Hello! I've already said Virtual Boy!

Not Nanner's Virtual Boy! Gaffer's Virtual Boy! Hmph...

There is no lingerie in space…

C3PX said: Gaffer is like that hot girl in high school that you think you have a chance with even though she is way out of your league because she is sweet and not a stuck up bitch who pretends you don’t exist… then one day you spot her making out with some skinny twerp, only on second glance you realize it is the goth girl who always sits in the back of class; at that moment it dawns on you why she is never seen hanging off the arm of any of the jocks… and you realize, damn, she really is unobtainable after all. Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Would a poser say that the N64 Castlevania games sucked ass? Cuz if so, then I guess I am a poser.

Well, I've never played it, but it got pretty mediocre reviews back in the era.

And any PS1 or N64 game that got a medicore score back in that era sucks beyond belief by todays standards.

...GAAAAAHHHH!! My eyes are bleeding!! BLASPHEMY!! DOUBLE BLASPHEMY!!

The Atari was a CLASSIC console! Although I prefered the Intellevision.

The 3DO was an AWESOME console, and a great idea too: make an open format and allow other manufacturers to have one... The Panasonic was the best one! It had a great graphic engine for that time, a great video compression, and great games, why, it had a high-res version of Night Trap! The award winning "Twister"! The first versions of FIFA Soccer and Need for Speed were released for the 3DO! It had the best version of "The Incredible Machine"! It had good versions of Street Fighter Turbo! It had a brilliant way to allow 8 controllers into one console (the second controller was connected on the first one, and so on, up to 8).

I still remember when I first played the Neo Geo, in a sunny saturday afteroon in 1992, with a friend of mine, at a video store that allowed you to play consoles for a few bucks an hour. We had those huuge controllers on our small, 10 year old kids laps, and played Art of Fighting... I was in awe, playing that cool 32 bit console for the first time...

Emphasis added. The Dreamcast did very well in Japan (it even had a re-release last year I think), but U.S. sales weren't enough to keep Sega of America in the hardware business. They lost hundreds of millions of dollars. The Dreamcast's failure in the U.S. is the primary reason Sega is now a third-party developer for other consoles.

I don't remember Dreamcast games being any more expensive than anything else out at the time. They just couldn't keep up with Sony. The PlayStation was a huge success and even a superior piece of hardware like the Dreamcast was no match for it. Once the PlayStation2 was announced, the Dreamcast market shriveled up and died.

When the console was discontinued, I picked up a spare at Toys R Us for $50 and about 30 or so games for $5 to $10 a pop. Most of them are still in the shrink wrap on the shelf. Not enough time in the day.

another part to the Dreamcast death was that you could play backups (on cd!) without the use of some kind modification. Jay let me know if pointing this out is note ok and I will edit this thread.

I also dont recall the games being anymore $$$ or easier to scratch. I loved playing that stupid sea monkey game!! And man Jet Grind Radio, that was crazy if you had alittle..hum...beer...yeah beer in you.

Dreamcast backups are hardly a threat to Sega any longer. No harm in discussing them.

I don't have any bootlegs, but I do use a DC-X boot disc to play imports myself.

so in my opinion the turbo grafx system including xpress and turbo duo were the most underrated!

I always thought 3DO had some AWESOME games in the arcade. I never knew they made a console, but I'm sure it was good, based on what I knew of them.

I love those retro games they were for there time so advanced, even though the games of today are so so more advanced technically i actually find some of these "older" games more fun to play.

The Megadrive had Road Rash 1-3 on it. I borrowed the third one off a mate for a few months, it was pretty fun, but I've only played the other two on emulators. I thought every Road Rash game beyond the Megadrive sucked big time...

I have to agree, although I'd go further to say that post-Megadrive, Sega was the most underrated console company in the biz. Sony were businessmen, and I still respect Nintendo as games-makers, but Sega never got consumer support for innovative games. I own a Megadrive, Saturn and a Dreamcast - and I thought that the last two were SUPREMELY overrated. The Saturn had some of the best games I've ever played EVER, and I could get them all for $20 Australian no probs. The Dreamcast had an awesome line-up of games - I honestly believe it failed because of a general bias towards the 'Playstation' brand name. In fact, I think the Saturn could have beaten the PSX if it had only been advertised. The general consensus over here was that it was just 'crap'. End of story. Whenever I asked someone to tell me why, they could never tell me, because they never played it - they just said something about it not being on TV or not being as popular...

The thing is, it sold 3 million within the first few weeks, and broke sales records. It was when the PS2 came out, and all the third parties jumped onto the bandwagon and abandoned the machine. I know in Australia, it did really poor, because the games that were coming out in America were not coming out here, and it had ONE advertisement on TV upon launch and none after that.

I agree that the Dreamcast is highly underrated, as was the Sega Saturn (with a WAAY better hardware than PlayStation 1). Shenmue for the Dreamcast is one of the most underrated games of all time.

and what's more, Yu Suzuki spent about $500, 000 making the game. Something tells me that was a creative decision only...definitely not the move of a businessman.

The story of Sega's life, methinks...

Question: What is with the sudden arise of a bunch of video game related threads outside the main one? Some of these topics we've been discussing here would really help get the VGT back on topic.

Because a Yellow Submarine game with an LSD mode isn't exactly the stuff of legendary gaming.

Haven't checked that thread out, but if it's gone off topic, that's one reason why new threads get created.

Also, there are so many different things to discuss about video games that following several different topics within one large thread can be difficult. People are less likely to click on a 10-page thread entitled "Video Game Thread" than they are a smaller thread called "What NES game haven't you beaten?" or "Most Underrated Console System". Granular topics break things down into palatable bites and help flesh out more focused ideas.

The Saturn was built to be a 2D gaming powerhouse. Sega failed to recognize the emergence of 3D gaming, which is what Sony focused on when developing the PlayStation. This is especially odd considering Sega introduced such revolutionary 3D arcade titles as Virtua Fighter. The 3D capability of the Saturn as it was initially designed was pretty bad, and when they found out what Sony was up to, they hurriedly incorporated a couple off-the-shelf Hitachi chips to bolster the Saturn's 3D performance. It also had the unfortunate effect of pushing the launch price to $399--and the PlayStation's 3D capability was still superior.

I have a Saturn, and I don't think I've seen a console before or since that so perfectly emulated 2D arcade games, particularly fighters. But its 3D performance isn't so hot.

A Dreamcast and a copy of Crazy Taxi got me through almost three months of convalescence after a bad car accident. That and a lot of Sci-Fi Channel back when it was worth watching.

I never actually played the saturn. I was one of those that fell into the 'its bad cause thats what i hear group' though thats not really the reason i never played it, only part of it. I had most other systems, and the games available for the saturn, for the most part, werent the type i played at the time. I (my little bro) do have a dreamcast and that has some good games to it, i have nothing agains sega though nintendo will always be number 1 for me. I also have the virtual boy. I liked the system, we rented it from blockbuster once, i wanted it then so a couple years ago got one from ebay...need to get some more games. besides mario tennis and wario world, the boxing game was great.

Another underrated system was the Atari Jaguar. It was also ahead of its time as far as capabilities go. Unfortunately, the only good game for it was Alien Vs. Predator, but that game was great! I never had one, but I used to play it at a friends house frequently.

Jay: I totally agree. Saturn rocked on certain things, especially Virtua Fighter, which I thought was way ahead of it's time, but suffered from poor market research (little to no 3d) and bad word-of-mouth.
