“We’ve got a rare Sunday post for you with a bit of new Star Wars DVD news. At the Celebration III convention in Indianapolis this weekend, George Lucas let it slip that a new DVD box set of all 6 films is in the works, possibly to include an all-new bonus disc containing deleted scenes from the original trilogy. Expect no further changes in the films themselves. In addition, don’t look for a high-definition release of the films in 2007. Lucas also confirmed that the digitally-screened version of Episode III will be slightly longer than the traditional film version. You can click here to read more at The Force.net. Note that the story contains what some may consider to be a slight spoiler about the upcoming film.”

Excellent! So when this comes out in a year and a half, I will have had a year and a half worth of enjoyment for $40. Not too bad if you ask me.

Not that I've bought the set (haven't taken the plunge yet) but I agree with your thinking here- I break everything down into entertainment dollars and to my mind that's a pretty fair bargain. That's one of the reasons I see so few flics in the theatre anymore- I have a decent home theatre system and I can wait to buy the DVD of any given title I'm interested in: Theatre=$7-$10 for commercials, disrespectful patrons and sticky floors and two hours of movie; DVD= $15-$20 for lots of extra content (usually), unlimited re-watches, my own kitchen and bathroom and the ability to pause at my leisure. Now THAT'S value to me!

But that message does say that there won't be any further changes before the next release. Look, once III's come out on DVD in November, of course a 6-pack set is inevitable, but it will purely be the DVDs currently available packaged into another box. It would only be of any value to anyone who has not yet bought the 2004 trilogy set and the 2 existing prequel DVDs.

I am a bit surprised to hear that there won't be a 2007 Hi-Def re-release. I expect that's due to the fact that the movies have been released on DVD - and that's that. If a HD set is to happen, looks like Lucas will wait for the next-generation of discs - whether that be Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Surely, then we will see a re-re-re-re-re-re-release - and it will no doubt include further changes, high definition, more special features, etc, etc. By this point we should also see some modifications to the prequels and perhaps even TPM's puppet yoda replaced with the digital model from episode II. That's not wishful thinking, as there was a "warm up" for episode III which involved replacing puppet yoda.

Also; Greencapt - I completely agree with your theory! Home theater (as long as the screen is fairly big, and the sound system's good) is the best way to go!

He can release all the sets he wants. I ain't buyin' jack unless the original cuts of the OT are on there.

DUDE, it's being disscussed at the "The Star Wars Saga DVD Boxset" if you look below at the main page.
