Yeah. Pretty cool DVDs. There are some known issues though.

- Color timing is off in some sequences of films. Bond's reintroduction sequence in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" typically hasn't been as blue/purple as it appears in the Ultimate Editions (see here). The first 45 seconds or so of the title sequence of "Live and Let Die" is way too bright and orange (see here). There are other color timing differences between the new and old editions, but these two are the most jarring.

- "A View to a Kill" and "Goldeneye" have been cropped (see here and here).

Anyway, all the films look stunning, especially the Connery ones. The color timing issues on OHMSS and LALD don't really bother me, but some purists are pretty annoyed by it. They're even more upset with the cropping on AVTAK and Goldeneye, but nothing important seems to be missing in each shot. Still, it's not really about more or less image. It's a matter of the correct one.

I bought the new box-set and got plesantly surprised! I really dig these movies and the collor issues don't bother me at all. I am not as fanatic about Bond as I am about Star Wars but I liked these films since I was a child. In my opinion this is the best way Bond has ever been experienced.

I think it'd be interesting if someone made preservations fixing the color differences on the few titles that only have minor alterations. Take the old anamorphic DVD footage and remove the specs and it's done. "Goldeneye" and "A View to a Kill's" cropping can't be fixed and I think "Goldeneye's" new colder color scheme is more fitting for the film.

Also, has anyone seen the fan edit "Never Say McClory Again" which takes "Never Say Never Again" but adds the gun barrel, a title sequence (the textless version of "Thunderball" from the Ultimate Edition DVD) and rescores the film using tracks from the first 20 EON films.

Here's the link to the site, which contains short clips showing what's been done.

they made sigificant color changes without so much as a by your leave from the original cinematographers, that being said i still find it to be a spectacular release with more bond bonuses than have ever been assembled on tv discs a piece.

The major problems I have are the unnatural look of the digital processing over the original color timing and film shot by Terrence Young and his crew on From Russia with Love, dr. no, and thunderball.

Since terrence is dead the only director approved editions are the criterion CAV releases later pulled by Eon because of the commentary and since resurrected by the awesome work of fanfiltration.

as for there being diffrences in the cropping or framing these editions are the first that are supposed to be correct since they are taken from the original camera negatives, the hardest restoration work done by Lowry was the opticals. They have a nice little restoration demonstration on disc 2 of dr. no called license to restore.

The colors and fine detail on goldeneye are absolutely gorgeous, reminds me of how good it was in the theater but the first dvd release was a very dirty print.

My biggest annoyance with this release, the auto correction they do digitally removed the film grain so they added fake digital film grain and this is really annoying drawback to the enhanced image. That and Lowry or dts digital as they are now called have a reputation for turning up the blues, and the contrast in older films to try to make them modern, worse botches ever star wars trilogy and from russia with love. I did not notice the contrast issue quite as visible on the ntsc release but the pal release of frwl was overly bright and blue during the hedge maze.

the dumbest thing as far as i'm concerned is that if Lowry did a 5k per frame scan of the original negatives in High Definition why is there no HD-DVD or Blu Ray release? i mean they can release a turd imho like Casino Royale but none of the good bonds.

In these new Bond boxsets, why do they release all the films so far out of order? I would much prefer them being released in production order as that is the way I always watch them. Is there a logical reason for the order they are in?

I believe the US boxsets have mixed up the titles in an effort to get Bond fans to buy every box. Here in Australia we had the 20-movie (40-disc) set in a box and in an attache briefcase. Both used single-width 2-disc amaray cases. Whereas, our smaller boxes were one for each of the three main actors: Sean Connery box, Roger Moore box and a Pierce Brosnan box. People who bought those boxes miss out on Lazenby and the two Dalton films.

I myself forked out the riddiculous price for the briefcase as I had never bought the original DVDs or the Special Editions. That being said... I am working on a DVD that will use the SE, UE and SE Laserdisc for one of the films. I just need to find someone with either the particular SE LD and/or the means of digitally capturing the audio (DD5.1 and DTS) from the laserdisc.

Typical cheap U.S. marketing strategies then. That is retarded. I really like the box sets, great for minimizing shelf space too, but that out of order crap has made certain I will never get them.

I'm holding off for the inevitable BR release. I'm doing that on most titles now, renting them instead, given all the obnoxious double-dipping going on in the DVD world now. The original Bond set was already fantastic. I'm positive this one looks better, but it's pretty much a downgraded HD transfer in the first place. For that reason, when I go HD, I'll likewise do so with my disc titles. No sense in letting the studio triple-dip into my wallet. So I'm picking up Casino Royale on DVD and that's it.

I just got CR today, sight unseen. Heard a lot of good things about it, so I'm watching it with the wifey tonight.

Casino Royale actually has dialog lifted from the book! *gasp*

I was amazed how close it did actually follow the book, all the other films seem so far removed from their book. I was very please to see the carpet beater chair scene. Though the scratching my balls joke is definately not from the book.

Do the Blus fix any of the problems on the UEs? I always wondered if there was just a problem in down converting the restorations. Most are fine, but some have so many gripes that I've started tracking down the old SE discs etc. and am even looking at going back to LD. (ex.TB, OHMSS, LALD, TSWLM, AVTAK, GE). And is it just me, or do the colors on nearly all the films seem extremely muted? Thunderball, YOLT, LALD, and TSWLM in particular.

Is it worth looking for the early THX mastered snapper DVDs of Dr. No, FRWL, Goldfinger, TSWLM, and Moonraker?

Live & Let Die is significantly better on blu.

Also: "... they added fake digital film grain and this is really annoying drawback to the enhanced image." That's a very bold claim Skyjedi, where did you get this information? I know that post is almost 3 years back but if you could remember I'd be rather interested in this.

The early Moonraker disc is the only case of DVD rot I've ever had. Even my PC can't read it. It also suffered a bit from cramming the whole movie on a single layer. (Pan and scan version on the other layer as opposed to a being a flipper.) I miss the menus it had though. It and TSWLM actually came out as MGM switched to regular cases though.

Dr. No, FRWL, and Goldfinger are worth getting if you want to see the open matte transfers, or see the wires that were digitally painted out on the Lear Jet models. ;)

YAY! LALD is back..with original mono!!! I just may have to get my first blu ray. (still without a player. This reminds me of the early days of DVD with having a few DVDs to look at and no player..not to mention my new LD ebay purchase...)  I didn't know much about the THX editions and was hoping that Spy had the original Dolby stereo track.

Hopefully the issues will be fixed for all the Blus.  This seems to be the case, and especially since the most problem ridden ones (ex. AVTAK, OHMSS, TSWLM, GE) still haven't been announced for BR.

The R2s of the UEs had a few issues and those were corrected for the R1 release (plus the addition of original audio for every film but TSWLM!!) Most of the problems hopefully arose from the down conversion to standard def.
