Most telling SE moment — Page 5

I think the most telling SE moment is not an SE moment at all, in that it was in the original but it foreshadowed what would eventually come along some 14 (?) years later.

In ROTJ, there’s that exterior shot of Jabba’s palace, where a frog-thing eats an insect-thing…and then burps.

For years I thought that was an SE addition, until I watched Harmy’s Despecialized Edition and found out it was in the original.

Funny I thought the same thing too. I always thought the same thing too. It always had an almost digital look to it. Perhaps its because its far away.

This is the one I bring up whenever someone tries to make the “George’s vision” argument. His true original vision was . . . a couple of extra rocks? More than anything else (besides maybe the door to Jabba’s Palace), I think this is the best illustration of how George was just changing stuff for the sake of changing it towards the end.

I’m still pretty sure any '11 additions were for the 3D release. Foreground rocks, deeper Jabba door matte, more poke-out-of-the-screen bits when R2 gets shot.

That’s actually a pretty good point. Hadn’t thought of it before. But it’s the only explanation I’ve heard of that makes sense for the rocks and door. Maybe even the Ewok blinking. Anything they had the actual 3D model files on hand for (presumably not the 97 fx as they rendered 2004 Jabba on top of 1997 Jabba’s model) could be rendered in stereo. The dug coming down the stairs fits as well, and the extra reflection and sparks added to ESB, though modest changes, could have been done with 3D viewing in mind.

Changing the ANH pod door to black was probably done because it was accidentally made neon blue in their weird attempt to make R2’s blue color ‘pop’ in many shots in that film.

I just think it’s hilarious that in the very next scene of the '11 version, the digital rocks magically disappear.

Yeah. If George was still in charge, maybe he’d add some tumbling rock sound effects during one of Ben’s shots in the 2017 edition.

I wouldn’t be surprised.
Some of the changes have been very ironic, at least when taking into consideration his “artistic vision” statement.
So it was your vision to have a really bad sped-up Emperor scream dubbed over Luke, but then also your vision to take it out the next time you released the movies?
Right…

I read somewhere whoever was mixing the 2004 cut just sort of told Lucas he was taking it out, and George just sort of shrugged it off. I don’t have a source for this, however.

Obviously those two uses of ‘real’ are different. In the most recent instance I used “real” to refer to practical effects, in the latter I meant the literal translation.

Twisting my words also doesn’t help you.

I actually like there are more stormtroopers in the hangar.

Not the change itself, it looks like complete garbage. But the idea is funny. And makes more sense than the original.

Um, there was no hangar in 1977, it was dead end.

No personal attacks.
No excessive profanity

Yes, clearly I was the only one engaging in this.
I’m not getting into it again, but I apologize for breaking the guidelines in that instance, though other members getting away with it on a constant basis just because they’re well-known on the forums does not seem fair to me in the slightest.

Once again I’m sorry and it won’t happen again, but it being acceptable for a select few individuals to behave a certain way but nobody else doesn’t seem right.

So because someone takes personal offence to something, that excuses them of breaking multiple rules?
And if someone says something that offends me, even if they had no idea it would, I can start swearing my head off and calling them names?
Somehow I don’t think so.

I know what I did was wrong, but the double standards are shocking.

Oh , come off it. you must be either stupid or a pre-teen if you thought that calling people “retarded” wasn’t offensive. Grow a pair and just admit you brought all this on yourself with stupid comment like that.

No, in all seriousness all you do is sit on these forums trying to make people feel like shit.
If that’s how you get satisfaction out of life I just feel sorry for you.

My daughter has Asperger’s. She’s had to deal with all sorts of shit so far, and she’s only eight. She has a difficult life ahead of her. Not as difficult as others who are not high-functioning autistic, but difficult nonetheless.

Words have power. When you use “retard” to insult someone, you are insulting more than just the person you are talking to.

Go fuck off. I have nothing more to say to you.

Words only have power if you give them power, that’s your problem not mine.
Don’t try and use fallacies against me to make me feel bad, it doesn’t make you not an asshole.

If you want to go down that road I have multiple family members who are handicapped, stop being a prat and treating others like shit to make yourself feel better.

You have multiple family members that are handicapped and you still think it’s ok to call people that? That makes it even worse. It doesn’t matter how many meanings a word has, it is the way that you use it that is the problem here. Especially in an open forum, where you don’t personally know the people you are interacting with, who may just have learning difficulties or a handicap themselves.

No, that doesn’t make it worse.
Words are offensive if you allow them to be offensive and get upset over them; that’s your individual issue, not other’s. Expecting the world to tip toe around everyone just in case they offend someone is ludicrous.

Regardless I already owned up to it and apologised. Berating me isn’t doing anything, I literally just agreed that I was out of line.
I was saying that it’s in the rules to not A) direct personal attacks and B) not to overuse cursing, both of which are done on an extremely regular basis by some individuals but it goes ignored because “it’s expected.”
I’d say calling everyone who doesn’t agree with an opinion you have a “dumbass” or “stupid” at every turn is substantially worse than an offhanded curse word that happened to unintentionally offend someone specific because of a personal issue.

I know what I did was wrong, but it’s a pretty darn big case of the pot calling the kettle black.
I’ve seen users banned for saying lesser things than telling people to “F off” because they got offended, is them being offended not as important because they’re not in the “elite club.”?

I’m not continuing this discussion because the thread is once again getting derailed right after going back on track, if you have an issue with me either take it up with me in off topic or pm me, otherwise I’m done here.

You’re telling me! I used to go to a forum that had that exact mindset! I hated it! And now it’s happening here. Take a look around - what have you become!? I thought I could trust every one of you here. Looking at what’s happened, it’s obvious I’ve made the wrong choice. NOW ALL OF YOU, SCREW!

Personally I don’t find it offensive when random people around here call me something like that. Something as petty as that could never have any chance at offending someone intelligent like me. But I understand, not everyone is like me.

I don’t feel that way, either, but that was never the point. Retared as a slur is not very offensive because it would be particularly insulting to the recipient to be called mentally handicapped, it’s easy to shrug that off, it is offensive because it devalues mentally handicapped people. But I don’t expect you to understand this.

Does it, though?
My best friend of about 10 years has asperges as well as a couple of other issues and regularly tells other people not to worry about offending him and pokes fun at himself too.
Obviously this isn’t the case for everyone in his position but he personally feels that having people tred on egg shells around him only makes him feel more “abnormal” (I don’t really want to use that word in regards to his mental illness, but it’s the way he phrased it).
Things like that can be and are a coping mechanism for some people. It might not make sense to you, but that’s just how it is sometimes.

My point is different people are going to find different things offensive.
One of the reasons I initially used the word freely is because everyone I’ve encountered in my personal life has not minded, or openly encouraged it, so I don’t think twice.

If I was aware of Frink’s issue I definitely would not have used it because I don’t want to intentionally push people’s hot buttons, no matter how much I may not like them. But nobody can be expected to just know what they “can and can’t say” around someone, that’s too much.

I know I said I wouldn’t add anything more to the discussion but I felt that was relevant; the world isn’t black and white.

Now I’m actually not going to keep adding because this has gone on way too long 😛
