I've also heard that some of the Tantive clips look a bit better.

the opening shots of Star Wars; someone said the walls actually looked white. What spelling error?

Tantavive

Who's a what now?

I was going to link to a Tantavive but all I found on Google was a woman named Tanta Vive who died not that long ago.  It didn't seem right to link to that.  Anyhoo...

Let's not paint ol' Ridley with the same brush!

Same brush, less paint!  :-)  Those Gladiator blu-rays were a disgrace.

Word is that Scott is so busy finishing up Robin Hood that he had nothing to do with the Gladiator Blu-ray. Blade Runner is a reference release in pretty much every way and I doubt he'd put his stamp of approval on Gladiator in its current state.

Original Trilogy shots in Star Wars In Concert seemed to be from the same master as the DVD.  Tantive shots did seem a bit whiter to me, but Luke's Garage was still way too dark, the overhead Star Destroyer still glared off the camera, and ESB shots were blue, which makes me think that I just WANTED Tantive to be white (or they took clips from a copy they started fixing but only got a few minutes in).

Interesting fact about the TPM shots.  Not only did they have CGI Yoda, there's actually more on the screen.  It seems like they zoomed in to fill whatever aspect ratio it was, but they zoomed in using more film than is currently available!

Look at the ceiling above their heads and the space behind Plo's chair.  All of the Yoda shots I did my comparisons with had extra space.  Where did this space come from?  Wouldn't the master they used to make the clips have the same area we've always seen, just zoomed into a particular part maybe?  Or did they go back to the original filmed elements where there is more than the 2.35:1 image to be captured from?  Is that possible?

Sadly, she remains a puppet in this shot:

...which has more information on the top and bottom but LESS on the sides!

Maybe not, but if I were a director, I'd be rather vocal if someone released a blu-ray transfer in that state.

I wouldn't read too much into the framing. Whenever something gets transfered, it is usually cropped to some degree, even if it is anamorphic. They re-oriented the cropping a little bit for the concert/new master, probably just based on the choices of whoever was supervising the new transfer.

So this does show that there IS a new master/transfer, and they cropped from it?  Wouldn't that be a big deal?  They didn't just paste the CGI Yoda over the DVD, its on a whole different/new transfer.

Well, the CG Yoda would be on the negative, which is essentially a 2K digital intermediate. You wouldn't want to paste it onto the DVD transfer from 2001, which sucks even for its time. But yes, I would say a new master has been made with CG Yoda in it, or, if they just edited the clip into the concert footage, that it will soon exist since the scene is now officially endorsed.

i know im only looking at a cam version shot from the crowd but the in concert version of tpm does look better than the current versions even things like the colour of peoples eyes look more vibrant and less edge enhanced which should in theory be more evident on  a screen of that magnitude!

anyhoo was there a specific channel in austria that was known to have shown them i can find orf1HD listing ep2+3 for last august no screenshots or anything just a listing though im pretty up to date on my sw HD caps and not really found anything that wasnt from sky or premiere(germany) i still have 4-6 on my SKY-HD box one day ill do a 1080 cap :)

Didn't we just leave this party?

The 6 Star Wars movies will be broadcast in france in the following weeks.

I'm afraid that logo could be seen on the picture:

http://upload.wikimedia.org" />

Hope it will only be on the black bars (and hopefuly not at all.)

It's an HD chanel, but sometime they broadcast standard definition movies I believe, so I really don't know, I only guess it's an HD version.

I can't record it, but my father can (though he has never recorded a full movie in HD). I'll ask him to do some test this week end. But I can't promise anything.

That's interesting news, TMBTM!  I'd be interested to see what the quality of these French broadcasts is like.

Tonight on french tv (M6HD): TPM. The other episodes will follow, one movie per week.

My father will try to record the first movie ( I can't ask him to record every other episode though). I think it will be HD, but I'm afraid it could be full 16:9 and not the original aspect ratio. We'll see.

Keep in mind that most directors are usually more interested in current projects than revisiting past works. Scott probably hasn't even seen the Gladiator Blu-ray.

As fans, our priorities are quite different from theirs.

The french TV broadcast of TPM was full 16:9, what a letdown. I'm sure all the other 5 movies will have the same treatment.

I don't know yet if there are new Yoda's shots in it, for I did not stand long in front of my TV... I doubt it though. Will tell ya this week end if there is something interesting or not.

I'd be really surprised if they premiered the new Yoda in France, but who knows, they might have!

I said: "if I were a director". ;-)   If Scott hasn't seen the blu-ray given the storm of controvesy surrounding its quality issues, then he shows a surprising lack of interest in it, given his reputation for attention to detail and enthusiasm for quality DVD home releases, which I hope would extend to blu-rays.  He provides interviews for many of his releases, records director's commentaries, and has revisited a number of his works.  I repeat that find it odd (and somewhat disappointing) that he has not been more vocal on the issue.

How can he possibly know about it if he's in the middle of directing a huge movie all year long? He's not a 12 year old girl checking the web on his iphone 40 times a day.

I doubt he needs to check forty times a day to know, and I find it hard to believe - busy or not - that news of this has passed him by.

Its not news though.

I know its a big deal to home video enthusiasts on message boards. But thats as far as it goes. Its a matter for the Warner home video department, who SHOULD be keeping wind of this stuff, not Ridley Scott.
