(New HD Version in the works) Sharkey's "Lord of the Rings" Purist Editions (Released) — Page 3

Phil Dragash, Kerr and myself are collaborating for a revamping of the three-film fan edit of LOTR. This will, by the way, coincide with an HD version of Kerr's book cuts. (Kerr is doing most of the actual editing this time, for which I am thankful.)

From the beginning, I had wanted to make two sets of LOTR fan edits. The first was to be akin to the TTT Purist Cut that had circulated the internet since 2002. The other was to be akin to Phil Dragash’s abandoned book cuts (later taken up and greatly exceeded by Kerr’s own book cuts).
The 3-film formatted edits, hitherto known as Sharkey’s Purist Edits, did not concern themselves with the narrative structure but sought to make the films ‘historically accurate’ in that the content itself was to be made to fit into a puristy mindset. The POV still shuffles across many narrative strands at once, and even some things not portrayed in the main body of LOTR (such as the romance of Aragorn and Arwen) were included (although that particular example still needed much work to make it puristy enough to be kept). To me, the 3-film fan edit must be something suitable for theatrical exhibition and for a hypothetical first time viewer. It must not feel like anything other than a polished film in and of itself. For these reasons, the nature of the 3-film fan edit prevents it from being as puristy as a 6-part one.
The 6-part ‘book cut’ fan edit can be free to go hog wild. Much more can be done with this one in the way of puristy alterations that would not work as well in a 3-film structure. Most notably, the narrative structure of the films is forced into the template laid out by the book, and is given an episodic or serial feel. An example is the literal “eye” of Sauron floating atop Barad-dûr. In a six part narrative that follows a specific strand is able to afford the lack of a clear, central antagonistic presence. However, an earlier attempt at including the removal of the eye left the film trilogy lacking, so I reluctantly re-included it and I think the edits are better off for it.

We are in the planning stages, gathering ideas and throwing mockups together. Any new ideas will be considered.

Release date is unknown, and will probably be a ways off. Kerr is still waiting for his new computer, necessary for editing in HD. The final format will most likely be AVCHD discs, possibly two per film if it makes sense.

While there are many new edits we are planning to make, the single largest is the removal of the literal floating eye of Sauron. I have wavered on this point in the past, but intend on maintaining this purist point.

Here is a brief list of some of the changes we are considering:

If it is fluid and does not cause issues, it would be nice to trim some of the prologue’s racism toward men: “… who above all else desire power” and “but the hearts of men are easily corrupted.”

Cut Sauron stepping on Narsil, implying that Isildur swung a full sword and Sauron.

Merry and Pippin fooling around with Gandalf’s fireworks has to go. Hopefully, with a little sound effect replacement, we can keep the actual dragon firework. But Merry and Pippin’s horrible introduction has to be cut even if it means losing the dragon firework altogether, I think.

Have the Black Rider that rides by Maggot say only “Baggins” and not “Shire.” This makes the Black Riders seem less incompetent, and less like zombies moaning, “braaaains.”

Cut Sam holding Frodo’s hand back. Frodo resists the call of the ring on his own.

Include Kerr's edits that make Bree less scary.

If it can be done without issue, remove Aragorn’s line “blinded by their greed” from his description of the Nazgul. Less racism toward men, which fuels Aragorn’s excised doubt subplot.

I would like to find a better way to transition from Frodo passing out to him waking up in Rivendell that doesn’t include the weird images we get in the film. If nothing else, at least make sure Arwen’s prayer is gone.

I am always perplexed at the scene where Frodo reunites with Merry and Pippin. I can understand why M and P are so excited and happy (because Frodo is okay) but why is Frodo so over-the-top with silly happiness? I don’t suppose anything can be done about it.

The main bit of Elrond’s racism that remains thus far in these edits is his scornful description of Isildur to Gandalf and generalization of men being too weak. The only way I can imagine keeping this backstory of Isildur while discarding the baggage would be to bake the Isildur backstory into the Council of Elrond. I doubt it can be done fluidly, but I can live with a little bit of racism from Elrond if I have to.

I think we should just throw out the scene at Aragorn’s mother’s grave, rather than salvage bits of it as I had done.

Cut the scene from the EE as the Fellowship approaches Moria, because it adds to the strong suspicion of Boromir that we are trying to tone down.

Cut Merry and Pippin throwing rocks into the water and Aragorn chastising them for it. In the book, Boromir was the one throwing rocks, so it’s not an innately foolish thing, and it only serves to further characterize Merry and Pippin as idiots.

I was skeptical of cutting the 'dead dwarves' at the entrance of Moria, but Kerr did it so well that I support it now.

I don’t suppose we could, but it’d be cool to make Glamdring glow blue as well.

Several strange lines in Lorien will be cut, such as "The Enemy knows you have entered here," and "We shall not meet again."

If it can be done without seeming like an obvious edit, I’d like to remove the scene where Aragorn lets Frodo go and the subsequent distraction by Merry and Pippin. But only if it is fluid and works well. (I tried a few mockups, but they all fell flat. The Uruks appear to come out of nowhere, and that’s not good.)

Cut Grima and Eowyn’s scene with the line “Oh, he must have died sometime in the night.” It is fabricated and appropriates Aragorn’s loving words as Grima’s cruelty.

Removing the Aragorn and Arwen dream scene; I don't know why I left it in the first place.

As in Kerr's edits, remove Frodo's lies about Gollum to Faramir.

Throughout the battle, trim extraneous shots of women and children when easily done.

Use the theatrical version of the Gollum interrogation, as it is less harsh on Faramir.

Cut Legolas taking a cheap shot at a dead orc to even his score with Gimli. (I’d be willing to lose this scene altogether if it’d make for a more effective transition to Faramir’s contemplation scene that uses the boat dream scene.)

The parley with Saruman will be different. The 'information' sub-plot will be crippled, Saruman won't express knowledge of Frodo's mission, nor of Aragorn's identity.

Cut the scene with Aragorn and Legolas on the balcony, as it serves to remind the audience of things as the third movie begins, whereas it now is at the end of the second film and is not needed.

As a rule, we'll be removing as much of Gothmog as we possibly can.

As the soldiers march out of the citadel to ride to Osgiliath, cut the shot of some producer’s kids who were hobbits earlier.

Cut Gimli interrupting Aragorn staring down the mountainside at the king of the dead.

General note. I wonder if it’d be doable to darken Minas Tirith and the surrounding geography as Sauron sends the clouds forth. Phil did something like this in his unfinished edit of Book V, though neither of us still have it. (I lost a few CD spindles full of this sort of precious junk when I moved.)

If easily done, cut any cries of, “Fire!”

If it can be done well, possibly darken Shelob's lair. It would make Galadriel's gift relevant, rather than drawing Shelob near right away.

Possibly featuring Phil Dragash as the voice of the Witch-King of Angmar.

Cut the shot of the Dead sweeping across the citidel. Lessens the damage of the deus ex machina.

Cut Aragorn murdering the Mouth of Sauron.

As long as it will work in the context of a 3-film edit that cuts across the various narratives, I’d like to have the ring apparently be destroyed right as it hits the lava. (This might not be doable, given the need to cut back and forth.)

This may be an outrageous and unfeasible idea, but brainstorming never hurts. What if we could stretch Merry and Pippin to be just a little taller during the few shots where all four hobbits stand together?

Cut away from the coronation scene just before Frodo’s dry lips cleave. It only requires shaving half a second of footage, and the audio could be smoothed over anywhere in the next thirty seconds as it need not sync to anything else on screen for a little while.

Hi All,

Does anyone have information on how to get DVD copies of the latest Purist editions? For the record, I own all of the original EE DVDs.

Thanks!

Torrents are the best way, and I'm unsure if the filesharing links from fanedit.org are still working. I did not set those up to begin with.

However, Kerr and I are collaborating on a thoroughly improved version of both our prior edits. There will be a successor to Kerr's 6-part book cut as well as a 3-film style version. The plan is to release it at 720p, because Kerr is doing some re-cropping and other fx work.

It might be a way off, but I'd be surprised if FOTR isn't done by the time the next Hobbit film comes out.

Very cool, thanks! If I can't get the 2.1 torrents, I'll just wait for the improved version, hopefully next year :)

Point of clarification, fanedit.org no longer provides any links.

We've been working on them, and are mostly finished with FOTR and TTT. We're holding out for the EE of An Unexpected Journey to see if there will be any helpful Narsil footage.

It's progressing, and I think the result will be much better than my previous attempts. This is Kerr we're talking about, after all. Kerr is doing all of the actual editing this time, for which I am very thankful. I'm serving in a creative consultant role. These versions will be, in many ways, less puristy than either my or his previous edits. But I think the story that will be told in these edits will be better off for it. FOTR is shaping up to be around 3 hours.

The real fun will begin when all three hobbit films are out, and we try to pair them down to a single purist-minded edit of comporable running time to a single LOTR film.

Starting with FOTR, it will likely be close to the end of the year before these will be released, due to waiting for AUJ:EE.

That, and it seems like we always have new ideas after we take a break and return to the task. If we just put these out months ago, they wouldn't have been as good.

This ^ is what I'm waiting for!!

The current plan is to open The Hobbit standalone film with "modern day" Bilbo beginning his memoirs. We never see his face, and he narrates to us his "concerning hobbits" section. But that's two years off yet.

As always, we love suggestions or ideas.

Interesting stuff here.  I've been recently rewatching my LOTR EE Bluray set, and honestly now I've come to the point where I realize these films really need improvement.  Can't wait to see new HD editions.  I'll probably just wait versus watching the current 6 book cuts.

Glad to hear it, man. It'll be a way off yet, but I think the end result will be superb, given that Kerr is at the helm.

And hey, LOTR can use more editors; you might even have some brilliant ideas yourself.

Well, I do know I'd love to maybe help with the one film edit of The Hobbit, as that's one thing I so badly want to see come to be a reality.  Of course, that's years away, but atleas I'll be done with my SW edits by that time hopefully.

** Spoilers for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug below **

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but how is this doing? After the disaster that was DoS (in my opinion, just awful - shortening the original material and adding fan fiction, the Harry Potter-style Gandalf-Sauron duel - which works in HP's universe, but not in Middle Earth, puh-lease - and the idiotic barrel sequence and utter stupidity of the dwarves vs Dragon sequence really annoyed me greatly. Oh and where has "The hands of a King are the hands of a healer" gone to?), I need something to keep me going. I still can't understand why reviews of DoS are more positive than the infinitely better AUJ. It reminds me of how reviews at the time praised TTT as being superior to FotR (seriously?).

Anyway I have recently watched (and loved) Kerr's Red Book of Westmarch edit, although some events were too abrupt (why are Uruk-Hai suddenly surrounding Peregrin, Meriadoc, and Boromir?) - but on the whole I felt like I was actually watching the books, and it was great (in addition to being a testament to Kerr's incredible skill and dedication, it is a testament to PJ's talent to have been able to do that - if only PJ would quit bloating useless stuff). On thing I loved is how the Nazgul do not talk, except in RotK. This makes them incredibly more scary.

Similarly I am currently watching the Sharkey's Purist Edit 2.1, and this too is excellent, with many of the cuts identical to Kerr's version (sorry I am not sure which came earlier and thus which should take credit). It feels like PJ's LotR, improved for less ridiculousness and bloating, while keeping the same timing/narrative structure.

The direction that is being described for a new version of the Sharkey's edits is exactly what I would love to see as well... But is it simply that rather than doing the work multiple times, you are waiting for both DoS and TaBA EE to be released? It does seem that they may have some interesting footage to be used in a final general Hobbit-LotR quadrilogy (or more).

Now I am no longer looking forward to the last Hobbit movie, but I have to say that a version by Kerr and you integrating footage from all 6 movies to create a streamlined Hobbit-LotR quadrilogy is very exciting. Of course, some continuity issues will occur (cartoonish orcs in The Hobbit vs the more real-looking Orcs and Uruk-Hai of LotR) but then the same issues are in the books themselves.

Anyway, just to show that there is still interest in this!

Cheers

Thanks, cuivienor, for the kind post. To set the record straight, the first version of Sharkey's Purist Editions came before Kerr's book cuts, but they weren't very good. I was about a third of the way into doing my own 6-part book cuts when Kerr released his first one. I knew right away that I needed to stop, because Kerr's were fantastic. His book cuts compelled me to go back and do a much better version of the Purist Editions to utilize some of his ideas. I don't really care about recognition; I just want to have the best edit possible.

Kerr's doing the editing this time around, and I'm serving as a contributor/consultant. The idea at this point, and it could change, is to do both a 4-part cinematic quadrilogy (though it could end up being 5 parts), and a 7-part 'book cut' version.

I firmly believe in Kerr's ability to put this together, and I think I'm more effective in a backseat role. Given that my only fan edits to date are Star Wars and LOTR, I feel more like a curator than an editor.

And don't get me started on DoS. That was 'Phantom Menace'-level disappointment. It's a garbage film that shouldn't exist, the stale outside pieces of the end of the first film and start of the second.

The Hobbit was originally going to be made into two films: An Unexpected Journey, and There And Back Again. But once principal photography wrapped, it was announced that it would be a trilogy instead. In my opinion, this sets up the middle film for failure. Even going into the movie with all this in mind, I was very surprised as how little I enjoyed it. The movie just drops every plot thread it was in the middle of. Gandalf is loitering around in Dol Guldur doing video game shit, the Master of Laketown was introduced and then did nothing else, and the "cliffhanger" cut to black had me leaving my seat in the theater without caring to hear even a little of the credits song.

Thanks a lot for the quick answer!  Now I am just looking forward to all three EEs being released, so we can finally get you and Kerr's versions of the movies :) there is definitely some very good material in AUJ, and some good material will be in DoS EE - I'd particularly love to get some true Beorn (who is completely useless in the movie) and a feel that Bilbo takes longer than a couple of hours to save the dwarves from the dungeons (as in a book, taking many many days), maybe using shots of Bilbo wondering around, cut through with forest shots that seem to redden? Or anything that really makes it more than Bilbo suddenly being a super hero.

Truly, I think the Hobbit will deserve two editions with LotR:

- A "The Hobbit" edition, with as little unrelated to Bilbo as possible

- A "LotR prequel" edition, that does include the better scenes of the broader Middle earth situation (call me crazy, but I actually enjoyed the "White Council" scenes in AUJ - Azog, on the other hand...)

Thanks again, very excited about all that!

Good to know I'm not the only one comparing The Hobbit movies to the SW PT.  Peter Jackson has really gone crazy with some of his stuff.  I didn't mind the lengths, it's the fact the films are filled with bloated over-long action scenes.  I don't mind long scenes with dialogue (they remind me of a play), but three films could have given room to so much more character development.  The DOS EE better be 40 minutes extra of nothing but character development.

And don't even get me started on the CGI-fest...one thought ROTS was bad.

And non-digital orcs (or no orcs at all for that matter, or at least orcs that do not have a GPS tracer on Thorin & Co), less elf-surfing, less CGI, less barrel-flying, fewer subplots (watch out! they're gonna push the dwarves from the fish barrels into the water *gasp*), less Dragon Ball type magical fights (such a disappointment, given how Middle-Earth "magic" had been so well-handled in LotR), less traveling for nothing (yeah sure, Gandalf will first meet Radagast in Rhudaur to the "tombs" of the nine - that scene was fully unnecessary - and then go back over the mountains to Dol Guldur), less Radagast (I'm sorry Radagast, but why are you even on screen in this one?), less "Show yourself" in Dol Guldur (dude, you suspect this is *Sauron*, not some blockheaded Bracegirdle from Hardbottle, it might be wise to do like your book counterpart and *sneak in*. A bit disappointing for Olorin to be so unwise), less dwarves immediately abandoning once the last light of Durin's day is gone (sure let's travel all this way and then when so close to the goal, immediately abandon), less gold-melting and shaping, less Athelas, less Legolas fighting around, less cross-race romances (I mean what is it with this stupid practice of desperately wanting to add feminine presence in movies at all costs? Is it not insulting to everybody from both sexes that such things are deemed necessary?), less telepathy (YES, I know, in the book at the end of RotK, a scene with the Elves is described as them communicating without words - but telepathy across huge distances has been a bad idea from the start in LotR, and has been thankfully cut from the edits), no Matrix-like "I don't stop bullets in their tracks with my staff, but I do stop Orcs with my staff - woohoo! Weird how in a few decades I will have completely forgotten how to do that, it sure would have made those fights in Moria easier", fewer silly jokes (sure, make them go in toilets, the film is already ludicrous enough by now, just rub it in our faces), less Thranduil defacing (this is not the latest James Bond).

And what is missing: character development, Bilbo (where exactly is the Hobbit?), a proper Beorn, more Mirkwood desperation (why have them get lost in such an idiotic way when you can easily do like the book: make them take time and slowly become so desperate and famished they stray from the path?), more time in the woodelves dungeons (Bilbo needs to formulate a plan, not come up with one in 5 minutes like a McGyver or Micheal Scoffield character), more quiet talk between Bilbo and Smaug.

What I thought did actually work: explaining how spiders talk by tying it back to the ring is I think quite a good idea, and works well IMO. The spider scene is not bad, but I could have done without the elves - although at that time I think that filmically it works. The Bilbo-Smaug dialogue is good, while not at the same level as the Gollum scenes of AUJ. I liked the ambiance and atmosphere of Laketown, as well as the accompanying music. Freeman's portrayal of Bilbo is still spot-on. This short moment when Bilbo realizes the flaw in his escape plan from the woodelves dungeons. The joy when Bilbo climbs up the trees in Mirkwood.

Now indeed, the EE better have the good stuff that was removed in favor of slapstick and stupid action scenes, or else fan editors will have a really tough task salvaging anything (maybe cutting Beorn entirely? he is entirely unnecessary in the movie).

Sigh...

Let's also hope that the last movie will be considerably better...

Luckily Peter Jackson has already confirmed that much more Beorn will be in the EE.  He's more important to the story in the book, but the theatrical movie just made him some random dude no one gives a s**t about.

Okay I just realized something big.  Since they have the EE's available in 3D, doing VFX work with the 3D material would be a lot easier.  If I have to rotoscope something, or someone I can do almost automatically since 3D will have all the depth information already.  I can also make the CGI more minature-like in appearance like what I'm doing in my Star Wars PT.

Even simply adding something into the scene would be easier.

Hello Hal 9000 I write only to say that I love to watch the Purist edition of the Ring Community and The Two Towers, I left to see the last one The Return of the King. Thank you for the enthusiastic work re-editing Peter Jackson material.

Now I am trying to download the The Return of the King by torrent, but it is seems than no one that have it through torrents programs are conected in this days. Could you say me another way to download the Sharkeys' version of the Return of the King? or give me the email adress of someone that have it and can send me a copy or something simmilar?
