My worst nightmare - the unaltered theatrical versions no longer existing...

What if the original film material was already scrapped after the completition of the SE in 1997 and Lucasfilm simply can’t rerelease the OT because of that?!! o_O

We simply know there has to be one that played in theathers somewhere

If that *did* happen, that'd be everyone's worst nightmare. Lucas will be mobbed and scolded for scrapping the originals -- there's no way to replace them with the SE. Sure the digital upgrade and newest technology have done some good in the SE, but it's not the same not having the orignals because that's exactly what us original fans first saw when they were released in theatres. *smh*

I agree, the original reels have to be in some fort knox type vault in lucas' basement

As has been stated in other posts in the past, in order to release the 1997 SE, the original stock had to be digitized. Any filmmaker with his head on straight (yes, that includes Lucas) would have multiple copies of the digitized original stock just in case a mistake was made. You have to have something to fall back on. It's a basic concept in any sort of editing field be it web design, graphic design, film editing, photo editing, etc. You always have a back-up copy in case everything goes FUBAR. So he has to have an unaltered back-up copy somewhere.

Yes, that is why I never bought his statements about the originals not even existing anymore. I just never believed those claims.

Unfortunately the issue was never really about whether the original OT still existed in some vault somewhere, but that George Lucas, the creator himself considers that they "no longer exist," and therefore won't make them available to the public.

Our cultural history deserves to be preserved and shared with the public like all great art. George just needs to be convinced of this.
The original Star Wars trilogy: Our cultural history deserves to be preserved and should be available to the public like all great works of art!

Perhaps the original film stock itself is destroyed or just damaged beyond belief. But the digitized versions should be there.

Hey guys I have my first positive thing to say to you guys dun da da dun

The movies were put in the national film archive so they will always be preserved. Even if Lucas did destroy the film stocks there is still a useable one in the national archive. They put in there films they believe need to be preserved no matter what. Don't know how Return of the Jedi could fit this but whatever.

Heh heh heh.

And, believe it or not, I love ya for it. I'm heading to D.C. in April for a conference. Time to make a stop off at the archives and heist a copy.

Don't get him started, Simeen. Jimbo has been very vocal in his anti-original version views in the past on this forum. Leave it be and just accept that he don't give a rat's ass about them.

I don't care but I am not against the originals being released for those who like them. And yes the national archive has the prints separate from Lucusfilm so that Lucas can not destroy them. I don't hate Return of the Jedi but it is by far my least favorite Star Wars movie the archive is suppose to be for truly great films which Return of the Jedi definutly is not just good. A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back do definutly deserve there place.

Is the archive for "truly great films" or for those that have had such a significant impact on popular culture that they should be preserved as a result? I'm thinking the latter. Since all three of the original films had so many Oscar noms among them, I would consider that pretty significant.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

And yet, Jar Jar might be enough to keep TPM out of the archives.

Attack of the Clones would deserve its place but since it was a digital print theres no point since digital doesn't degrade.

Yet I don't think this archive exists so much for preservation as it is to have a repository where all the great films are, regardless of if its digital or traditional film. If they deem it belongs there due to historical significance, then they'll include it no matter what the film format.

Well, as we've all said all along, this forum is open to everybody's opinion. However, I doubt the archives are.
