than the overdone set piece from the original cut.

Don’t tell anyone. . . But I think Attack of the Clones is becoming my favorite STAR WARS film. . .

The writing/editing of original version is ABSOLUTELY BONKERS, but when you sit back and think about just how many cool sequences George crammed in there, it’s kinda mind-boggling.

I love the way you edited Obi-Wan and Anakin vs Dooku, it reminds me of “Dune: Part Two”. By the way, I also love the Droid Factory scene, even though, I wish you kept the scene where Obi-Wan talks with Dooku.
I will use some of your ideas to my own cut(When I have time).
And I agree with you, AOTC is great if it’s reedited.

Early on when I was breaking down which scenes I was gonna keep and which scenes I was gonna toss for Attack of the Clones, I took a long look at the Obi-Wan and Count Dooku scene, but just couldn’t find a way to use it, based on the way I reworked AotC as a whole. If you reinsert the Padme scene where she addresses the senate, the natural bookend to that scene is the other deleted scene where she’s interrogated by Dooku. My two cents is that the Padme Addresses the Senate Scene is ESSENTIAL to the plot of Attack of the Clones. It improves the sense of so many other sequences. In order to get the Obi-Wan and Count Dooku scene to work, you’d need an entirely different version of AotC to the one we got (and a totally different RotS). I think I’m with you, that that theoretical version of AotC would probably be a lot better, but at the end of the day, I’ve gotta work with the footage George gave us.
