Aww, thanks DE! I mostly trash my own stuff to maintain an air of ironic detachment so it’s easier to pretend not to care in the event someone says it sucks. That actually sounds even more sad now that I type it out.

Although, one of my tracks is just a piece from the film Stalker played in reverse, so that one really is pretty lazy.

So I’ve been wanting to get into jazz and blues for sometime now, but I really don’t know who to listen to. All I know is that I like jazz that is (mostly) instrumental with lots of piano & sax, and I like blues with lots of electric guitar.

Anyone have suggestions for artists I should check out?

Well for blues you should start with stevie ray vaughan. He’s very accessible while still being authentic but having just enough sense of pop to be easy to listen to. And he was one of the best guitarists to ever walk the face of the earth, and by all accounts super nice in person too. He’s got slow, painful blues as well as fast shuffles. Also has a little Rock influence. Pro tip: once you’re tired of his far too brief studio catalog look for life performances. Look for performances released posthumously. (There was only one actual live album put out while he was alive. Called Live Alive. It’s got a few good moments and starts on a high note but it’s a real mixed bag. It’s a compilation of several concerts but only one of them was recorded well. The common buzz was that the album sucked due to how messed up he was on drugs he was during the performance but further research points to it being more because they were recorded so poorly that most of the parts had to be overdubbed due to poor sound quality and with as spontaneous and fresh as his live performances always were, with large improvisational sections, trying to overdub specific live performances was a doomed process bound to sound lifeless. But all the performances from his 1985 appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival are great, but you don’t need the album for that as that performance was later released on its own at a later date. And there have been many posthumous live albums released from him and they are all fabulous, he was so good live the fact that he never made an actual good live album in his lifetime is a strange anomaly. But I REALLY recommend the live video “Live at the El Mocambo”. But something after he got a keyboard player would also be worth exploring as that provided a whole new layer that is worth hearing. But YouTube videos might be enough for you. If you want more specific performances I’d be happy to get you some.)

I also recommend Buddy Guy, Albert King, and Robert Cray as excellent blues artists.

If you want specific songs let me know.

Can’t help you with jazz.

Jazz has almost 100 years of incredible recordings of every imaginable flavor. You can spend a lifetime of exploring - it’s like a giant project with all these artists trying different things.

My favorites tend towards the edgy post-bop stuff. John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, etc. But I also love big bands - Duke Ellington, Count Basie, etc. And really early stuff - Louis Armstrong, George Lewis, even the old King Oliver recordings. Cool stuff - Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Chet Baker, Bill Evans. Love some of the avant garde - Art Ensemble of Chicago, George Adams and Don Pullen, Pharoah Sanders. And fusion - Weather Report, Return to Forever. Bebop and swing - Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Clifford Brown/Max Roach, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz. Gypsy jazz - Django/Stef. Man, I’m leaving a lot out.

I’m never sure where to begin as far recommending where to start. Hard to predict what would resonate for you. You mentioned piano - if you want to be amazed, you should try Art Tatum. Or for something more ethereal, Bill Evans “Portrait in Jazz”. A lot of people suggest Miles Davis “Kind of Blue”, which is hard to argue against. For saxophone, hmmm - are you ready for John Coltrane “Giant Steps”? Any of the Stan Getz bossa nova stuff is probably a gentler introduction. A lot of people started with Charlie Parker with Strings. One interesting recording is Benny Carter’s “Further Definitions”, which has four fantastic sax players (Carter, Phil Woods, Coleman Hawkins, and Charlie Rouse) on some marvelous arrangements and a fantastic rhythm section. Or you might like Dave Brubeck “Time Out”, with some nice Paul Desmond sax along with Brubeck’s own piano style, and of course the odd time signatures.

So around six months back I became a massive overnight of a band called The Orion Experience after stumbling upon their song Cult of Dionysus. My favorite song of theirs is New York City Girl.
