My personal Star Wars: Return of the Jedi cut, a work-in-progress custom restoration.

Good day, or night, depending on where you are.

I wanted to take this opportunity to share my work-in-progress edit of Return of the Jedi. I’ve named it The Final Cut. I would like to stress that this name is liable to change and my title for this project, once the skywalker cut, then the victory cut, now final cut, has been the cause of some protest, so I don’t want to dwell too much on the name of this project and more on the technical side of things.

So what am I offering with this project that’s new and different? I don’t know, I don’t pay much attention to the projects here. I haven’t labeled this project purely as a restoration because it’s more of a SE/theatrical mix. The real kicker here is the preservation of the Victory Celebration in an otherwise theatrical film. What I’m offering is a cut of the film that is specifically made for my own enjoyment, it is only if you share my same feelings regarding the special edition changes for this film that this fan edit will appeal to you, and if it doesn’t then I apologize.

The list of changes are as follows:

  1. Removed Vader’s “Nooooooo!”, that was added in the Blu-ray release.
  2. Jedi Rocks has been vanquished, Lapti Nek has been restored.
  3. Restored the old sarlaac pit and associated audio.
  4. Removed CGI dug from Jabba’s palace.
  5. Restored some lost frames.
  6. Anakin’s ghost is portrayed by Sebastian Shaw.
  7. Victory Celebration remains.
  8. Ewoks no longer have creepy CGI eyes.

These changes were accomplished with a combination of UHD Blu-ray 4K83 footage, courtesy of TN1.
Theatrical shots have been color-matched to the Blu-ray and a universal custom color grade (D3) is applied to the film.

Final project will be available in SDR 1080p and 4K and 4K HDR.

Sounds impressive! Would be interested in taking a look at it.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Do you plan on including the prequel planet celebrations? I always preferred Victory Celebration but never wanted to see the prequel CGI at the end.

I’ve never seen anyone pull off keeping the victory celebration music while removing the planet cutaway itself. I don’t think it will ever work. It’s an all or nothing package.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Hypothetically possible to cut out all the planets but prequel planets only? Nah, you’d ether need the clean comp plates (I’ve tried rotoscoping Tatooine-coruscant and it just doesn’t work with the motion blur already present) or 4K97 footage which we don’t have yet.
