New "Superman" actor announced!

One of the guys rumored to be on the short list for Bond when they chose Craig, very interesting.

Not sure he fits the idea of Superman unless we are supposed to forget Reeve.

I am more worried about the story, the costume and how they make the flying look than the actor at this point.

Though i was not one of the Haters of Routh as Superman.

That and the fact that presumably this will be the second superman not shot on film but video, and in 3-D this time which has me very worried.

Tom Welling is supposed to don the Routh suit before the final season of smallville is over, hopefully they have a budget to do a new one and not reuse that.  I also hope the suit is real and practical and not cgi made in post.

I am not sorry to say Cavill has the bond look , as many years ago Clive Owen did.  Guy who was almost Bond but too young at the time Chosen as Superman, lol.  Who would have thunk it.

Now the Rage that they cast a non American as superman will begin.  Just like when they picked Bale for Batman.

I'm with you on the " story, the costume and how they make the flying look..." concerns. I am stuck in the past as far as "Superman" on film goes. Some people could never accept anyone but Connery as Bond, and I feel strongly about the Superman actor. There was only one guy who could fill the cape for me, and he is dead.  My hope is that they can make a film that will satisfy and inspire a new generation of cinema fans like the 1977 film did.

I went to the new Tron film in 3-D, and was not happy with the whole gimmick that 3-D is. The original Superman was riveting using classic special effects from the golden age (wires and rear projection), and great storytelling, directing, and acting to grip the audience. Superman need to be handled with movie making respect in ever aspect. Gimmicks such as 3-D, and trendy pop culture applications to a Superman film's look and story telling style is sure unwelcome news to me.

I sure hope he shaves and gets a hair cut before they film the movie.   He does not look like Superman right now.

Not everything has to be abut the look. If he can act the part I'm fine with him - I mean, a limey is playing Spader-Man now too. I hope they use a new suit, I really wasn't impressed with Routh's. There was something about it that didn't work for me... I think it was the S emblem, but I'm not entirely sure.

It wasn't the "S" for me, it was just the whole rubbery look.  The whole "tights" thing has gotten a bad rap in superhero movies, but I don't think Superman can work in anything but tights and trying to new-fangle it in any way just looks weird.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

SO why are they re-casting the role?  Is this some kind of reboot?

*gasp*

Here's a pic for you Warb.

I think he's a fine choice. Routh came off real young... not only too young to be Superman but especially too young to play a jaded older Superman who'd been gone for five years. Although, that meant he knocked up Lois when she was 16. Shady.

Cavill has a real presense and sense of maturity, even if he is only 27. And he's not a spitting image of the late great Christopher Reeve, which, coupled with the music in "Superman Returns" only served to constantly remind you that you weren't watching a better movie.

I just hope they dont feel the need to do an origin. PLEASE no more!

not everything, but Superman does.    Superman does not have look hair or a beard.   and yeah, I know he had long hair in the comics for time.   Whoever decided that was a good idea, needs to be shot.

I also hope they use the John Williams score, it will be impossible for them to come up with score that would be anywhere near as good as that.  It would not seem like Superman without that music.

He seems to look the part enough.

Although I hated Superman Returns, I thought Brandon Routh did a decent enough job with what he had to work with. I don't see why they couldn't use him again.

I mean, Sean Connery played the same character [James Bond] in Thunderball and Never say never again...for example.

I am glad they are going in a different direction with this.  Trying to imitate CR was a bad idea... not to mention trying to imitate the original was an even worse idea.  If I thought I was going to hear a rehash of how flying is the safest form of transportation, statistically speaking, I'd have to skip this one.

This needs to be a character driven movie, not action driven.  I'd like to see another origin movie but I would understand why they wouldn't want to.  I guess all we can do is wait and see.

John Williams Superman theme is being rumored/reported to not be used.  As this is a new continuity.  They have yet to announce the Guy scoring the film as far as i know, the rumored individual is Hans Zimmer.

Since i have not yet a full press release for 2012's the Man of Steel i am not sure whether or not it has been confirmed he is doing the score.

There have been at least 2 attempts to get Williams to score another Superman film, with the Donner Cut of Superman II, and With Superman Returns.  Both times he turned the offer down.

Hopefully they don't go back to the original comics continuity where superman could not fly and could just run really fast and defy gravity.

Also hoping its not the bad emo superman like in the new Earth one graphic novel by JMS.

I don't think there's much of a threat of that happening.

Now that I think of it, "The Adventures of Bearded Superman Who Can't Fly" might actually be a fresh and exciting angle to take when they make this movie.

Just imagine it! Bearded Superman walking around, talking on his cell phone, maybe buying a churro. He could fight Bearded Lex Luthor, who attacks the city in a giant Bearded Robot!! And don't get me started on Bearded Lana Lang!! Boo-Yeah!

Throw in some polar bear (animal kingdom's most vicious killer) fighting at the Fortress of Solitude, fighting a giant spider (animal kingdom's most vicious killer) somewhere in the third act.  Lose the capes, the tights, and the flying and we have a Superman movie for the 90s ages.

Personally, I hope he does NOT shave or get a haircut before they film.  He might not look too much like Street Person Superman right now, but wait until they start filing in 14 months!  IT'S GOING TO BE AWESOME!

What I mean to say is, I'm pretty sure that he will get a shave and a haircut (2 bits!) sometime before filming, even if the result is that his hair and beard are longer during filming than they are in that picture.
