Most of 4 Billion going to charity

Author

I thought this was worth its own thread. It's an amazing thing that most people would not do. I would probably waste (?) most of it on whores, so seriously, here's to George Lucas.

^erm becasue he wants the money so he can channel it to the right causes.

disney only cares about its share value by comparison, and closes down schools and care homes for copyright infringement.

you can bash lucas as a creative and director, but on a human level the guy is a saint.

Yeah, it's very noble of him. IMO it doesn't legitimize his actions in the film preservation area, but he has always been incredibly generous with his fortunes, going all the way back to day one. So here's to George Lucas for this fine act!

really? who would teach that? is his charitable philanthropy going to threaten you somehow?

i agree totally about the OUT though, he would lose nothing by releasing it.

I don't have to justify my opinion.

Of the $4.05 billion: If Lucas gave $4 billion to education/charity, and $0.05 billion to the OUT, I'd give him the "Nobel Prize for Awesomeness".

Listen, I'm certainly bitter about Lucas' treatment of the OOT (and THX 1138, which is also never coming out again), but the fact of the matter is, that's fiction. Giving that much money to charity is a very real thing, and he deserves full congratulations for giving to a good cause and those in need. I give him full credit for, and my hat is off.

He would've been able to donate even more if he had also restored and made the original films available throughout the decade and a half they've been suppressed. ;)

He hasn't given the money away just yet.

I'm all for charity but for this to happen the mouse house gets its hands on Star Wars.  The best thing Lucas ever did was keep the rights to the movies and storylines because Roddenberry had to basically give away everything to get star trek made.

I don't know what other people make of it but no true auteur filmaker would sell out to frickin Disney.  This just proves that Lucas was always a businessman before a filmaker.

The prequels were made for money and nothing else.  The same will apply to these new movies. Except now Lucas won't have to be the one in charge of everything.

It's understandable.

Over here my generation spent most of their lives thinking Sir Jimmy Saville (knighted by the Queen and Pope) was a lovable oddball eccentric and tireless philanthropist.

Now we know him to be a predatory kiddie fiddler.

Setting up people for sainthood can lead to one hell of a come down.

But personally I can't live suspecting the worst in people, it's not healthy.

In the round I'm happy he is giving it to causes he cares about but I balance that in my mind with his ability to give that much.

David Prowse gives less but he has less to give.

It's a good thing for George to do but it doesn't give him a halo.

I do hope he is okay, giving stuff away is often a sign of bad news.

Lucas pulled a Steve Jobs or a Stan Lee.  Though neither of those two as far as i'm aware was willing to give away their landfall of wealth gained for selling pixar/,marvel.

This is still kind of weird though its like bargaining with Satan to give you worldly riches with the end goal of giving it all to the church, lol.

George is a good man when it comes to charitable giving, but now Disney gets to ruin star wars.

In this link, it says George Lucas originally referred to Star Wars as a "space western."

This completely explains the scene with Han shooting Greedo under the table.  It's straight out of a "Gunsmoke" episode.

I wish that I could just wish my feelings away...but I can't.  Wishful wishing can only lead to wishes wished for in futile wishfulness, which is not what I wish to wish for.

You're seriously drawing comparisons between George and a member of the Nazi party? No. Just no. If this is going to turn into a silly political discussion, I'm booting this thread into off topic.

I always saw Episode 1 as sort of a crappy Disney like movie, and now Jar Jar Binks is a Disney character.

I would like to introduce all of you to the guy who has my vote in the 2016 Presidential election.

Yes but it's like you giving away a lot of money but still being more rich than you need to be.

He collected together a lot of money, nicer people have less.

Nicer people will be recipients of George's charities.

I would rather rich people gave money to good causes than blowing it on mansion houses and the like but at the end of the day only billionaires can give away billions.

When I heard he was giving the money to charity I was impressed.  Maybe creatively some of us disagree with his decisions over the past 20 years or so, but you can't deny giving away 4 billion dollars makes him a pretty cool dude in my books.

War does not make one great.
