The last known edition of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 to have the original Walt Disney pictures logo are the 2005 DVD editions as far as I know, which I’ve ripped onto my computer. The changing of the logo is so egregious for Toy Story in particular, as the logo segues into Andy’s bedroom wallpaper. That really bothered me when I went to see the 3D re-release back in 2010. It’s so shoddily plastered over!

I’m glad I found this thread, I genuinely thought I was the only one bothered by this disturbing trend in re-releases.

This is partly why I’m glad when I got all 3 films on DVD off eBay the other month ago it was the 2005 DVDs of TS and TS2 that were included. I saw the 3D reissue before the release of TS3 and yeah the logo plastering I wasn’t happy with.

When restoring the original logos for my 3D version, I’m using the UK R2 DVD as my source, for maximum possible quality.

Willy Wonka’s opening logo has been plastered at least five times.

1994 VHS (1995 reprint, same logo appears on 1991 VHS). At first glance you might think this is the same logo on the ‘84 and ‘86 VHS but if you look closely the clouds are in a different position.

That’s pretty appalling - that’s no way to treat such a nice film.

Though it should probably be noted that Paramount were only the US theatrical distributors, and prints in other territories would have had different logos in any case - CIC handled a lot of Europe, for instance.

UK distribution is attributed to Paramount British Pictures (aka Paramount Film Service) - it’s hard to say if they would have had a distinct logo (the only one I can find is from 1946: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WCXEGh3Onc)

Actually the 2001 VHS has some wind and jingling sound effects at the start of the logo before the music starts but otherwise same logo.

The other day I caught Lethal Weapon 4 on TV and of course the opening logo is plastered but worse! Here’s the original which appears on the DVD releases. The logo segues via explosion to the opening credits.

On TV the other day, the film opened with the current WB logo (basically the same logo here but without the 75 years tie in and I don’t think the music was there either) which fades to black and then it straight cuts back to the old logo at the exact moment the explosion starts! It looks horrible and is unnecessary.

I don’t own the BD but considering that was how it appeared on TV and someone in the comment section of the first video mentioned seeing the plastered version on Netflix and the second vid is apparently from Roku I assume the BD has the plastered version.

Edit: someone in the comment section of the second video mentioned that the BD has the original logo so that’s good.

I could definitely support something like this. Warner Bros., Paramount, and Disney are three studios that immediately pop to mind that frequently replace the original studio logo at the start of their films on rereleases, both theatrical and on home video. I never really understood why. As the one user above noted, losing the original Pixar version of the Disney castle at the start of Toy Story is definitely a loss. I miss the old Paramount logo and theme at the start of Grease and would definitely like to see Willy Wonka with the Paramount logo. There’s definitely other examples but those definitely spring to mind.

Couldn’t agree more! One problem I have with the 007 blu-rays… Weird seeing Connery films with the mgm.com thing. Even the Brosnan films had changes… removal of the the UA logos… The World Is Not Enough had the MGM 75th anniversary logo changed as well.

This is why I always get films (plastered with the MGM logo on current releases) on VHS. There is also the horrible international plastering (I found a Swedish print of an MGM film and there was no MGM logo. There was the Svensk Filmindustri logo instead)

I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who is irritated to see what they do with the logos: deleted, plastered or replaced by modern logos. I thought nobody cared. In theaters, the curtains on the screens opened and closed when the logos appeared. That’s why it’s strange to see a movie starting… suddenly! For example, all Italian cinema released on blu-ray (e.g. giallo, spaghetti western) has the logo removed, except for 3 or 4 films. Films by directors like Argento, Bava, Fulci, it’s a shame.
