Multiple Subtitle Streams

Using DVDLabPro is there a way to display two different subtitle streams simultaneously? I have one stream set for signs/text and another for dialogue. I'd like to be able to display both at the same time, as is done on some anime dvd's. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks.

I don't think so. I use DVDLab Pro also. Just make multiple versions if you need to, This is what I am doing for my SFII project, four subtitle files:

1. "Location" subtitles- to emulate the US version's "London" or "Patterson Air Force Base" etc in a black box covering up the Japanese lettering.

2. English "dubtitles" which will also include the above.

3. Japanese audio translation subs v1, locations (this time not covering the Japanese text, but below it) and songs mixed in with the voices.

4. same as above except slight differences: Lord Vega becomes Master Bison, Balrog becomes Vega, and Bison becomes Balrog, plus a few other slight differences.

I also did this to A New Hope. Subtitle track one was the Greedo subtitles, which couldn't be turned off. Unfortuntaly they could be turned off if you selected a different subtitle track. I spent forever trying to figure out how to make these be displayed at the same time as the "full" subtitles, even looking at some anime discs for inspiration. Eventually I just ended up putting the Greedo subs in the main file, as well as on their own.

So, you're doing a fansub of Street Fighter II: the Animated Movie? Or is it Street Fighter II V?

The Animated Movie. However, I didn't create the subtitles. Karyuudo Fansubs did. Here's what I am doing and my progress so far. I am fixing up a few mistakes I found in the subtitles, as well as making "dubtitles". I have already extended the English dub audio and synced it with the Japanese video also, just adding some finishing touches now.

How do you make a fansubbed DVD anyway? I ask because there's some shows I would like to fansub, but I don't really know where to begin.

Well, I didn't make this one myself, but you might want to check out videohelp.com. Search for guides about subtitles. You have to rip the dvd to your hard drive, of course. You might want to search for subtitles online for what you are wanting to sub to see if someone else made some already. If you can't find any and you have to make them yourself, this is what I did for the Roger Rabbit short, Roller Coaster Rabbit. I ripped the audio from the DVD into an ac3 file. Then I converted it to a wav file and imported it into CoolEdit. Actually before I did this I wrote down all of the lines from the cartoon. This was easy because it was only 7 minutes long. Using cool edit, I made a note of the time when each line started and ended. It doesn't have to be exact. I used cool edit because it was the only program I had that could give me the presise times I needed. When using something like Power DVD to get the times, it didn't match up for some reason. Then I made the subtitle file using subtitle creator. Now I assume you want to subtitle something that in Japanese into English and you probably don't know Japanese. You'll have to figure that part out yourself. I have a friend that knows Japanese that is going to help me subtitle the bonus features from the Japanese SFII movie DVD.

I'm learning Japanese, so hopefully that won't be a problem. As for the shows I want to fansub, I've checked, they're all shows that have no current fansub projects. Actually, they're all anime from the 1960s, which it seems no one but me is interested in subbing (probably because it's not flashy enough...) so I'm pretty sure I'm safe.

Well, I'd probably start out by looking at some of those guides on videohelp, then translating and writing/ typing out the dialouge.
