‘David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going from Winterfell to a galaxy far, far away…’

www.starwars.com/news/game-of-thrones-creators-david-benioff-and-d-b-weiss-to-write-and-produce-a-new-series-of-star-wars-films

'David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going from Winterfell to a galaxy far, far away.

It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

No release dates have been set for the new films, and there have (thankfully) been no sightings of White Walkers around Lucasfilm.’

Mod Edit: As of late October 2019, Benioff and Weiss’ Star Wars project, is no longer happening…

Well, it’s not as if we didn’t know more Star Wars movies were on the way. I quite like Game of Thrones, so I am excited. I’ve always wanted some different stories in Star Wars separate from the main Saga, which in my view was complete after Return of the Jedi. So yeah, I’m glad it’s on their hands, just like I’m glad there’s a new trilogy on Rian’s.

Edit: please don’t read “I hate the ST” because as a matter o fact I quite like it, even if I’m not its biggest fan.

so, we’ve been teetering on the brink of over saturation for a while while. I fear this may push us over the edge.

Maybe. We don’t know schedule (unless video lays it out) or resulting quality yet. I’ll worry about it when I see it.

j/k I don’t worry about these kinds of things.

D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are the creators of the TV Series Game of Thrones. The films will be separate from both the Skywalker Saga and the Rian Johnson trilogy.

Very interesting. Also note they aren’t listed as directors, which is smart.

It’s impossible to kill my love for the OT, R1, and some of the classic EU that was a huge part of my childhood and adolescence.

But I’m starting to feel the fatigue creeping in with al the new stuff. I liked but didn’t love TLJ. Heck, I only saw it twice and don’t have the desire to see it again in the theater (something Star Wars hasn’t done to me since AOTC, which I’ve hated from my first viewing!)

I liked that (like R1) the imagery in the new Solo trailer reminded me of some of the best 70’s-90’s EU, but otherwise I felt little actual excitement.

I’m totally indifferent about RJ’s announced trilogy.

And now this… hope they’re good, but once again I feel NO anticipation. It’s weird to feel this way about new Star Wars movies…

Genuine question, do you in general get excited about new movies? I myself have felt my anticipation levels for major franchise movies (and maybe just new movies in general) drop significantly as I’ve gotten older. I just wonder if I’m the only one.

I’m still pretty young, but my excitement for new movies in general has gone down. It’s better this way, because sometimes I forget release dates and get excited when it sneaks up on me. Also, I don’t live very near to any theaters.

Well, I’m not that much older than you.

I think it’s in some ways similar for me and in some ways not. When I was younger there were always a handful of big movies every year, and in between them all I was looking forward to was the next. Now, I live really close to a lot of theaters and see a movie just about every week. Oddly enough the effect is the pretty much the same, every week I look at the new releases and it’s kind of like “oh that’s out this week? Awesome! I know what I’m seeing.”

Wild speculation - is the choice of names related to the style of movie being planned i.e. Sith backstabbing in the days of the Old Republic?

When I go to college this fall, I’ll get Moviepass since there are a few different theaters in town. If I have time to see any movies that is, idk how much time I’ll have between college things.

MoviePass highly recommend, especially if one of the theaters shows limited release movies.

And your free time probably depends on your major and/or how much you procrastinate, college for me when I first started going to theaters very regularly, with friends being big enablers (and this was before MoviePass existed/was affordable).

Anyway, back to topic, despite my general drop in new release anticipation, the main line Star Wars films usually overcome that and get me excited. The other movies I have a bit of a wait and see approach, depending on the subject matter the investment levels aren’t the same. If say, the first film in this series is good (or it’s about something really interesting), I’m sure my excitement will go up.
