Most Disappointing / Satisfying Aspect of the Sequel Trilogy?

I thought it would be interesting to discuss what we all feel is the most disappointing element in the sequel trilogy so far, as well as what we consider the most satisfactory thing that the ST has done.

The most satisfying element for me in the Sequel trilogy so far is Kylo Ren. He is hands down the most original and inspired thing that the ST has produced. The character is complex, unexpected (I thought we would get Vader 2.0), and so interesting. Not to mention the exceptional acting and gravitas given by Adam Driver. Nothing comes close to this character in the sequel trilogy for myself.

The most disappointing element of the ST for me is easily that we never got to see the big three reunite all together. The Luke and Leia scene at the end of TLJ helped a lot with this gaping hole in my heart however haha. Seeing all three together is something that was not necessary, but is just something I wanted to see in the movies and kinda feel bummed about not getting.

I’m curious to hear from you all what are the most disappointing and satisfying elements of the films.

I’m sure this thread will go well. 😉

Also FYI you’ve misspelled “disappointing.”

Most Satisfying : the ST doesn’t make the same mistakes Lucas made on the PT
Most Disappointing : the ST does create new mistakes that even Lucas avoided on the PT

I agree Kylo Ren is quite possibly the best part. He’s already in the all-time great film villains canon for me.

My biggest disappointment, I don’t even know if you can call it that really, but knowing that Carrie will never have the chance to give her character a proper send off is something that will never not make me sad.

Rey is by far the most disappointing thing in the ST to me. DSIII is a close second.

Devil’s avocado!

While the character of Rey is a bit underwritten and a bit too perfect, Daisy Ridley is so charismatic and her performance is probably my favorite aspect of the sequel trilogy.

How the character of Finn was “expanded upon” in TLJ is probably my most disappointing aspect. I think a big missed opportunity.

That’s my favorite part of the ST too.

Wait, is that what you call Snoke too or did I misunderstand you?

The villains and the Force went back to being interesting instead of embarrassing.

Meanwhile everything that crept in from the writing style of JJ-Trek is terrible, big loud emotional beats first, logic second. Especially Death Star III and R2D2’s magic map.

Not going to lie, the third instalment is very concerning to me now that Abrams and … some guy from Batman V Superman are on script duty.

Uncanny, now that you mention it!

Alternatively, the Oscar winning screenwriter of Argo.

Probably a blip

At this point it’s hard to know what’s a blip and what not (BvS being a clusterfuck from every direction to the point where you probably can’t really blame it on one screenwriter). All you can do is either look at it glass half full, or glass half empty.

Which wasn’t a good movie, so…

I’d have to agree, Kylo Ren is the best thing about the sequel trilogy.

I suppose the most disappointing thing about it is that I’m still not convinced this story needed to be told.

Does any story need to be told?

i know i’m in the vast minority here but i don’t like daisy’s performance in any of the movies at all. sure it was infinitely better than anything in the PT except for maybe some liam neeson bits here and there and some highlights from mcgregor, mcdiarmid, portman and christensen (mostly in RotS) but yeah, it’s nothing special imo.

that said, she’s extremely charismatic, which is why i still wanted to have hope that Rey would be redeemed for me in TLJ, which didn’t happen. i didn’t buy the balancing the force explanation for the ease of her progress in force abilities, and that made TLJ feel very underwhelming to me. if rey were a better character, i’m sure the ST as a whole would be a lot more interesting to me.

i forgot to mention my favorite part: poe, and luke comes as a close second (and i am far from being his characterization’s biggest fan)

what showed me that ridley wasn’t as amazing to me in TLJ is that hamill made me by a character i didn’t like, while she didn’t.

if the ST was better told i’m sure we wouldn’t be seeing comments such as handman’s quite as often. take TESB - it didn’t need to be told either, SW is a complete and self contained story. but TESB did such a fine job that no one cares if it needs to be told or not.

The PT didn’t need to be told but that’s the least of my problems with it.

And yeah you’ve kinda made my point, you and I just disagree that the ST didn’t do a fine job.

Most disappointing is the decision to go back to a ragtag rebels versus oppressive empire style of story. It would have been much more interesting for the remnants of the Empire to be the small guerilla group fighting the established New Republic.

Most satisfying would be the new characters, especially Rey, Poe, and Kylo Ren.

I suppose I’m just disappointed by the overall plot and writing that I don’t feel has fully utilized these characters to their full potential.

To be absolutely honest? For me, the most disappointing aspect of the ST is that it isn’t about Luke rebuilding the Jedi Order. But for that to have worked, it would’ve had to been shot in the late '80s-early '90s, when Hamill, Fisher, Ford, etc. were still young enough to believably portray post-war/reconstruction era versions of their characters. The 2010s were just too late to execute a proper ST.

Most satisfying aspect? Daisy Ridley. She’s cute and a capable actress; I will watch her career with great interest.
